This is exactly what I want. I'm that guy that refused to fast travel, in Skyrim.

You can also refuse fast travel if it were available in this game.

I almost never use fast travel in games even when they have them, unless the distance between point A and point B is astronomically big.. As I prefer to travel there myself especially if there are mounts available.

My thing is. Is out of combat stamina gonna be an issue since we’re going to have to walk everywhere. Also, when doing a quest I don’t wanna have to fight every min when walking from town to town when I’m trying to finish a quest.

I hate to admit the lack of fast travel turned me off from the original Dragon's Dogma. I was so used to it in other games and thought it was backwards for not implementing it the same as other open world games. But i understand now its a different type of game and that exploration is part of the gameplay loop for this series. I'm willing to give Dragon's Dogma 2 a try.

I think it's fine if some have that opinion at first, until it clicks and then you start understanding why that is. I think the size of dd1 map is big just because of it and tbh I will always take a map like that with stuff to do than having empty space that serves nothing. Although I think i. dd2 intro will most likely be streamlined better so it eases people into that gameplay style.

I get that. You get the Port Crystal item a few hours in, which allows you to place it wherever you want, top of a mountain, outside a cave, and zip back to town to stock up and whizz back to continue searching that area. You find 10 I think, allowing 10 custom and about 7 pre-set areas to zip to. The whole game changes when you get this item. Took me 10 years to finally play it for similar reasons. Very glad I did.

You also know damn well that most open world games are garbage because they are designed around fast travel. DD goes back to the Morrowind days.

I think this entire thing comes down to a misunderstanding just like in your case. Games like these which offer limited fast travel don't intend to punish the player or waste their time at all. It's the idea to go on a journey, plan for it, gear up and all that. Kinda like Lord of the rings when Frodo and the fellowship travel far through middle earth. Teleporting around would kinda defeat that. The devs should have made this way more clear from the beginning I think. There's a smaller RPG game callled "Outward" that fully commits to this idea with your backpack/inventory playing a huge role in that aspect.

When I first played dragons dogma I was kinda mad there wasn't a fast travel system. But, the more I played, and found shortcuts and alternate routes, I loved just walking around and finding my way. It was so much fun.

Dragon's Dogma doubling down on this made me very happy. I was terrified they would dumb the game down for Funko Pop fans.

Life is not black and white. They could add some QOL features without dumbing down the game.

On my first playthrough, I remember I came across 2 trolls while walking trying to get back to the city in the middle of the night. That was terrifying I froze still for a solid 2 seconds right after my lantern lights started illuminate the 2 trolls, I still remember it clearly to this day, 10 years later. This simply wouldn't have happened if there was free unlimited fast travel in the game. It's the moments like this that sticks with you for a long time. I'm so glad they keep this for the 2nd game. I hope I get moments that will traumatize me again like in the first game lol.

Definitely, adding fast travel would eliminate that fear which is what the game design wants. I remember also something like that as I was returning from Shadow fortress during the night and Chimera attacked me along with like 10 skeletons and the entire time I am fighting with my stamina as I was sprinting back to the city.

I'm happy DD2 is doubling down on the limited fast travel, it shows they've put in the effort to make the world a lot more full and interesting than the first game. It'll likely have several different routes and shortcuts you can take to and from locations so that you've not going down the same paths all the time and get to always find new things as you go. And if it's balanced well, by the time you start getting sick of an area might be when you find a portcrystal and don't have to do those same trips anymore. Dragons Dogma was always about the journey and not just going objective to objective. I can't wait to start exploring and I'm not stopping until ever inch of that map is filled in.

Never use fast travel (except lore friendly options such as magic or mounts) and I have played some huge RPGs! It is the journey that truly makes these games my favorite genre!

If your video game has an open-world and the fast travel is limited make sure your traversal options remain fun and interesting. So, keeping that in mind, let's see what kind of traversal options Dragon's Dogma 2 has, shall we? A) Hold the Left Stick forward + a face button to run (?), you run out of stamina, wait a couple of seconds for the whole animation of your character getting exhausted to play out, start walking and wait to regain stamina, repeat. B) Buy stones to place them on the ground so you can fast travel to the area you placed the thing in later. Buy those things using the in-game currency, of course. We would not want to have a situation where game developers tease you with that currency on the game store screen, would we now? Ok, but what if you have no money? Revert back to the option A. C) Ox-Cart Ride! You pay for an Ox-Cart and it transports you to a random place, you can't skip the ride itself and you have to watch as your character(s) gets transported very slowly from place A to place B, but you have an option to sit. Ok, but what if you have no money? Revert back to the option A. I guess ALL three options are realistic and they remind you that you're still human in this Fantasy RPG. Video game quality of life features aren't needed in video games, because they remind people that real life is indeed hard and tedious. And that is Itsuno's Vision for Dragon's Dogma 2 - hard and deep provoking title that lets you fully immerse yourself in its world with all of its flaws and hardships. I agree with the video, basically.

