Yajirobe:"do you know what a just senzu beam diet does to a man???...korin likes it"(it was on dragon ball z abriged and funny thing that on actual dragon ball that was a joke about yajirobe being the beam daddy in the actual show!!! Oh for some context beam daddy means that he is the one delivering senzu beams)
Silly Kyle, only the pure of heart can ride a Nimbus. Someone who dabbles in the realms of supervillainy could never hope to sit atop that little cloud.
Lucky for you, I work with people that can provide protection when Kyle sends his minions after you. A nice bunker in the middle of [REDACTED] he cannot find.
actually, in the show, it tastes bad usually, the abridged even made a joke about this, some senzu beans get roasted by an attack, Goku smelled it and said "You know, I've found that cooking them actually makes them worse"
But Kyle, you missed the first stated use of the senzu bean! In the original Dragon Ball anime, the beans were used as a meal replacement. Korin himself claims that a single senzu could sustain the average human for 10 days. Presuming a modest caloric need of 2,000 calories a day while training at such a high altitude (a bit of a stretch), that means one bean would need to have 20,000 calories. For reference, the average lima bean has about 4 calories. This is without mentioning the fact that a senzu bean would somehow have to digest so slowly that it could release these calories over such a long period and still make you feel full. Talk about a lot of fiber! It would presumably also require all of the macronutrients and vitamins a person would need for 10 days. Either way, I love the show. I've been watching for years, and I intend to watch for many more.
If it was that energy dense and slow to digest it would also affect your gut and gut microbiota in weird and probably horrifying ways. I mean, your gut is really, really not set up to retain something for longer than a few hours to a week at most, ten days would be massively stretching it and probably go all the way from "lots of fiber" to "contains neurotoxin with muscle relaxant properties"... Also I would NOT want to spend any significant amount of time in a hyperbolic time chamber with someone while only eating these things, because the farts would probably be LEGENDARY.
Point of note, the Senzu Bean was actually designed as a hermit's best friend. One bean was meant to be able to feed a person for a week, because they were packed full of so much energy that the body could just spend a week processing it. its healing properties were derived from that concept, that it contains so much "energy" in it, that it just serves as a reservoir and processing chemical "Starting gun" for the body's metabolic processes. That doesn't make it make sense but it does mean that it was made by someone without a complex knowledge of the human body's healing processes and just wanted a plot device :P So it's not that it's a chemical cocktail of things meant to dull pain and restore stamina, just that the fighters in DBZ are all certified badasses who can shake off pain if they have the raw ki to dull the pain on their own. The bean just gives their body the energy that they need to do it. Think of them like chewable batteries.
I was actually thinking troughout the whole video "Aren't they just super full of ki energy or something?" Maybe they are, but yeah maybe they are just like 10,000 calories or something, and dbz characters' bodies can just use that to heal in an instant. (Or maybe the energy just _is_ ki, idk.)
What do you think I'm giving these away?! (Stares at vegeta) cuz im not. Cuts to next scene (vegetas thoughts ) when a super Sayain asks you for a senzu bean you say "how many" bald man!
You forgot the fact that Senzu beans also fill you up to the point that you don't need to eat for a few days (explained in original dragon ball series when senzu beans wer introduced). Also in the show the plant only grows 1 bean at a time not that that has anything to do with the effects unless the plant can only grow 1 bean at a time because it it takes alot of energy to create a literal super food
Way back before the Senzu became the magical plot device, its original purpose was just as food. It would make you feel full for up to ten days. SO, I'd love to see a follow-up that looks at the crazy caloric density that would require, and compare it to the densest known foods. I think that would be a rad segment.
You can see that when Vegeta gets blasted in the chest by Krillen in Namek(he wanted to get hurt then healed to get stronger), he has to get healed by Denden. I'm not sure if it was because they didn't have senzu beans at that time. Also when Goku is put in a healing capsule thing, I think it was also because of a lack of beans or I'm not sure if it was because the injuries were so severe that beans wouldn't have worked.
So how many calories would a Senzubean need to have? The original function for those beans, was for the consumer to be able to gain 10 days worth of nutrition in a SINGLE bean.
Kyle forgot a VERY important feature of the Senzu Bean that will make him regret eating them like candy. Each bean can keep a fighter full for an extended period of time, usually 10 days(shorter for Saiyan's). This actually DOES have a corresponding caloric intake as shown by Yajirobe's first time eating them. He literally gained 1 pound(English dub) per bean INSTANTLY.
