@@Nay089 They went into detail over their personal experiences playing, so they definitely did play. But it certainly didn't feel like they played recently. Besides, wikis typically have their info better than this.
Dragon quest 9 was my favorite tbh. I grew up playing that one with my buddies. I remember us all getting together to go through the grottoes and beat all the bosses together. I remember it being brutally hard at first, but once we mastered classing and comboing we would have a blast. I’ve put thousands of hours into that one as the content is nearly endless. And I remember the sheer joy of beating all the nasties. I also loved 6 but. 9 holds my heart. There’s something special about it, all the dragon quests at that. Those games bring me a sense of joy no other games do. The lovable characters and townsfolk, the interesting quests, and the captivating simplicity draw me in as I explore the beautiful worlds joined by a beautiful symphony fit perfectly for the situations. Dragon quest never fails me, and 11 is one of the most enchanting ones thus far. If you’ve never played dragon quest, pick it up. Anyone can play it with ease, and EVERYONE will love it. Unless you don’t like turn based combat in which case ur a pussy go die
Dragon Quest 6 will always hold a special place in my heart, it's what got me into the series. As an 11 year old kid, I was absolutely enamored with the vastness of the world I was able to explore, imagine my utter glee when I discovered that there was an entire second world to explore in conjunction to the one I already knew, it was magic. 6 may not be the most popular of the dragon quest series, but I can't help but love it with all my heart
Played through 1-3 in the past couple years. On 4 now, loving it so far. Simple but there's always wrinkles in the gameplay and progression that catch you off guard and make you say "Oh I can't believe they thought to do that." Gaming comfort food.
The added party chat in those games are criminally underrated. I spent like an extra hour in each town purely just from talking to everybody and seeing what my party has to say about what each NPC says, and then when something happens story-wise the NPC's all say something else, and the party members have responses to those too! They don't even have that type of extensive party chat in DQ anymore just because it was so much extra dialogue and work
Thanks a lot for watching! The series means so much to so many people that I thought it would be a nice touch to add in how we personally felt about each title.
Jordan Rudek I know how that is. I started with dragon Warrior 1 NES on a whim and then 3 on GBC so those two will always hold a special place for me even after all the other ones I played.
Advice for those interested in DQ 7: Play the 3DS version. It's streamlined, and often that's a bad thing, but in DQ7's case it vastly improves the pacing.
@@hecatomb1864 Played about a 3rd of the way through without issues, but that is unfortunate. I still kinda have to weigh the potential lost progress in a crash against the extra hours of bland wandering around and grinding of the PS1 original.
Dragon Quest 4 was my first real foray into the DQ universe. I loved it from start to finish. I quickly picked up Dragon Quest 5 and at that point I was 100% hooked on the series. What hurts the most is that Dragon Quest 10 has been held back form the US and Europe. For years I've dreamed of a Dragon Quest MMORPG and it's agonizing to know that there is one but that we can't play it.
@@ruggie.74 There were even times kids from school will see a free day in Japan when a new Dragon Quest comes out. Heck, the series is even so popular there that even the new upcoming Yakuza 7 is sending a tribue to the franchise. And I do think Dragon Quest XI was quite popular in the west and will be even more popular now on the Switch. The first DQ game I played through was Dragon Quest IX by the way. Which caught me by surprise when they talked about the game in the video. I stay away from Souls like games and brutal punishing JRPG's. And actually, Dragon Quest IX wasn't that hard. The final boss can be a challenge but the whole game shouldn't be a problem when you played properly through the game. The second narrator in the video is unfortunately hard to hear because he is not loud enough ;/
I remember when the DQ hero came out as a dlc character for smash, people were upset and in the comments, Japanese players were wondering why there wasn't as much excitement in the West as there was in Japan. I find it kinda sad people here in the West aren't as into dragon quest, but, you can't have everything
DQ9 was the first title I played and is still my favorite for its sheer endless content. The endgame can easily keep you busy for several hundred hours and even if you found all grotto bosses, got the best equipment, found and cooked every alchemy recipe and finsihed all side quests, there's still the class system to discover. Yes, its challenging, but personally, I got the impression that 11 is much more so. And the fairy tagging along with your lead makes up for not having party members, she is hilarious. The story may seem convaluted at first glance, but there is never an instance where it doesn't make sense and by the end, everything falls into place nicely. In addition to that, the towns you visit have some very charming (and heartbreaking) stories on their own as you'd expect from this series.

