"You are close now... So very close to me." "Come, Arisen. I shall meet you on your own terms, joined by my own compaion of old. You stand now at its end, Arisen. See your journey through!"
Old comment, I know, but if you fight the Seneschal while Online, then it should actually be the Arisen & Main Pawn of the person on your friends list who most recently defeated the Seneschal that you have to fight (provided it's your second time facing the Seneschal, since the first time you fight the Seneschal it's *always* a fight against Savan & Salde), which *can* still mean that you fight your previous character & Pawn if nobody on your friends list has beaten the Seneschal before you fight them on a second run through.
@@gamester512 That did happen after a few months into the game when my friends got a copy for themselves. They were just as surprised as I was. At the time I experienced it nobody on my friends list had the game when it came out so that's why I saw my previous self.
@@StubbornCapy In my case, I had a friend I was playing this with simultaneously (and the way we became friends is actually a bit of a funny story in it's own right!), and I wound up progressing further than him at a slightly faster pace. I even reached and defeated Daimon before him (we were having a bit of a friendly/casual "race" to see which of us could complete Dark Arisen first, which ultimately wound up being my win by about 20 minutes, I believe he mostly got hung up with the Dark Bishop and actually had to retry the fight, while in my case I won first try even though I lost 2 Pawns to petrification), and IIRC the second time he defeated the Seneschal, it was *my* character and Pawn that he was facing instead of his own. As for how the two of us first met, it was initiated by me getting a friend request from him through Dragon's Dogma, and at the time I would almost invariably accept such friend requests. And not long after I'd accepted his request I get a message from him inviting me to a voice chat, and it was during that voice chat that he explained to me that he'd stepped away from the game momentarily while browsing through Pawns, and at the time he'd been looking at my Pawn, and while he was away from his controller his toddler son got his hands on the controller and wound up sending that friend request instead of him! We both got a good laugh out of that! XD
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh my goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood! thats truly epic but do you know you can fight the chosen knigt? that combines exactly the abilities and aura.
This being a Japanese game, fighting God is almost expected. Becoming God, however, and facing yourself if you later challenge God again. Now that was unexpected.
The true ending to this game perfectly encapsulates why it is important not to use walkthroughs or message boards before experiencing the whole game. Knowing the true ending before experiencing it in this game would steal a bit of the magic of this grand moment. And to those of us who were fortunate enough to beat it twice before venturing online... I think I can say with some confidence that this game won't disappear from our minds anytime soon. I tip my hat to you fellow arisen.
A whole decade later, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is announced. And I agree, not looking things up made the time I spent in this game so much more memorable. And I intent to play the sequel the same way.
"You are close now. So very close to me." Means more than what it appears. Not only did you physically move toward the Seneshal but you also took yet another step toward being him. Words both as a taunt, to challenge your will and to hint at what your fight means.
fishfag come arisen, i shall meet you in your own terms, joined by my old companion of old, you stand now at its end arisen, see your Journey through...
Same with having a good final boss. I spoiled myself on the final boss due to hearing how story wasn't good and I'm disappointed 2's final boss is nowhere near a modicum of good as the Seneschal.
This song hit me hard on my second playthrough, mostly because i stopped for a few months and came back to play it offline cuz i didnt have internet. And to my suprise my old character was staring me in the face, still there as if watching the world for me when i left. Then came a hard choice since it was me i had to kill, the choice is obvious, kill him and take your place as the schenesal but still, to know that i let my old character keep watch and not notice, brings me shame for not noticing sooner.
VinylPonScratch it doesn't matter how many times I play this game. The final boss will always be as heartbreaking when I fight my previous character. I feel you so much! T^T
@@ezrealsegirlsimp437 Well, Seneschal kinda wants to be free of his duty, doesn't he? Free of the whole eternal chain? Your new character is allowing your old one to finally rest. At least, that's how I've always seen it.
I always went offline for the final boss. It felt much closer to the theme of cycles that the game has when you fought your previous character. Plus I once ended up fighting this capped level guy as a NG Hard mode character and he destroyed me in one hit. THAT fight took a loooong time.