What if the bean has no actual healing power? In the very beginning, it was magical food that would get you full for 10 days with a single bean. So it contains a lot of calories which in the DB universe could not only provide energy like in this world but also Ki which can be used to heal. In many occasions, a Senzu was only eaten to replenish the Ki-level and we see people heal themselves or others if they have enough Ki to do so. Maybe, it's the body itself that heals itself but with the boost of energy/Ki, it gets the job done faster. It would also explain why the heart virus Goku got, couldn't be healed with a bean as his body had not been able to do it by itself (he needed actual medicine).
Manek Iridius it doesn't matter how much sense it makes. I don't know anything about dragon ball but assuming you have to actively use ki to heal. The bean probably just replenishes everything including Ki which just so happens to be used to heal. Seems like just a coincidence. You're just construing a theory that you're establishing as fact simply bc it makes sense. If it hadn't crossed your mind them not having an explanation seems like the most sensible and logical conclusion. The beans were simply just plot armor. If you know anime when something like this exist it's contradicted a lot simply for plot. Hence Goku needing actual medicine, they wanted to make a segment where Goku is in trouble, but since they've established *the beans nigga* they couldn't do that so they simply ignored the sensu beans or came up with some dumb reason as to why they didn't work
In Dragon Ball they're also meant to satiate hunger for days(unless you're a Saiyan) which means they would be incredibly calorically dense. To be consumeable for humans they would need to be digested very slowly.
MY THEORY: Senzu beans are hybrids of plant and Namekian DNA. Namekians have the ability to regenerate lost limbs. (cell could only regenerate because he had Piccolo's DNA) Cell could push this regeneration to a higher level than a namekian ever has (to the knowledge of the viewers) so it's possible that this regenerative healing factor could be used by other non namekians when ingesting a senzu bean. OR: The beans came from namek in the first place and have naturally occurring healing chemicals. (Maybe the beans don't work the same if grown on namek because of the green sky and blue plant life, and only turn green and work when exposed to earth's atmosphere, sun, or something in the air.) Otherwise they are probably just grown by "watering" them with ki/energy You can't put too much science in dragonball, because so much of it depends on scientifically unexplainable things, like ki, souls(remember hell) time travel, magic(dragon balls) and physics defying acts
Really great theory, but namekians can't regenerate their lost strength or ki so you would still be tired and exhausted and also why doesn't this have more likes?
Ewwwww... Piccannibalo. So then does that mean Korin grows the Senzu beans by following Kami around the Lookout and collecting little skin scrapings to use as seeds? Or would Kami just cut off some of his fingers every once in a while to use as the Senzu seeds, and they have to wait so long between batches because he can only regrow them so fast at his age?
One things that was not mentioned in this episode is that sensual beans fill you up too. When Yajirobi ate a bunch of them he blew up like a balloon because he was so full.
a lesser known effect of a senzu bean is that it instantly makes you full...even Goku. In dragon ball i remember Korin telling Yageroby not to eat more than one and he did not follow his instructions and ate a handfull and ironicolly he allmost died ... from a senzu bean.
Tbh that may have been retconed at some point, 1 cause Toriyama doesn't give af 2 we have never seen the beans have that effect ever again in DBZ/Super i am pretty sure that was just to limit how many could be eaten in the original kid goku era of Dragon Ball. Now they usually "don't have enough" or they get destroyed instead of using the whole they fill you for a week excuse
Something that seems to be often forgotten is that Senzu Beans can provide enough nourishment for 10 full days.days. Despite that, Goku and most of the main cast typically are still shown eating relatively soon after ingesting one, likely due to the copious amounts of food they need to consume for their general level of exertion. Assumedly though, it's possible for the healing properties to be where the levels of nourishment typically go, most likely to speed up the body's natural healing processes. Something else worth noting is that Senzu Beans are supposed to taste like fish which while not especially helpful would probably constitute something of its chemical composition. It also has me wondering if you really love fish as much as you seemed to be packing those Senzu Beans away in the episode. And while I'm still here, friendly reminder that it's only the Saiyans named after Vegetables. Unless there's some form of Vegetable named after Bloomers that I've never heard of. And yes, Cell Saga is best Saga!
This is to assume that sensual beans have a high protein count with a diverse amino acid profile. Kyle did mention polysaccharides so they’re probably high in carbs and have a high profile of monounsaturated fats. They must be very nutrient dense with lots of vitamins and minerals
The senzu bean doesn’t increase energy or decrease pain. If the being is a Saiyan they get a genetic zenkai boost after they heal, if it’s a human they just return to how they were before without any power boost. The pain just goes away once the injury is healed.