III and IX are still my favorites in the franchise. Such great stories, customization, and fun adventures to be had. In IX's case; with Yuji Hori and the devs throwing around remaking it in the DQXI engine, the Switch is a perfect console for it to come to. Switch local and online multiplayer? Day Zero. Also; it is a damn shame we never got DQX in the west. The game is great; from what I hear, and looks like a blast for those who can get past the whole MMO aspect. If FFXI and FFXIV can prove that they can be some of the best games in their respective franchise, I think its only fair to see if DQX can be given a fair shake.
Jordan Rudek Actually, yes! I have DQXI:S preordered. I also went ahead and preordered a physical copy of the upcoming 1-3 collection. Aaaaand I somehow managed to find DQ VIII for 3DS brand new for super cheap, so I’m basically all in. 🤣
Dragon quest 9 gets hilariously easy when you learn how to break the game. For example: 4 sword users all using falcon slash + falcon sword. You have a 4 person attack chain of party members using an attack that hits the enemy 4 times. It gets hilariously more broken when you use attack boost buffs. I made that game my bitch when I was a kid.
Funny that I ordered DQ5 out of curiosity for the DS years ago, and the learn it is one of the most regarded in the series. I will definitively give it another chance.
I've been recently trying to figure out which Dragon Quest to play. I only have an Xbox, or a 2DS (with the ability to play original DS games). Looking up what to play, I see most people say 5, 8, or 9 are the go-to games to play. 5 being the best story usually, and 9 having the most content. But I've also heard people say that 9 is heavily based around multiplayer, which isn't a thing nowadays. I've seen some people claim 8 is one of the best DQ games in general. So, I still dunno what to play. At best I've narrowed it down to three games. Might just give 8 a shot first since it'll be the nicest looking one on 3DS. Then hop back to 5, followed by 9.
Great retrospective, thank you guys for this. It was quite nostalgic seeing all these games, but I have to say even to this day DQ VIII remains my favorite one. It was literally the game that made me interested in JRPGs, which I usually tried to avoid up until that point.
DQV was the first RPG I remember playing in any significance...ever. From there, I developed an interest in RPGs, found out what a good other RPG was on the market, and landed on Final Fantasy USA III (VI). To this day, I would say it is my all time favorite in terms of at-the-time enjoyment and was really the first RPG I bought, and played from beginning to end. At the time I didn't have a lot of money or games and I'm so so glad it ended up being that one. I also was lucky enough to have a copy of DQVI shipped to me shortly after release and loved that game as well, though I couldn't fully read Japanese, I could read enough to get by...barely. I'd say retrospectively, I am very impressed with the full 3D world and vast world map of DQ8. I'll hold my judgement as I have yet to play 11, but the zoning put me off as I loved the open world of 8. I also enjoyed the super famicom remake of 3. I have never played 7, 9, 10, or 11 but generally don't have much interest, save for 11 which I would like to play. Also interestingly, I've played every single Dragon Quest up till now in Japanese, but for some reason, seek to play 11 in English!? Not sure why the change of heart...but with my limited Japanese reading ability, I never truly followed all of the little details of the story and maybe older me is now interested in those details? I love some of the FF series, but I also love DQ! Fun fact that I'm sure many of you know - Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest were, at least in the early days, 2 of the biggest RPG series in Japan. Final Fantasy was by Squaresoft, and Dragon Quest was by Enix. At some point I forget, the companies merged (I believe Square swallowed Enix) and they renamed to how they are known now - Square Enix.
Great video with useful information! FYI since not many people may know this but the DQ9 wifi shop w/ downloadable dungeons and quests finally has a workaround thanks to the community! Used this workaround myself so I can confirm it works
I love the DQ series, got hooked as a kid from the first one Nintendo gave out for free. I especially love DQ Builders, those games were really fun and had great callbacks to / retellings of some of the old stories. Also Rocket Slime on the DS! Loved that too, wish we'd gotten the sequel in the West :(
I just ordered dragon quest 8 for my 3ds can’t wait I love the fact it’s got full in voice story not even fire emblem has that. I’ll play with my headphones on.
