Great short documentary. The Red Dragon Fruit was so juicy but your face told me the white one was sweeter We ate these for the first time Malaysia. They were served frozen and our kids just ate them straight from the skin. They wanted more. Thanks again for the video and I will check out the site for more technical detail about growing them.
I am growing the red variety. I once bought the white one and put it in a fruit salad that I brought to a pot luck dinner. I think it added an element of beauty and uniqueness to the salad. A few people asked me what it was, and said they liked it. What's not to like?
Hi! The time it will take for your plants to bear fruit depends on several things. How big the plants were when planted, the care you have given them while they grew, and the weather conditions in which they have grown. It is possible to get a piece or two of fruit the year after you plant the dragon fruit plants, but I would plan more on two years after - again, depending on the above conditions. But be patient - the wait is worth it!
No. The dragon fruit originated in Central America. It was discovered by explorers in the early 1800's and then brought to Vietnam where it was planted extensively. It is a delicious fruit!
I like to take dragon fruit with me on hikes and road trips. When I get thirsty or worn out I have one and dragon fruit quenches thirst and gives a boost of energy. Just eating one makes you feel a few years younger.Try one!
i love dragonfruit. it is available here in our local walmart for $2.97 each. and that is cheap. sometimes it goes for $4.99 each at Loblaws. thanks for showing the video of the actual plant.
You should have no problem, as far as the weather is concerned, but be sure your soil drains well and you have full sun. I would check with your local Cooperative Extension agency to confirm with your area conditions. Yes, check with Pine Island Nursery on our website Nursery page and contact them . They have the plants! TFGSF
HI, Prickly pears are not grown commercially in our area, of that I am aware. Instead we grow the dragon fruit, which is VERY tasty! Look for growers in the western states for prickly pears. Good luck! TFGSF
Yes! Your website is something that I've been looking for, and I like that you're a collection of real people and not a corporate food, inc. type place. If you have a facebook page, it makes it is like having your site bookmarked, except I can easily access and share your information from any computer, even if mine dies. Also, if you do updates every now and then, it will remind us that you have something we wanted to try.
HI! They look like they are 45 gal pots. The bigger the pot the better the plant can grow and the better production you will get. Get the biggest pot you can afford, and make sure to plant in a well drained mix. TFGSF
Yes, here in south Florida we can grow some truly wonderful, and delicious fruits and vegetables. But, don't undervalue what can grow where you live, and the what your neighborhood provides to you. Even in the city, residents can grow delicious vegetables and fruits in pots. You may be able to grow delicious blueberries, where we here in the south of Florida cannot. And what I wouldn't give to watch the leaves change color in the fall! Look around, there's a lot of good things where you live!
You ought to be able to grow these cactus plants in Texas, just be sure to protect them from any freezes. I suggest that you contact your area Cooperative Extension agency to ask their advice, as they know your local conditions. Good luck!
Surprisingly i have grow one here in France inside a glasshouse from a seed collected in a vietnam's fruit, it grow well and get adapted to temperature variable 8 to 50°C in this glasshouse, it give me now more fruits during september to november every year since 2007 i sowed it, up to 5-6 good big fruits if i help pollinated flower in time, but can also form fruits even without pollinating by hand. Flowers are incredible.
They grow plentiful and wild at sea level, Kona, Hawaii and go up the coconut trees eighty feet. They love growing out of the tops of six foot rock walls, (lava rock). Mahalo for your kokua.
As with all fruit, some are sweeter than others. It sounds like you tasted one that did not have as high a sugar content. Don't give up, there are plenty of sweet dragon fruit out there!
Hi there, when you walk into the supermarket, how can one tell if the dragonfruit he or she picks up is either the red flesh or white flesh variety? The stickers on them don't usually say... (at least in the supermarket I go to doesn't have any useful stickers... they just say "dragonfruit" and that's about all it says).
The length of time to get fruit depends upon how large the cutting is to start with, and what kind of care you give to it, but it is possible to get fruit in 2-3 years. Thanks for asking!
I know you answered a similar question earlier, but can you be so kind and answer it anyway. I live in the tropical island of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean, do you think I can grow this plant here, or is it to wet and humid????? Also, I've been told not to grow them on trees, since the plants might grow over 7 feet tall and make them incapable of growing fruit. Is this true??? PLEASE ANSWER ME
You have a sharp eye! Yes, that pineapple top was planted soon after the video was shot, and it is now growing very well. I should have a pineapple from it by early next year! You can do this too. Just place the top of the pineapple into the dirt about 2". Water. Afterward, give it as much sun and humidity as you can, and water when the dirt is dry. You should have a pineapple in a year or so with proper care. Check out the U of Fla publication on the Edis.ufl website. Good luck! TFGSF
It would be AMAZING if you guys did a video on your growers. I was looking into buying some fruit from your website but there are a lot of different growers and I wish there were pictures of the sizes to give (crazy people like me who can't picture how many fruits are in 10lbs) us an idea of what each size looks like.