Well, Senzu beans are stated to be magic for one, meaning the plant it's derived from is magical in nature. And you forget to mention, or completely forgot that the Senzu's also alleviates hunger, or at least it does in OG Dragonball, never brought up in Z. But Yajirobe ate a handful and he felt sick to the stomach due to the fact. And the bean also boosts diseases like the Heart Virus, causing either no effect or a worsening effect. And you can split the bean in half, and gain the full affect, like when Goku split the Senzu in half and gave one to Gohan, and the other to Krillin just before the Over 8,000 meme. And you should've totally said over 8,000 instead of protesting to not saying over 9,000. Also, on the Nimbus you must be pure of Heart, it's not from density. And the cloud is likely made from the types in Otherworld, or the death world, right under snake way. This Means the cloud would be spiritual in nature and thus density might not even come into effect at all.
The sensu bean made the heart virus worse because it boosted gokus energy back up to max which put more strain on his heart. It was an indirect effect.
I've always thought that senzu beans operate by altering time and being ridiculously calorie dense. The lore says that a senzu can keep you full for 10 days which equates to about 20-25 kcal which is about the same as about 7 pounds of fat or eating 14 pounds of sugar. If these calories were readily usable by cells this would account for the spike in energy from eating a senzu. The other two parts of the bean magic could explained if some time accelerating substance or magic (which we already know exists via hyperbolic time chamber) was transported through an antibody-coupled liposome that detected inflammatory proteins (like interleukins) and released the time stuff. This could accelerate the cells around wounds to let them heal faster using the calories from the bean and would reduce pain by removing the stimulus. Love the show Kyle, and thanks for the thought experiments! (Slight correction) NeutralGuyDoubleZero mentions that the hyperbolic time chamber is actually another dimension. So as another example of time manipulation, Bulma's time machine
The hyperbolic time chamber doesnt have increased time speed due to magic, its just a dimension with a different time flow thats connected to earth via doorway. Having time magic crunched down to bean size is a bit absurd even for dragonball. Theyre magical. Thats it.
Well they worked so well for goku imo because of his saiyan appetite (metabolism) and his ability to utilize 10 days worth of calories at once properly whereas when yajirobe ate a handful he just got super fat (for anyone who didn't watch dragon ball yajirobe used to actually be a very fit powerful swordsman. ) that being said in DBZ they seemed to be ret conned to apply 10 days worth of rest and nutrition at once.
trav v Nail: “you wouldn’t even have to spend anything on production.” Piccolo: “ok, but what would we call this hypothetical clothes store?” Nail and Kami: “BIG GREEN THREADS!”
@Holden Mcgroine not necessarily, if they used their own energy and deconstructed themselves for mat.s or just work at such a speed that they destroy themselves.
" So if you were bunched in the face for 10 episodes in a row...." haha lol so true. great comment! the writing and clever comments jokes makes these videos equally enjoyable along with the superb science content for fictional lore. keep it up sir.
Ironically, Goku is by far the densest character in anime history yet he floats on cloud ^^ Regarding the regenerative power of a senzu bean, there's a scene where Goku is sent to the hospital with multiple fractures(at the beginning the Freeza arc) and instantly heals his fractures after eating a senzu bean yet this video focused mainly on what seems to be "flesh wounds". Assuming the bean has a component that accelerates the person's metabolism which is required for accelerated healing, is there an hypothetical threshold at which the metabolism becomes so "energetic" that it would provoke organ shutdown like a cardiac arrest or hyperventilation? Basically, is there a hypothetical "cap" for our metabolism that would prevent us from "boosting" our healing capabilities beyond a certain point? Is there a unit of measure for metabolism?