My favorites versions of the DQ games I love playing I - Mobile II - GBC III - SNES IV - DS, Mobile V - PS2 VI - DS, Mobile VII - 3DS VIII - PS2 IX - DS
DQIX was my first "real" DQ- game (only played DQ Builders before). Took me quite some time to get a copy. Searched for years until I finally was able to get a used one during a Holiday trip in Munich (bought it together with a copy of DQVI). Played it and liked it almost instantly. After returning home, I found out that a friend of mine also liked that game very much. Just awesome! :-D In my opinion, DQIX might be the best title of the series (or at least close to the top). :-D
@@nikkictu2049 Yes, totally serious!! Didn't believe it myself at first, just google yourself: "Dragon quest 9 remake". There are *several* articles of online gaming magazines dated from the 12.07.2019 (and later) that mention that the creators still didn't start development or anything, but (like I already said) they are thinking about a remake. Also the main platform can be expected to be the Nintendo Switch (which is fine by me as I own one, but I would appreciate ports to other platforms as well). That means, we still would have to wait a handful of years if they decide to start production soon, but still this makes me very excited!! :D
I wish we got the 3ds version of DQ XI on the 3ds in the west. I think they also got the first 3 on 3ds in Japan as well, so they can play every game on the 3ds.
Dragon Quest 4 was the first game in the series I played, but I never finished it. I remember getting to the 5th chapter and getting stuck as a kid. I do remember loving that you play as different characters in each chapter, but I also remember hating that once you got to chapter 5, the big guy who runs a shop (if I remember correctly) becomes useless as he just loafs around in battle. The first one in the series I've finished was the first game just today on Switch. I haven't really played many other mainline entries in the series despite now owning all of them except I think 5 and 6.
Yesterday I finished Dragon Quest 11 S as my very first Dragon Quest game. I'm taking a bit off before I start the Tickington quests, and once I'm done, I'm gonna decide which game to play next.
Having played Dragon Quest X myself, I can say it's not nearly as much a departure from the series' roots as one might expect. Yeah it's a little different, of course, but it feels closer to a typical Dragon Quest game than DQ9.
Hey, the content of the video is great! Love the series and you explained everything really well. But if I may, I wanted to give you two advices. One is that the music is too loud compared to your speech. It’s nice to hear the music, but I think it was clashing with your voice. The other is that it would be nice to see footage from more version. Like when you were taking about the 3DS version of VIII and VII. But it’s only small things. Otherwise great video!
Thanks for the feedback! I wanted to give the music a chance to shine as well given how awesome it is. In terms of the other versions, we just didn't have access to footage for all of them this time, but we'll definitely aim for that in the future!
For me, Madchen (daughter) stayed in the wagon for most of DQV. She only came out when my main party wiped. Madison (son) was one of my mains, though, along with Sancho, Bianca, and The Hero.
I wish they'd show the NES version of 3. Graphically, it's really impressive for an NES game. Additionally, on a personal level, I really do not like the localization of the GBC games.
I certainly thought about using the NES version of DW3 for the video, but I wanted to show a variety of consoles throughout the video, so I went with the GBC version. Thanks for the feedback!
One question I have is where the monsters in each game come from? Are they the spawn of the demonic forces that rebelled against the ruling deity of the world? Are they capable of free will?, etc.
For some reason i just cannot into 9, started with 8 then 11 which i both enjoyed immensely and i just blazed through 1,2,3 recently. Went back to try again after originally trying it at launch and i just....cant get into it.
Was realms or reverie called realms of revelation in the US? It's weird how they change names for the states. I always thought changing HP and the Philosopher's stone to HP and the sorcerer's stone was stupid 😂
Yes. And if I understand correctly, the mobile port goes by "Realms of Revelation" in all English speaking territories, not just the US. Sad, as I always preferred "Reverie".
9 was the cleanest in the series. I remember making up stories on how me and my friends characters would meet up end be in a party. We used to compare who had the most impact in battles and etc. they need to bring it back or just make a new one for ps5 or something
Heard about DQ when VIII came out. I thought the Voice Acting was great, along with the difference between day and night. Sometimes I would stop playing just to watch some of the fantastic Sunsets, or to watch the Moon move slowly through the sky. I would play it with different builds, the best one was a 'No Weapons'' using only hand or magic attacks.
I've been looking for Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games on the DS/3DS to play. It sucks that there's like, 3 entire main Dragon Quest entries on DS/3DS that were never released in english. As for Final Fantasy, the only main-line games on the DS/3DS were remakes of 3 and 4. No original main-line games, at all. And not much at ALL on the 3DS. I love JRPGs in general. But at the same time, I haven't played a ton of 'em. I've never really touched Final Fantasy 1-6 (otherwise known as the 2D FF games). I played 7 and 8, but not 9. I played FFX, but not X-2. I played 12, owned by never really played 13, haven't touched 14, and played 15. As for Dragon Quest, I haven't touched any of them outside of the more recent XI on Xbox, and even then I only played that for like 2-3 hours. I really like 'em, but at the same time, I have a hard time finding one that clicks with me, ya know? It's hard for me to trudge through a grindy RPG if I don't really get into it. If it hooks me though, I'll sit and play for ages. Then again, I'm also limited to Xbox, DS, 3DS, or Game Boy and Game Boy Advance. Anything on any other console, I can't play.
