Dragon Ball Z's character designer returns: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru 

It's great that Nakatsuru is coming back to series after so long and is bringing his own designs to Modern Dragon Ball.

Nakatsuru is the man. He even illustrated for the short Dr Slump sequel during the mid 90s. His art was so faithful to Toriyama's that it looked almost indistinguishable from Toriyama's at the time.

Great to have my favorite db animator back. I actually didn’t know about this show until the trailer but it makes sense they got him on since he is unique in that he really tries to make an effort to keep up with toriyama’s most modern style.

I think the artstyle design in DBM was brought by someone who was making all of DB animators's work look more easy to define in animation

Goku in Super Broly has to be one of the best fresh designs of Goku I've ever seen. Everyone looks gorgeous. Shintani was fantaaaastic.

I'm glad to see you back, and I also watched that podcast you linked on Instagram. It's fascinating stuff. Overall I am also pleased to see Nakatsuru make his return to the series and as the Manga reaches it's 100th Chapter and the possibilities of getting announcements at Jump Festa and more details in Late January for DB Battle Hour has got me really excited for what they have planned for Dragon Ball's 40th anniversary!

Honestly. This guy is honestly a good choice. Like you said. It’s mainly the colouring that puts yamamuro in a grey area. But the colouring in yo son goku and his friends OVA with the design of either yamamuro or nikatsoru would be nice. But from the looks of the trailer I’m happy with that design and coloring

It does look really good even if Nakatsuru is using the newer designs. Also yeah thankfully the color designer, whether it be new or old, has better colors.

As a relatively new fan not blinded by nostalgia, I will say the old dragon ball and Z designs looked better than modern dragon ball.

Toriyama’s modern art style was used in parts of DBS Broly and the DBS anime but it wasn’t consistent throughout. It doesn’t seem to be consistent in Daima either. I only really saw it in (parts) of the Vegeta Vs Goku fight, Goku spinning the pole, and the smile at the end of the teaser. I don’t mind though, the whole thing still looks great regardless, and DB has always done this.

I knew if Nakatsuru, Shintani and Kubota are coming back, they would adopt Toriyama's modern style. Part of me still wish for Buu and GT style though, especially for the characters' child forms. I noticed at the final frame of Goku, it feels like Z Goten/GT Goku design but with rounder jaw and eyes lines, demonstrated how Toriyama's modern artstyle still retained some of the traits he got from Cell and Buu Saga. 5:10 Now that's the late Z style I knew and loved. I loved it when Fenyo adopted that style for his modern works.

Love Nakatsuru, but i think Trunks slicing Frieza was revealed to be Shida in one of his interviews... could be wrong though!

Before Daima I had no issue and criticism with Shintani design. But now after watching his design and Nakatsuru's recent design for Daima I agree with whatever you said. But All in All I can't wait to see his works 🔥

I just hate the hair highlights. I thought the hair looked incredible in the broly film. My favorite its ever looked. It flowed so wonderfully and there was something about that lack of detail that made your brain add detail while the highlights make it feel more segmented and blocky.

While shintani is still my favorite approach, I love that Nakatsuru is bringing Toriyama’s modern style to an animated project.

I love the Buu saga design, that's my favourite from DBZ. Despite all arc problems, changes in design of characters are very noticeable after the first two arcs.

I agree that line variation is important to make the characters look like they have more definition, which is harder to do when line work is too clean from digital (Yammauro) but I do prefer when the actual line work does have solid lines to them, rather than how Shintai's linework was translated into the Super Broly movie. I don't think the other artists at times got it, and made the line work a bit exaggerated to some points I thought the characters looked too grainy and sketchy at times. The Shintani sheets still look the best because the art looks a lot looser and the characters lack the stiffness they've had on digital for so long, but I do like that the shot here of Goku fighting Vegeta just uses line width variation but on solid outlines more.

I'm gonna say it broly dbs goku may be the best style that modern goku fits in

I personally prefer shintani's designs but if this is what'll stick I'll also be happy!

I miss the golden age of Dragonball bodybuilding

Shintani is good but his work seems a little flat at times, I’m actually surprised he’s revered so much by the community. I think everybody was so tired of modern Yamamuro by the end DBS but I’m very happy to see Nakatsuru return.

I don't understand what's going on in the DragonBall Universe. If Toriyama or whoever in control wants to continue making DB content why not just give us a full flushed out story with badass animation and character development. We don't need character reverting back to kids or new transformations ever few episodes or even a blast of nostalgia. DBZ really dropped the ball with the Gotenks SSJ3 and Buu arc. Most of us old school DB fans just want to see our character we love so much go through a cleared planned out arc and fight tough guys. I haven't been able to enjoy DB in a long time. Super was half way enjoyable but it tried so hard with all of the transformations and one uping.

I will miss the pure black hair and the classic belt but I welcome these amazing Kanzenban Covers inspired designs.

Who was the key animator for the Goku vs Vegeta part from the Daima trailer, it looks amazing

I hate these eyes. Way too simplistic and cartoonish, lacking the charisma of the original designs. Gives me a bit of vibes of something like One Piece. And on top of all of that, it makes adult Goku look younger (AGAIN). I don't think that wasting talent on copying a style of a deranged old man (yes, I lost all respect for Toriyama) who doesn't know what he is doing anymore, is a good thing to do here. Unless it's only for the spin off. Then again, modern DB should die as a whole, anyway, so I shouldn't care too much for the artstyle alone.

2:29 that is a really good shot of Goku and why I like Nakatsuru, that looks far closer to how Goku should look than how he did generally in the Super Broly movie. Especially at 2:11. Goku's face just doesn't look right to me. The really high mouth and pointy chin. Where as at 2:26 Goku I has a lower mouth and squared off chin and ears not being as jutting out.

The new series looks dumb so I’m just hoping with fingers crossed that if we EVER get another season of Super, these much appreciated changes with the art style will follow🤞🏾

All this for Vincent Chainsard to solo , don't bring those old men to the table and say "oh this looks good", the series still sucks tho, it doesn't even look like the wano arc or demon slayer level of animation, this looks so basic for me to sleep, they past their primes. Shida however is okey.

I honestly really dislike the hair highlights, yes they are better placed and accurate of Toriyama's newer work... but it still carries that plastic look and feel Luckily it's my only real complaint design wise, I overall love what they are doing visually

I still think it's a shame we'll never have a full series with Shintani's "DBS Broly" design, I felt in love with the art direction of that movie and was really hoping it would become the "new look" of the franchise

Well at least the animation won't be bad, btw It's not nostalgia or "what your used to" or anything. You can show people who have barely or never seen dragon ball all those different animation styles and most likely they will say dragon ball Z (especially cell saga and buu saga) had the best animation. That Goku vs Cell fight when they were going ham IS the best animation this show has ever had and that's just FACTS. The older hand drawn animation is OBJECTIVELY better than GT's, Super, super hero movie, and dragon ball daima. The definition on the body and eye's look crisper, the hair was great, coloring on point, just better in terms of consistency. Battle of God's was admittedly not bad in terms of coloring and definition I will say but still had a more plastic look when not enshrouded in aura, ROF was worse than BOG to me but I won't say it was objectively worse. Dragon ball super Broly and maybe MUI Goku vs Jiren are the only one's that was on that level but that's it, through the whole cell saga and buu saga that animation was just consistently good.

I love Shintani's work on Broly. I wish they'd go back to that.