I played this game for the first time when I was in middle school. It absolutely blew me away. I didn't use the computer very often back then so nothing got spoiled. To put it simply, this game came to me at exactly the right time. I actually brought it over to a friends house. I spent most of my time there. I couldn't come over on the weekends and I got to the Seneschal fight on a Friday. We were both so invested and so stupid that we left the damn tv on for the whole weekend so that we could just unpause when I came back. Everything about this game changed the way I see games. This and Demon's Souls defined to me what a game can be, moreover, what a game should be. Seven years later, I still come back to it just to feel like a kid again and embark on the adventure once more. I desperately hope that Itsuno makes a proper sequel so that another kid can have what I had with this game.
@@OwlsNeck I am cautiously optimistic. Just because I'm getting what I asked for doesn't mean I'm getting what I wanted. If Itsuno delivers; and it is a good follow-up that I view with cynical, adult eyes, I will be very grateful to him and his team.
Thinking of how much bigger and greater in scale Dragon's Dogma was supposed to be before all the cuts makes me incredibly sad. The game released with maybe 20% of all the content that was originally planned for it. It's such a damned shame.
@@Jose_Doe the entire megaten franchise, the entire final fantasy franchise, and the entire fire emblem franchise all come to mind. Not to mention xenoblade, dark souls, and despite not being JRPG's, even every elder scrolls game has you kill and become gods.
fight gods its realy epic! but god arisens?that its just craziness and an realy epic battle beccause you need to fight the chosen one of your old game that is just crazy and epic!
To be fair you quite litterly go against the greater will, something even the senechal couldn't do as he was cursed by the pathfinder, you shatter the cycle as the dragon was trying lead an arisen to do, I think thats pretty fuckin baller.
@pacifierragae7647 to be "FAIR" the first game has no narrative or story connection whatsoever to the second. Hense why the "senescahl" is not mentioned or even hinted at. Because the first and second game are retellings of the same story the true end of the first game in which you kill yourself with the blade does end the cycle. And the second game is a retelling of the same story just done poorly
@pacifierragae7647 oh yeah and i dont know what the hell your source is but the seneshcal wasn't cursed by the pathfinder. Dont know where you saw that garbage.
@@sirpurple4464 It's not exactly a retelling, and it is quite connected to the first game, although poorly. DD2 takes place in the DD1 world scenario of the seneschal abandoning his post, forcing the cycle to adapt and create a new one with the pathfinder/brine as the overseer and literally forcing the same roles and lives on everyone for some sort of universal stability. The liondude in the chair that gives you the godsbane was an arisen that made it as duke and expanded his dominion with Gran Soren as his capital and funded Vermund, when he found out about the pathfinder forcing his role as monarch and his victories being a hollow achievement he went insane and started killing NPCs until the pathfinder chose a different guy as arisen to tie liondude to that chair and sunk Gran Soren in the ocean. Does it follow the same narrative structure? Yeah, but it's a different story altogether. The problem, in my opinion is that it is a worse story and it quite obviously requires you to have a prior understanding of the setting to make sense of what's happening. The first game had you run after the dragon for the sole purpose of stopping his rampage and get your heart back, the test of the seneschal and the true purpose of the dragon are only revealed later, in this one you are obviously put in a place of cosmological importance to fulfill your vaguely descripted "destiny" for the Pathfinder's narrative. Not to mention that the characters in DD2 are incredibly poor and serve no purpose beyond sending you to the next quest, in DD1 characters weren't the best, but they had a narrative purpose and their own arcs that could culminate in a romantic relationship... in DD2 you get a cinematic of your most liked NPC looking at the sea.
Since this game was launched i could not stop playing it, it is just too perfect to me, i must have finished it hundreds of times by now, somehow the adventure feeling is always there and when i start to play it just flourish and its just like playing for the first time.
Capcom needs to release the sequel, it’d be silly for them not to. All they have to do is look at Witcher series. The first one garnered a small but cult audience, then Projekt stuck with it and look where they are now. Dragons dogma if given the Witcher 3 treatment9 it has potential to become a huge mainstream success.
Did you know there was an MMO was released in Japan? It was basically just DD but Online. Bad news is that when I finally heard about this, it was because they shut down online services.