I like to consider DQ3 and 4 as 2 games in 1: one for the male protagonist, and the other for the female. The differences are minimal, sure, but given the fact the choice is goven at the beginning it's cool you can choose the version of the game you prefer to play.
"Dragon Quest 2: Luminaries of the Legendary Line was released on the famicom..." Yeah, you all didnt played these games, or even bother to research a little of what are you talking about. Dragon Quest 2 was called DQ2: Pantheon of the Evil Spirits in its original japanese name, what you said it was its Mobile /Switch name on the west.
My top 5 games of the series: 5. Dragon Quest VII 4. Dragon Quest IV 3. Dragon Quest XI 2. Dragon Quest V 1. Dragon Quest VIII While I would highly recommend this series to anyone who likes RPGs, I would especially say DQV and DQVIII are must-plays. The others are great as well, but there's just something really special about those two entries that make them special. DQXI almost managed to reach their level, but the disappointing last third of the story dragged it down for me.
I completely agree with you! It's probably still my favourite, even though DQXI is close. We just weren't able to collect any footage of that version for the video.
The main reason I bought a PS2 was DQ 8, the main reason I bought a PS1 was DQ7, the main reason I bought a NDS was DQ9 and of course the main reason I bought a 3DS was DQ7 remake ,
Shout-out to my boy Valis77 He was always a criminally under-rated Let's Player. The controversy was bullshit. Miss you Promise, he was always supportive of my old channel where I made really bad let's plays for fun.
@@jinkisaragi874 DS graphics sucks imo... it's like 240p? or even lower...3ds is 240p... those graphics are just terrible. We need remastered editions at 720p at least
Dhalmagus was not the court jester. After learning of the staff of Trodain (Godbird Sceptre) He set out to play as a magician in Trodain. After a performance infront of king Trode he was given a stay at the castle for the night, so he took that advantage to steal the sceptre. Little did he know the sceptre is cursed and the rest is told in more backstory Point is Dholmagus was Rylus's apprentice
He at least dressed as a jester. I checked a few sources while writing that part: dragon-quest.org/wiki/Dhoulmagus and villains.fandom.com/wiki/Dhoulmagus
When I was a kid my grandma gave me $10 on my birthday. At that time I had only played super Mario bros and I wanted a new video game so I went to a game store and had a choice between Dragon Warrior and the adventures of Bayou Billy , I picked Dragon warrior and have been a fan every since.
I purchased Dragon Quest IX in 2010 when on holiday in France as a 10 year old, only having seen it in the official UK Nintendo magazine and never having played any other DQ title. I saw it as a fun looking game, and it being a turn based RPG like Pokemon (I was a Pokemon mega fan) really appealed to me. I proceeded to play it on and off with the same save for several months and the difficulty was probably what also got me as I struggled to beat one of the bosses and wasn’t knowledgable enough to think of grinding or strategies to prepare (In Pokemon diamond I first beat Cynthia with a lvl 100 torterra and lvl 30 team haha). After a while off, I committed myself later in the year and accidentally grinded my teams levels up whilst looking for cool items for them to wear, which gave me hope as I beat that boss and made my way through the game and beat the final bosses. DQIX is still probably my favourite ever DQ game to date because of the extreme nostalgia it brings me now as a 20 year old Uni student. I’m about to make the leap back to DQ with DQ 11S this weekend when I buy a switch and the title and I cant wait. This game combines the DQ I know and love with very palatable graphics and sound, stunning visuals and a new story (for me). I fear this may cause me to get behind on my uni work, but I’m sure it is a worthy cause! (Sorry for rambling, hope someone finds joy in my story haha.
Also for the record I did not once use cheats until a few years ago when I wanted to replay the game for its story but didn’t want to have the issue of grinding and/or dying and being reset as an issue. My first run through as a pre-teen was fully off my own back, without even consulting a guide for what to do next. Yes it took me >250 hours to complete the game haha
I loved reading this story, and thanks for sharing it! I think so many of us have these stories, too, especially connected to lengthy RPGs from our childhood!
