Yep. Imagine the day when we have personal battery meters like that ad from a few years ago. Hah! Although I suppose that would have its own positives and negatives. Still, I’d rather my pilot, brain surgeon, etc have a personal battery level above 50% rather than below 50%.

I flew commercially for almost 40 years. If I had to say there was one constant companion during the whole process I would say that it was fatigue. I flew for a commuter airline that did something called a stand up overnight that put such a load on the pilot that it was way beyond safety and yet it was legal. If I were a passenger in an airplane I would not want to know that my crew was completely worn out from fatigue and unable to safely execute their flying duties. The last job in my career was charter flying. It was a constant variation of schedules. Early takeoff sometimes late landings. Driving home from the airport when you were so tired I could barely keep the car on the road. The problem with fatigue is that most pilots realize it’s there but many times don’t realize it until it’s too late. I was in the habit of briefing fatigue as a factor in the landing briefing just like weather on the last flight of the day. Even on a visual approach I would make sure there was an instrument approach in place to have additional guidance during the landing. Flying was an interesting adventure but I’m glad it’s over. Over the years people of said that they would like to be a commercial pilot. And I said I will tell you what it’s like and then you tell me what you think.

Fatigue has almost the exact same effect as alcohol. People have the impression that pilots work very few hours compared to their own work in an office. I have, on one occasion, been making an approach into Heathrow (London Airport) where the FO has had to tap me hard on the shoulder as I was falling asleep while flying an instrument approach in very, very bad weather. He was in no better condition than myself. Typically, a cross-wind landing with a similar-sized aircraft to this would be limited to 10 knts on a contaminated runway.. their crosswind was right on limits for a dry surface runway, this was very definitely a contaminated runway. We make thousands of approaches, landing safely, over our long careers, they all end, as they should, in people quietly exiting the aircraft. The one occasion when it goes wrong is 'a shot heard around the world'. I retired a few years ago, I feel a quiet satisfaction that I damaged no aircraft and injured no one. There were some very testing moments.

The ATC also seemed extremely concerned with the weather situation which was far from ideal. 5 flights in a day for the Pilot/FO....that's dangerous to say the least and Fatigue was inevitable. Myself not being a pilot, and just wondering, are these folks fired after an incident as this one where, yes, mistakes were made, but, other factors were present? Or are they retrained and perhaps evaluated, maybe reassigned? And, if let go, are their careers as pilots over? You do need to take into account the ‘human factor’. Also, reality is that a pilot is not ‘made’ overnight, so the skills already in place could still be of use somehow.
@peteconrad2077
@peteconrad2077 3 года назад
The better airlines run a policy whereby pilots who have made genuine mistakes and have no chronic record of poor performance receive training and remain in the airline. The pilots will have to demonstrate in that training that they have the competence to continue though. If there is a failure of decision making or leadership, captains are generally demoted and required to undergo a long retraining period before being considered for command again.

I'm a little confused by these "slippery runway" incidents. I'm not a pilot, but formerly a frequent airline flier. To me it always seemed that once reverse thrust was applied the aircraft was down to walking speed in 10 or 15 seconds, even in rain or snow conditions, and that wheel braking wouldn't matter much at all. Can the pilot decide to rely more on reverse thrust and less on brakes? Or is the amount of RT always the same?
@georgeconway4360

Effective braking is what stops an airplane. Reverse helps a little, probably less than 20%. Standing water on a runway is a big problem. Poorly designed runway.

Never heard of this incident. I've heard of the other BritAir crash that killed the captain, but this one is new to me. Has AJI ran out of the Mayday scenarios?

If the view the pilots had was as dark as the exterior shots in this video it's no wonder they didn't know where they were.

There's no mention of reversers. Not armed? Spoilers not in auto? Missed those checklist items? Oops! Definitely not paying attention to heavy rain and puddles warnings. Surely a fatigued few. Very fortunate indeed.

A small part of the accident report.. "Nine seconds later, the main landing gear touched the ground about 1,130 m from threshold 25. The ground speed was 140 kt. The spoilers were extended. The crew deployed the thrust reversers and then applied "Max reverse" thrust. The aeroplane decelerated."

So here's my question, for anyone who knows or cares to answer, do the pilots get fired because they can't do basic cockpit checklists to completion & crash a plane? I would hate to fly on a plane by some of the pilots/co pilots in Allec's videos. Imagine knowing.. or actually NOT knowing the pilot on your flight home or on to your vacation destination has crashed a plane only months or years prior? Scary

5 flights in one day? How is that allowed?
@speedlever

I’m sure because it was well within the crew’s duty day as defined by the regulations.

If they're short flights, it makes sense. Also, these regional aircraft can easily handle that. I mean, it's only about 5 flight hours per day.

We need AI to fly the planes. We humans make too many errors.
@nigelalderman9178

I was in a car steered by AI on a test track, there was a safety driver. The car slid slightly on wet area then suddenly added a lot of power turned 90deg and crashed hard into the Armco setting off all the airbags. The safety driver sighed "Oh no not again!" Got out and started picking up the bits. he said nothing to the passengers. He could not have done anything to prevent the accident, it was like lightening. A car came and picked us all up with a mild sorry about that. Who knows what the AI was thinking??