Witcher 3 Story levels with DD characters and the supreme combat of DDDA would be the best thing ever. hopefully DD2 does this with the sequel. and ofc a larger open world. and maybe a new or returning BBI type endgame dungeon. Masterworks all, you cant go wrong.
The implication is there that there might be more than one Seneschal, but I agree with what your saying about Godsbane, I don't think it actually kills you so much as it bestows your will upon your Pawn (granting them humanity) and then restarts the cycle so that someday another Arisen might replace you.
You are close, now... so very close to me! Come, Arisen. I shall meet you on your own terms. Joined by my own company of old. You stand now at its end, Arisen. See your journey through. Yes stoke the flames of your will to survive. To be victorious! Temper your soul in its heat! The forge of my heart grows cold. And the world shivers for it. Know this, Arisen. The world is merciless... cold and empty. For all its beauty. It is an ever-turning wheel. Perfect beyond compare. I stand at its centre. As you may come to stand in turn. It is my will that keeps it spinning. My will that urges time onward through eternity. Our kind must fight. And through fighting prove the temper of our will. It is a fight that knows no end... It repeats upon itself. That all the world my repeat with it. And so the cycle continues. Forever and ever and ever...
It's a shame the fight against the Seneschal is probably the easiest fight in the game because it lasts so short when it should last a lot longer.

this boss should mimick entirely the Arisen's equipment and skills, it would've been hella cool. only balancing in case of huge level gap between you and seneschal
You saw it awaiting you at the end of your descent. Aye, the same place you arrived from this place. A world you may now inherit. ....tis is a simple proposition no different than any you've faced. You only need the will to claim that is offered you. The will to survive! Yes, fight, Arisen, as you ere have fought in coming here! Consider... the infinite potential...just as You call forth pawns, So I command all life into existence. Call it divine creation if you must, But except none of Mercy men seek in their Gods. This is cold truth, the unbending reality of a world without compassion. The world and all its denizens are but empty vessels, in that regard for different than pawns. Without volition..... there is no true life. the world falls stagnant, dead as a ocean with no current to guide it. That volition is tempered by the struggle for survival. The decision, just like yours, to fight. Just as the pawns need a master's command, so the world thirsts for the will to live. Let us continue Arisen, show that you are more than a empty vessel animated by forces unseen. Show that the temper of your soul is strong enough to command far more than mere pawns... Show that your will is fit to bind the fraying circle of this world and hold it fast. Fight tooth and claw. struggle now, and cling to life! Show that living is worth enough to fight for! It's time to decide, Will you claim your right as Arisen? Or shrug the burden and seek peace in oblivion? Just so. One foot after the next, come what may. That's what it means to live. Turn back now and I will give you a merciful death. The choice is yours Arisen, Yours alone... Tis a simple choice Arisen step forward or retreat. Accept the quiet emptiness of a false peace. Of false life. You are close now...so very close me! Come Arisen ... I shall meet you on my own terms Joined by my companion of old, You stand now at its end, Arisen. See your journey through. Yes! Stoke the flames or your will to survive! To be victorious! Temper you soul in its heat! The Forge of my heart grows cold. And the world shivers for it. I know this, Arisen. The world is merciless... cold and empty for its beauty. It's a ever-turning wheel. Perfect beyond compare. I stand at its centre. As you may come to stand in turn. It repeats upon itself. That all the world my repeat with it. And so the cycle continues. Forever and ever and ever... Arisen... forgive me, all I've done was to tell your will. It is the fate of all Arisen, you and I are swept my in the current, same as the rest. Each tempers the volition of the next. And the endless cycle continues. And so until the coming of a new soul fit to craft the will to live. Someone like you... Until that day, may you guide the world ever justly
I present you with the godsbane blade. Those who arise to oversee this world are undying. Save by this brands kiss. I ask that you, as the new world's seneschal. Use it now to vouchsafe freedom from your weary servant... Mourn me not, for I welcome the release, at last I am free..free from eternity of infinity free from the cruel unending ring....
