ATF Fluid (Matic-S): amzn.to/3l0fdAN
19mm Socket: amzn.to/3BUJHuT
Skinny Funnel: amzn.to/2Yqc1GP
I show you how to drain and fill your Automatic Transmission Fluid on my 2005 Nissan Frontier which has the same transmission up to 2021. You do not want to risk doing a flush on the system, as this could potentially push metal particles between the gears, risking a catastrophic failure. This vehicle also has the same transmission as the Nissan Pathfinder and the Nissan X-Terra. It took exactly 1 gallon of Valvoline MAX Life fully synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid. The specs call for Matic-S ATF. Valvoline Max Fully Synthetic covers these specifications.
Step 1: Drain the transmission fluid. This requires a 19mm socket and an extension to get past a support bar. Drain the fluid into a catch bucket and tighten the drain plug back on the transmission pan.
Step 2: Measure out the volume of the fluid so you can make sure you fill up the transmission fluid up to the proper level.
Step 3: Unscrew the Automatic Transmission Fluid dip-stick (10mm Socket). You will need a long extension to access the bolt head.
Step 4: Fill up the ATF the same amount as was removed.
Step 5: Start the vehicle, shift through the gears, and drive for a 5 minute period. Measure the level of the fluid by viewing the dip-stick and top off as necessary.
This fluid and method can be used for Nissan Frontiers for the following years: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021

Thanks for the video, it’s nice to know I don’t have to pump it into the back of the transmission like a ‘22 Tacoma. I would say to include taking the pan off and cleaning the magnet that’s on the pan though. A very overlooked yet important thing to do with a trans fluid change.

That is the power of synthetic transmission fluid. I did a complete synthetic fluid swap at 75k miles. I changed it at 175k, so 100k miles and that's what it looked like. Amazing. Synthetic fluids don't break down like standard fluids. Even synthetic motor oil can go like 25k before needing to be changed. Filters need to be swapped, but the oil is good.

@Johnsmith46392
@Johnsmith46392 6 месяцев назад
It looks like that does an almost complete drain of the fluid. So I’m guessing a complete fluid exchange or transmission flush is a waste of money?
@NissanDudeAZ
@NissanDudeAZ 6 месяцев назад
A forced AT fluid flush is almost never recommended, since it could dislodge chunks of metal that could have been chipped off the transmission and remain somewhere within the system. Those chunks could then work their way into the gears and cause problems. A drain and fill is the way to go. Much less risk and no concerns about the issues caused by a forced flush.

I'm confused because the owners manual and all online resources say the Frontier 4.0L takes 10-7/8 qts of ATF ( about 2.75 gal). How did you manage doing this with less than half the required fluid?
@trentspeak
@trentspeak 4 месяца назад
The transmission holds all that liquid simple drain and fill just uses abt a gallon
@Bill-tz1fr
@Bill-tz1fr 4 месяца назад
When you drain the pan you are only draining less than half the oil in the transmission, the rest is in the torque converter. The way i do it is drain the pan and refill with the same amount that came out. Drive it 100 miles or so and repeat same process, drive it another 100 or so miles drain and refill with fresh oil again, drive it 100 or so miles again drop pan, replace filter and fill with fresh oil, done. That works very well for me, oil looks like mew.

What does changing transmission fluid do? If it was already filled almost all the way before , Whats the purpose of refilling with new. Excuse my arrogance.
@ProfessionalPepper
@ProfessionalPepper 2 года назад
Most oils degrade over time when encountering high temperatures and pressures. The fluid also picks up metal particulants from the transmission over time. These 2 factors change the viscosity of the fluid and can lead to a catastrophic failure of the transmission, or it can just lead to slippage of gears or failure of the torque converter. Synthetic fluids are much less likely to degraded under heat, pressure, and time.

For the drain and fill it was just 1 gallon, but the total Transmission fluid capacity Via Frontier Service Manual (pg. AT-332) @ 10 & 7/8ths quarts. That is only needed if you do a system flush which is never recommended unless you had water infiltration.