@@JimmyR42 LOL you got me there.. Goku is by far the densest organism in pretty much any anime. Metaphorically or otherwise. And while his level of stupidity is almost unmatched. The power Goku possesses at any age is enormous. And because mass is energy. Due to his enormous energy he also must be quite physically dense. Weather this is a biological feature of all powerful organisms within the Dragon Ball universe. I can't really say. But you must also recognize the fact that he is a Sayin. And Sayin's only become more powerful. And assumingly more dense. The more damage they receive. And the rigor of their training. And while there may be a biological limit. Of which we have seen Goku reach many times. Only to see him smash through it. So while the over use of Senzu. Maybe detrimental to a normal human. Goku normally goes a great many times beyond his normal biological limits. With the kaioken alone. Not to mention Super Saiyan and above. I mean at this point he can destroy the universe. If he was so inclined. But then you have to wonder. If he has enough energy to destroy the universe. He would have to have at least the same amount of energy as the universe. And if he had as much energy as the universe. Then he would have to have as much Mass as a universe. Giving him a gravitational field greater then the infinitesimal point of the big bang. However as there is no Canon supporting this Theory. I am forced to assume. That it is not the amount of energy within him. At least not at all times anyway. But rather the amount of energy he can utilize from around him. Which has many sources of Canon. So while a senzu bean may help him along like anyone else. I think it would take more than an overdose of senzu beans. To stop Goku. Despite his Cardiac condition. And the maximum heart rate of a human is 220 BPM. And so if your heart rate increased with the level of metabolic function. And 1 Senzu Bean = A normal level of metabolic activity. Being 40 to 60 BPM. Then it should only take just over 3 and 1/2 Senzu Bean to overdose a human being. Also the technical term is "Hypermetabolism" And it is the physiological state of increased rate of metabolic activity and is characterized by an abnormal increase in the body's basal metabolic rate. Hypermetabolism is accompanied by a variety of internal and external symptoms, most notably extreme weight loss, and can also be a symptom in itself. Just ask Choji. But I think that's a different universe. Great question though. I hope this answers it.
Honestly, green Kyle looked like Kyle before he started showing symptoms of being a villan My hypothesis, curent Kyle is OG Kyle's evil twin OG Kyle is now fighting back (now green for some reason, I'm not sure about that). Here's to hoping OG Kyle wins
One of the things that could increase the healing-rate of a senzu would be if there were some plant or combination of plants that jacked up your metabolic rate. However, the limiting factor is still speed, and while the bean would be naturally exceedingly nutrient dense, as you've stated on this show before, mass doesn't come out of nowhere. The beans just do not look that energy dense to me and those DBZ fighters don't seem to rocking a lot of fat deposits on their bodies. So that regenerative mass has to come from something, so even if you managed to get around the time issue you'd still have an energy-to-mass issue. I don't think I'm smart enough to do the math explicitly, but depending on the grievousness of the wound you would require some magnitude of available energy and metabolic material to craft into new muscle, bone, and skin. This could theoretically mean that a senzu bean would be volatile enough to possibly explode with some force at most, and at the least leave the person starving as all their available metabolic material was used up in a rush by the body to heal a wound. It would be less prevalent with a small wound or just general wounds and fatigue, but Yamcha should have been wrecked after healing his whole chest cavity via senzu. Sorry if I'm over-conceptualizing this but as senzu beans have been shown to heal spinal nerve damage, a process that generally doesn't happen in the span of a human lifetime naturally (if at all), they have to be packing a lot of energy per bean, like explosive levels of energy. Yet those guys are popping them like they're tic-tacs.
there's one chemical process you forgot about...adrenaline... the beans could be overclocking the body's healing functions using its adrenaline to pass of its healing properties through the body, a big clue of that is the fact that when Goku had the heart virus the beans didn't help at all, which means the beans affect the heart in some fashion.
I think they stopped making this a plot point because the amount of calories goku would use when he punches someone one time. Each bean would need to have about 20,000 calories at least. In another episode Kyle explains how much you’d have to eat to sustain super strength. I suspect goku would burn through an entire bowl of senzus to keep up in one fight alone. Maybe they took this into consideration when writing the show and stopped making the 10 days of nourishment important.
What if it has nanomachines or maybe even genetically engineered cells in it that carry the chemicals around your body and help with the healing process by directly involving themselves in the repair process?

Wouldnt the senzu bean heat the fighter up? Just imagine all that energy going to your body at once. Also, celular division is an exothermic process, so if it happened that fast it would burn you. Greetings fron arg btw
Hi Kyle, Healing wounds would also require building block to create new cells and additional energy to fuel the cell healing. The senzu beans would need to hold an extreme amounts of nutrients and have a high caloric content. Which is seen in the anime because characters can go days with only eating senzu beans.
@@_KlootMalloot_ Yes that's what I was talking about in response to Amplify Magic. The Senzu beans before Z didn't heal. It's just that Goku functioned on anime hero logic, so having a full belly ment he could fight better. But the beans didn't actually heal people until Z
@@_KlootMalloot_ sorry. Senzu beans have always given you energy and healed you. Yes for a normal person they keep you full for up to 10 days. The whole point of them has always been to restore energy and the fighters physical health to perfection.
KYLE! BONUS EPISODE IDEA! You drawing things. Someone posts in chat, you see the comment and draw the thing. Simple. Easy. Yes. (Just saiyan, but your art is wonderful and has evolved a lot over the time this channel has grown!)
