I watched all the videos related to the Dragon. It was quite the undertaking! Bravo, that you stuck with it. You persevered through making the changes with armature. Ultimately getting the project done. Including the painting of it. I have made sculptures and paper mache pieces that I wasn't particularly happy about. It is part of the learning process. We learn by how we do! Your willingness to allow "us" to see your struggles with the Dragon speaks volumes of the honest "artist" and teacher that you are. You are a breath of fresh air!

red and black would look nice. Perhaps follow the natural trend of a bit darker shading on the top and lighter on the bottom

I'd love to the moment I can find the time and space. I adore sculpting, and I've already thought about how I'd create my dragon... Most likely about the same size as yours, outdoors safe, and perhaps give him a pose where he's sitting up on his back-legs and holding a flowerpot - Or perhaps just form his fore-claws into a pose where I can interchange between a flowerpot, a birdbath, a bowl, maybe a colorful globe, ect.

My son and me made a volcano inspired by your method. And by your method I mean mixing all kind of materials to get the job done just right. I would have never thought to use tile glue (basically cement) to make a paper mache form. I'll upload the photo to your site. Plan is to have it spit actual fire sometime this week, weather permitting. I'll upload the video if we pull it off.

I really love your circle skin!!! I think it will be fantastic I think he would look so cool in a pink to orange ombre with pink underbelly into bright fire orangy body I am a little tired of green dragons lol. I am sure whatever you do will be fantastic!!! just think of him sitting on top of a fantasy book display at a library FABULOUS

This is absolutely amazing! Was this a commissioned piece? For whom? What did they pay you to create it? Is this the largest sculpt you're every done? Sorry for all the questions. Just curious.

It's the largest sculpture I've done, and the heaviest. I gave it to the local Habitat for Humanity for their annual art auction. I don't know where it ended up. Somewhere nice, I hope. It was too big for me to keep in my house, but I do have a strong urge to make another dragon. I'm glad you like him. :)

Just add more flour. You might also want to squeeze more of the water out of the toilet paper. To make it quite a lot thicker, knead in some corn starch.

This clay looks wetter than you recipe videos. I want to do something similar to you where I spread it over something so how do I make the clay wetter and more spreadable?

Hi Amy. Just add less flour. In fact, one of my blog readers makes beautiful dog sculptures with the recipe, without adding any flour at all - but I've never tried that myself. I like it wetter now, because it's easier to spread a thin layer. And it's so strong, a thin layer is really all you need.

Ms.Jonni , i have a question as i 'm trying to do a paper mache dragon thanks to your useful website! do we add the details with aper mache clay or do i have to use gesso ?

mehdi mallek The gesso is just a primer to help the paint look nice, but you can use it to add some fur with a stiff brush. I use the paper mache clay to make details, though.

Yes, you can add new paper mache clay to dried paper mache clay. We do it all the time.

You need a Barn ,Jonni!lol Is your back yard large enough!? Or..a metal storage container! Cost wise they are cheaper that construction! Have the welding class at the local technical school come cut you some windows and Viola!! Studio!

Did the recipe you used for this project actually have toilet paper in it? It spreads on more like a paste rather than a clay. In other words, which recipe is it? I noticed you have a few different kinds on your blog, and the texture of the clay/paste is exactly what I’ve been looking for.

Yes, I used the original paper mache clay recipe for the dragon, but I didn't use as much flour as the recipe calls for. I do that when I want to cover a large area fast. Even when it's paste-like it dries extremely hard with just a thin coat.