Fun for the first 30-40 hours. Now I’m 100 hours in, haven’t beat the main quest yet just from exploring everything and I’m fed up with it. I’ll hop on, look where I need to go, go play something else. Feels like a chore. Running through the same place, fighting the same enemies over and over and over is just tedious and boring. The boss monsters aren’t a challenge, I run past the Drakes because I can’t carry or use anymore Wyrmslife. And I only have 10 ferrystones left so it’s just not fun at all. I wish I would have followed online guides and pushed through the main story instead of saving it for last because at this rate I just won’t do it.

Agreed. If your open world game has/needs instant fast-travel, then it shouldn't be open world.

Yeah but the monster you killed shouldn't respawn along the same path either then, especially the the same number and same type.
@LastKnownMeal

I agree with both statements here tbh, making respawn time a bit longer would be ok being that I had multiple situations in DD1 where I had to fight back and forth in a very short timespan and went through all of the consumables.

I wonder if this game is for me... Because on one hand i really like souls game, i liked Elden Ring and Bloodborne is one of my favorite games ever, i absolutely love open world games too like Witcher, Cyberpunk, RDR. But on the otherside i really don't like Monster Hunters at all. Im worried i will end up being bored after 10/15 hours because i feel like i have nothing to do, no goals to work towards, since the game doesnt really have a story right ? Does it take a long time to get your character to the highest level ?
@LastKnownMeal
@LastKnownMeal 3 месяца назад
Game does have a story and lore, its actually quite packed with it. When it comes to monster hunter its not really only about hunting monsters, its just those enemies inhabit the world, you still have your bandits, goblins and all the other stuff with it. When it comes to the level, getting to max level in dd1 took a while but after like lvl 100 above it doesnt matter all that much.

Limited fast travel is fine. I don't even remember having a problem with it when I played the OG and I'm the type that would abuse fast travel if it was in a game. OG does not have unlimited ferrystone like Dark Arisen. The only thing I don't like is the out of combat stamina drain. Fromsoft nailed that part as Stamina drain on an open world is gonna kill the fun about exploring.

There’s certain games where having no, or very limited, fast travel options could work well, idk if this is one of em.. but I think a game like cyberpunk could’ve benefitted from having no fast travel at all .. the city is small enough, the cars r fast enough, and there’s never a time where u have to travel back to a quest giver to get ur reward.. that’s the perfect scenario to eliminate fast travel

@Bateluer
@Bateluer 3 месяца назад
Limiting or restricting fast travel options usually just annoys the player, reduces the likelihood of exploration, reduces the likelihood that player will go off the beaten path, and motivates modders to fix the problem. Effective fast travel is a critical design feature that should be a mandatory feature in any large open game zone.
@LastKnownMeal
@LastKnownMeal 3 месяца назад
There is already a system for that with Ferrystones. Yes I agree it can annoy player but thats only if the game is not designed well and for it. This one relies on you searching out stuff yourself and optimizing best path to go back and forth.

If your mental framework for open world games is based on Ubisoft, modern Bethesda, and CDPR, I could see why you believe that.
@loc5294
@loc5294 3 месяца назад
DD aims to give a mix of exploration/discovery/combat to the players. How would it be possible if players teleport every time before there is even an interaction ? You can't discover anything in a place you didn't even visit.
@louisgworld

@loc5294 fast travel would also invalidate many other mechanics and balance in the game.
@phant0mdummy

You sound stupid. Stop being a puppet. Fast travel exists because designers have become lazy, and don't create open worlds with a REASON. They just do it because it sells. An open world needs interesting traversal or design choices that necessitate it being open world to begin with. You're so mindless you don't understand you have played 30 open world games that should have been linear, and the design teams spent no time trying to create an engaging world or interesting traversal system.
