Think of it like two alternate dimensions: 1 where it's only the main series, and then another one with both the main series AND the movies. The main series is canon in both of them, but the movies are only canon in one of them.
Yeah, in the Ocean dub, there was this somewhat confusing line about Vegeta saying Goku's dad was "an average fighter, but a brilliant scientist", then in the Ocean dub of the Bardock special, they make a point of what a skilled fighter, but lousy scientist Bardock is. Even if Bardock is the one who created the artificial moon technique, that was a weird way for Vegeta to describe him. Either way, it was just an obscure little joke/reference TFS put in there (:

that probably wasn't a fuckup. basically,goku's prallel with superman was pretty much apparent for an american audience,so they changed the script to make his father a scientist..just like superman's father,to add another similiarity
My theory is that he exploded because his power while massive was equally volatile so when Goku pierced Broly with that punch it was enough to cause all the energy in Broly to go off like a Ki-powered bomb.
Dbza has a lot of subtle callbacks people miss for hardcore fans like how the 1ups freeza got from kuruin made him survive death blows vs goku later on and like douchebag being the catchphrase of the dead zone henchmen as a reference to some of the tfs crew previously abridging the first 3 films pre tfs before kaiser or taka were involved when the character name was douchebag for that henchman in dead zone abridged back in 2007... aka when it was just a collab between lanipator masakox and vegeta3986 on the channel itouchedyusuke aka formerly neighborhood cluck productions plus cameos from a few lesser members like hbi2k and littlekuriboh send actual voice actors from the dub including Chris Sabat Kyle Hebert and Chuck Huber...they did callbacks a lot...there's another one I forgot that's very subtle that most people miss later on from an earlier episode they referenced years later
Eric's face when Broly first spoke was priceless. Also, I'm so happy you guys picked up on the whole Bardock being a scientist thing. No other reactors that I've seen have even acknowledged it. Lanipator has referenced that dub line a lot in their videos and streams, particularly their Xenoverse videos, but it even came up just yesterday in their Pokemon Moon stream. One thing that would have been a nice nod, though, would have been a reference to how Pilaf should be a baby at this point in time when Goku's going around interrogating all of his past villains.
k9commander Basically, Pilaf was shown in Super to not know that Shenron can grant more than one wish, meaning that they made the wish to become young (babies actually) before Kami fused back with Piccolo. There's also the fact that Mai is young in both timelines, meaning that it had to have been made at a point where the events could have played out in both timelines, prior to Piccolo fusing with Kami in the present timeline and prior to Piccolo being killed by the Androids when they show up in the Future timeline. The wish was most likely made at some point during the three years they were training for the Androids.
Just incase anyone was wondering the joke between north and south kai about the 'other world tournament' The joke is that the other world tournament is between deceased fighters and since the south galaxy was destroyed south kai will have more choices for fighters.

I know this is rather late, but I did finally get around to rewatching the original film in Japanese with English subs. And I think Broly’s issue with Goku is more subtle. Since it looks like it was the same day Goku cried next to him as it was getting stabbed, I think Broly’s insane mind associated Goku’s very presence with that trauma. And that’s what it is that sets him off and makes him hate him
In the otherworld tournaments, the Kais choose dead warriors to fight. When North Kai says South Kai "has more options" now, he is referencing the fact that, since South Galaxy was destroyed, every single person there is now dead, including the warriors. And, more dead warriors means more options for the tournament. And that's fucked up.
the Bardock/scientist problem isn't a mistranslation issue, it was deliberate. The people who brought it over from Japan worried that Gokus character wouldn't go over well. So in an attempt to make Goku likable in the US, they tried turning him into Superman. Making Bardock Jor-el, a genius scientist. This is almost as confusing an edit in the show as when they censored out Gohans thought bubble of an apple tree. America fucks it all up.

I definitely agree, although the original Broly transformation scene was badass. TFS did sort of gloss over it, but then again it is hard to top a roided out saiyan hulking out to 10's by Pantera.
It was the Ocean Dub that called Bardock a scientist, which they only did to draw a connection between Goku and Superman. Also, the other slaver "abusing" the Shamoshans with Dah-Di is Mah-Stehr.
Keva the Half-Kestora it was Funimation in collaboration with Ocean and Saban that did the early versions of the DBZ dub and thus added that Bardock is a scientist stuff.
Eitherway Im pretty sure the Mini Manga series of Dragon Ball Minus was made the canon of Bardock not the Specials. That being said Bardock really was a scientist and Goku's mother is Gine.

Broly is not the ''Legendary SSJ''. Toriyama had nothing to do with Broly. This isn't his idea, thus it isn't canon to the story of DB. Broly's story was created by Toei animation. Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, Trunks etc. all are the legendary SSJ. Vegeta was referencing the SSJ transformation during the Namek arc and Goku achieved it when Krillin died. That's the legendary SSJ form. SSJ1. The legend was that once in a millennium a SSJ appears. Goku fulfilled that legend. Broly is just a ''side'' story. Nothing more.