THIS GAME IS AWESOME too bad this epic battle with an incredibly epic theme lasted literally like 5-10 seconds to me, I feel like battling Savan should have been WAY harder
The ending to Dragon's Dogma was a cruel beauty of an ending, and it fairly fit the template character of my Arisen - someone who would sacrifice herself for others if it meant saving lives. Definitely buying the Dark Arisen version of the game, it doesn't bother me that I'll be buying the full game again, the game is simply an excellent game and worth every penny spent and every second played. I hope a sequel will be as good.
The true ending to this game hit me hard ,for three days I couldn't speak, I didn't now how to process it, no game book or any other has ever done that some have made me think about them a lot but none have hit me int he same way.
"Come Arisen! I shall meet you on your own terms, joined by my own companion of old. You stand now at it's end Arisen See your Journey through!" love this the battle evven though it was pretty easy. (though slightly hard since I had a Sorcerer as a teammate
The ending completelly blew my mind. Gotta love those japanese and they're way of stimulating our brain find sense on things, and not just give the information in black and white, like so many western tales
i think the seneschal rules all the worlds, but stabbing yourself shows that you are ready to be replaced and sends the dragon into a world to find a new arisen and test them, of course, death by the seneschal brings in a new dragon from the soul of the near successful but any other time and the seneschal must wait before he can create any that may be worthy to succeed him/her
One of the best final bosses ever. It wasn't extremely hard but the music and the fact that you was fighting god just is what made this fight awesome. (I may of gotten that wrong. He is god right?)
You're not fighting god himself, Savan is not the only seneschal but well, a lot of things are still... misty and I hope the next game will explain the rest
and I also think that as your pawn's soul is given to your body and returned to the earth (the transgression of soul), you then also become your pawn that is fought alongside you when a new arisen challenges you
Really wish this boss wasn't so... weak. Maybe the point was to have it weak so you could focus on what he was saying, but geez did it feel bad to hit him twice and just spend the rest of the fight walking circles around him.
"You are close, now... So very close to me! Come, Arisen. I shall meet you on your owns terms, joined by my own companion of old. You stand now at its end, Arisen. See your journey through! Free of the cruel, unending ring!" *Quest Log Updated!* _The Great Hereafter_ _Live as the Seneschal_
It would've been cool if the seneschal had a final form. Wouldn't it be awesome watching your former Arisen turn into a big angel themed beast that varied by the class he was and bear the heartache of having to cut him down yourself?!
0:59 to 1:14 is the same melody as 0:16 to 0:30 of Star of Heaven, which uses the same passage "Land and sky and seas yearn, finish the cycle of eternal return" that appears throughout the DD soundtrack.
I think it's just symbolic with the whole "Savan pulling the sword out of chest". Just like you said, if that's what happened, it wouldn't fit at the end with your pawn, and there was nothing indicating the "spirit becoming Seneschal either. I thought the Epilogue text was pretty clear, how your consciousness slowly fades to black as you smile, feeling a strange pride as you put finally put your journey to an end, as well as allowing someone else to "live" (your pawn). That's my thoughts on it
especially thinking that he that made it possible for you to be a god (grigori) gave you the only thing that can kill a god (godsbane) saying it will show you the truth of the world, the truth being all things die
I gotta say, when u beat the game for the second time it was a fucking mindblow for me hahaha such fantastic touch to add ur previous character as the seneshal Ps: and its a loophole, the more times u beat the game the senehsal will be changed to the last mc u create
First ending i was full gear and high lvl already and it was a mistake 😂 but the feeling i got from fighting my old magic knight was epic af. Specially when that music kick in
Man i remember when i first fought the Seneschal, i was surprised that he was Savan (the dude from the tutorial). Then when i fought the Seneschal again for the second time i was like "HOLY SHIT THATS MY OLD CHARACTER" lmao good times.
after the bestowal of spirit the pawn only gains a soul, its body still does not age selene was the pawn of what is most likely the seneschal that savan fought and she still looks young
I'm glad I was able to enjoy this game and didn't just dismiss it as some old boring game with wonky controls. The second playthrough and final boss was extremely memorable. Easily one of my favorite games now.
maybe your right, im just interpreting, its just that selene has a soul and is human but was once a pawn and my guess is that she is the pawn of the seneschal that savan fought, making her very old