Im living in Germany, ive grew 3 different pitahaya sorts from seeds, they are very small right noow, but i guess if i have a big pot with enough soil that i can still transport, to take them outside in the summertime, it will maybe grow fruits :)
PART #1 From Adrian Hunsberger, Miami-Dade County Extension Agent: Worldwide, the fruit that is called dragon fruit is produced by at least 8 different species and hybrids in 4 different genera of cacti. In Florida, most dragon fruit are in the genus Hylocereus. To get good fruit production, grow 2 different clonal varieties of the same species or other species of pitaya in the genus Hylocereus.
I have a giant cactus that is swirly in growth and produces a prickles fruit that is red and is very much like a dragon fruit on the inside. It is white and full of tiny black seeds and tastes kind of like kiwi but less sweet. I am unable to find out information on it. Do you have any info that might be helpful to me?
ӄ ][ /\/ Ꮆ ♛ ֆ }{ Ø ]2 † ¥ I got one up here in Kentucky for $2.50 today at an Indian market. They also have some other tropical products that I can't find easily north of Florida.
the first time i ate this fruit that i bought from one of our neighbor , i cant stand laughing and had the feeling that i cannot explain, it is just that, among all the fruits that i have eaten and tasted , this fruit do have a very different taste and i like it, really really taste good, the white flesh that was i bought, so sweet ..
HI, It is difficult to tell for certain which dragon fruit plant will bear red or white fruits, unless you have been growing several varieties for a while and so are familiar with the slight differences in the plants. Ask the nurseryman where you purchased the plants to identify which plant is which, and then be sure to label the plants. Enjoy!
PART #3 Google this factsheet: Pitaya Growing in the Florida Home Landscape, by Jonathan H. Crane and Carlos F. Balerdi So, if you want good fruit production, Cereus peruvianus is not a pollinator. If you want to create a new hybrid, Cereus peruvianus is pollinator for other dragon fruit in the genus Cereus.
It is VERY difficult to tell the color of the pitaya flesh from the outside. The experienced grower can do it, but not many else. Ask the produce manager or the market buyer to tell you the color, or suggest to them to buy a certain color that you like.
hi question for you?! i am growing my plant in brevard fl like 3or4 county's above you. i got my when it was like 6 or 7 inch's and it only had one green part grow and now it has 3 parts and each one is about 2 and half feet tall. my question is i was talking to someone&they said the only way to have it pollinate is by having 2 plants growing right to each other so it can cross pollinate each other?! is that true? your video said bees and bats pollinate it. do i need a second plant or will 1 do?
i hate how people say "it tastes so great!" and not how it really tastes, ok, so the flesh on the inside smells kinda like pumpkin and tastes like a bland kiwi, the red one probaly tastes sweeter. its soo good tho not going to lie :)
thegreengamer 83 Are you kidding me? You probably went to Costco and bought one, I grow my own and boy let me tell you... and another thing people all have different tastes so don't bullshit about how others are lying, you just haven't had a good dragon fruit
To me they aren't sweet at all but more like really juicy lettuce but even milder when it comes to taste and the seeds add a unique kind of flavor to the fruit
I have seen a couple in Jax, I haven't been watching them long enough to see it fruit. I have a small one growing & just left it out in the cold so far will see if it dies or not. I'm sure you would have to cover them & hope for not to long of freezing temps. The one in Arlington at the mental health place is solid 7' & bushy but I see them cover it when I ride by.( it looks like DF I'm 200' away driving)
Gee, I don't know if you will get a plant from the pitaya seeds. Our growers here grow their pitaya from cuttings of known varieties. With that method of propagation, they are certain of the fruits that will be produced. The problem with growing fruits from seeds, is that you are not sure of who that parents are, and the resulting fruits may not be of good quality, OR, they could be the best in the world! You just don't know. But give it a try and let us know what happens! good luck!
Like the person in the previous comment, the success of dragon fruit depends on where you are in California. Contact your County Cooperative Extension agency. Good luck! TFGSF
Sure, but You probably will not have enough sun,, or heat for it to do well. this is a tropical/subtropical cactus and to do well should be grown in those conditions. TFGSF
Cracking of the fruit could be due to irregular watering, like a heavy rain. Contact the Miami-Dade Cooperative Extension at (305) 248-3311 and ask to speak to a Master Gardener - they will have other ideas as to the source of the cracking.
Just watched another video that shows how the fruit isn’t complex ripe if the fruit still has green on it, has to be yellow or brown tips on the fruit .. interesting
I'd suggest contacting your County Extension agent and ask them. They will have more accurate information on your soils and climate than I do. Good luck! TFGSF