The powergap between king vageta and baby broly was still pretty high. even in friezas weakest form his power level was over a million or some shit, so king vageta should have easily been around 40,000, based on the fact that bardock survived dodorias attack.
571danu Pretty sure bardock was the strongest sayain at that point. King Vegeta wouldn't be getting any zenkai boosts while sitting in his throne. Freeza didn't have any indication that he considered King Vegeta a threat. And since Prince vegeta was only slightly above baby brolys power when he first fought goku, it seems unlikely that King vegeta would be that much stronger, especially when vegeta had basically stagnated at that power over several year based on how freiza men treated him on namek.

I always thought that Goku could have just popped back to Earth grabbed Mr Perfect Cell and brought him to fight Broly. Thus they would have gotten rid of both Broly and Mr Perfect Cell.
Cell is much stronger than Broly because Cell actually can breathe in space and it actually took a super saiyan 2 transformation and it only took Goku with some power up from his friends (not son why would i include him he doesnt have one)

I could be completely wrong, but I think it is referring to that the South Kai has more options now since he can pick participants from North, East & West galaxies since South Galaxy is destroyed.
SaintLiam3000 King Kai was saying that South Kai has a larger pool of fighters to pick from for the Other World Tournament since everyone in his galaxy is now dead after Broly destroyed it.
LibraOGS Actually, its because Goku is a trigger. Getting stabbed by Vegeta and almost dying gave him PTSD and Goku brings up all of those memories and throws him into a panic attack. Of course, real panic attacks dont usually cause you to go on a rampage, but it makes sense.

The motivation Broly has is that he was psycologically scarred after Goku kept crying he was stabbed and thrown in a dumpster wich forced him to release his powers as a newborn baby wich probably fucked him up for the rest of his life and ofc Goku is like a Trigger too all of that.
Broly technically isn't the original prophesized Super Saiyan. If this was canon and you only take this movie into account he is, but lore that came up after this changed that.
Actually Broly isn't the legendary super saiyan Vegeta talked about. The one he talked about lived 1,000 years ago. It was prophesised that there would be another. Thats why Vegeta thought Goku was the prophesised saiyan when he transformed on Namek, this movie kinda plays with the idea that Broly was the next legendary saiyan , not Goku. The "legendary Super Saiyan" is different from the "Legendary Super Saiyan". The legendary Super Saiyan was basically the next Super Saiyan in a thousand years. It's a form any Saiyan can achieve if they get strong enough, Goku was just the first in a long time, meaning the Super Saiyan form used to be common but eventually fell into disuse which caused it to be seen as a legend or myth. The Legendary Super Saiyan is different, it is a rare genetic mutation where the Saiyan is born extremely powerful and has totally different SS forms, specifically LSS, the huge green haired form. So in a way "Legendary" is more of a classification, "Legendary-type or Legendary-class Super Saiyan" while the "legendary" is the normal Super Saiyan form which became a myth.
Spoilers: Broly isn't the legendary super saiyan, Bardock is. If you remember the Bardock special, he turned super saiyan when he went back in time. It was this transformation that put the fear of super saiyans into Freeza's family. Though after so many years had gone by, Freeza only thought of it as a myth--or rather, a LEGEND.
Not sure if it's been mentioned or not, but there was a scene where Broly says "Broly is not a monster. Broly is... uh..." and the others chime in with "A demon" and "A true freak" and Broly then responds "The devil." This was a jab at the different dubbed versions giving Broly different lines of what he calls himself.
In the context of this movie he was, just beacause the movies not cannon to the main series it doesn't make the movie non-cannon to itself. Though acording to Xenoverse 2 the first two broly movies and fusion reborn are actually cannon. No idea HOW they're cannon though.
Bryzantine It really isn't. I've seen plenty worse. Super's bizaare retcons... some really weird stuff in GT back when that was considered cannon. Really Xenoverse fixed most of that by explaining how time travel was to blaim for most of it. And how GT was created because of future trunks' shenanigans in the android arc.
Just to make things clear to some fans, BROLY IS NOT CANON. HE IS NON EXISTENT IN DRAGON BALL MANGA. The Legendary Super Saiyan that Vegeta was talking about WAS NOT BROLY. Just don't want anybody confused. P.S. The Scientist reference to Bardock is a nod to the mistranslation in dub. They're just joking.

Two small things: The Other World Tournament at the end is that the 4 cardinal Kais get together for a huge tournament where warriors that have died are scouted by the Kais to fight and choose the best dead fighter in all the galaxies, basically. So when North Kai said “now you have a lot more options”, it makes sense that South goes “that’s fxxked up, man”. And second, Goku back in OG DragonBall thought a marriage was just a huge banquet filled with food, so he agreed to marry a young Chi-Chi when he also was like 8 years old. So when Chi-Chi at the end says she wants a divorce and Goku says “me too, I’m starving”, it’s him thinking a divorce is another kind of huge banquet. I think you guys mentioned everything else like Bardock. It’s always fun to watch you guys react to these things!