I was wondering this too. If we used human muscles as a baseline, how much muscle would goku need to be as strong as he currently is? How dense would those muscles have to be to fit inside his body at its current size? Would goku become a black hole?

If you're interested in getting more "energy", I suggest using Guaraná extract or Açaí extract, as these are not only commonly used in many countries, but will also get you a lot more "energy" than caffeine would. PS: Great show, Kyle! Keep up with the good work!

Okay hold up.. morphine isnt derived from the seeds of plant.. it's the milky product, the "juice" if youd like that all the alkaloids come from. Even the seeds are just coated in it. But the seed itself is NOT how morphine or any other opiate alkaloids are derived.. if any of that where truly derived from the seed poppy seeds would be controlled just as heavily as the plant
Oh no, man. Gotta fix your instant transmission form. Forearm and two fingers should be more vertical, not so angled almost like a salute like you did.
Hear me out... micro black holes. There is a micri black hole in the middle of the bean the compresses the healing nutirients. When the heros eat one the gravity well created causes time dialation that speeds up healing and the compressed nutrients sustain the body for days
Except your glossing over how to disapaite a black hole. Which theres no known way to do. An how youd keep that from causing the bean eater a horrible death... followed by literally everything else in that galaxy with it. Which also is currently believed impossible
Interesting episode HOWEVER there is one thing I must correct you on. Morphine makes you sleepy! So having morphine or an Opioid derivative as a component would make the the product inherently a downer. The amount of caffeine you would need to put in to counteract this AND give a fighter energy to fight would have to be massive. Aspirin on the other hand which can be derived from willow bark can be more effective as it doesn't have that drowsy effect on the body. On the flip side you could look at the energy side of the equation and sub caffeine for a stronger alternative like what they put in energy drinks or even consider that they mean energy literally! Perhaps the bean contains a metabolic aid that assists in processing nutrients in a "emergency" burn of calories and fat to give that extra boost of energy which would be more in line with the exhausted fighters actually having energy afterwards vs just being more alert.
Hey Kyle, love the show. For the "energy" I would have used other chemicals like cocaine, as a stimulant, however caffeine is likely good enough. However there is one thing that you are forgetting. Before Dragonball Z used the sensu bean as a plot device to heal people, it was actually stated that "A sensu bean gives you all the nutrition you need for a day." (Loose translation, but an accurate one). So is THAT even possible? And how much would it weigh? Lets do some math! So first is the energy component. A human normally needs roughly 2000 kilocalories (Calories with a Capital C) per day. The more energy-dense substances are fats. from the best resources I could find, a good average for fats are roughly 9 kilocalories per gram. So for just the energy, you'd need roughly 222 grams of fat. But what about protein? Well an average person needs roughly 46-56 grams of protein per day (although more if you're active, so we'll assume 60, as these Z fighters are extraordinarily active) now protein also provides calories, but only 4 kilocalories per gram instead of 9, but that'll still reduce the amount of fat we'd need to about 195 grams. so 195 grams of fat, and 60 grams of protein. so each bean would weigh in at 255 grams so far. or half a pound. But what about vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients? Boron 20 mg calcium 2500 mg chloride 3600 mg choline 3500 mg copper 10 mg flouride 10 mg folic acid 1 mg iodine 1.1 mg iron 45 mg magnesium 350 mg manganese 11 mg molybdenum 2 mg nickel 1 mg phosphorus 4000 mg sodium 2300 mg vanadium 1.8 mg vitamin A 3 mg vitamin b3 35 mg vitamin b6 100 mg vitamin c 2000 mg vitamin d 0.1 mg vitamin e 1000 mg zinc 40 mg (These figures obtained from WebMD and as such are subject to skepticism, but at the very least it gives us a base. Also many of these are measured in micrograms, instead of milligrams, so I had to convert to milligrams so they're able to be added easily.) Also, this is NOT Full Metal Alchemist... They did their math wrong. So that adds up to an additional 19.531 grams. Meaning that our new Sensu Bean would weigh in at a minimum of 274.531 (roughly 275 grams, 0.275 kilograms, or 0.605237253 pounds. So each individual bean would have to weigh in at 60% of a pound in order to actually provide all the nutrition that a person needs in the run of a day. minimum. More if there are some carbs, or fibre in there. (Which is highly likely) So maybe Korin Shrinks them with magic? So they're super-dense... that makes sense. And if you add a touch of opium, cocaine, and various chemicals to help promote healing... yeah you're dealing with a MASSIVE bean. Likely weighing several pounds. And yet it fits in the palm of your hand! Why? Because MAGIC!
