And here I thought the tools in my dad's garage were woodworking tools. A plainer, a good nipper(I thought it was for pulling u-shaped fence nails), a homemade kbar knife, etc. Dad died before I turned 5, and my stepdad sold his horse thinking we were going to stay in town.

Gotta say thank you for clarifying that the mooing was coming from a different cow, and explaining how the cow would react if you were hurting it. Makes watching the video much more bearable. It’s not the blood or pus or cutting that bothers me, it’s pain that does.

@@gh6st575 No I do, I’m just a hypocrite, like 70% of other meat eaters out there. I just don’t want to see an animal suffering. However, I’m not delusional. I know what my meats been through. That’s life unfortunately. That being said, if I’m watching a video of what is essentially cow hoof surgery, I don’t want it to cross over into cow torture porn. That’s not my jam. If that’s yours, whatever. I mean that’d be pretty effed up, but if cow suffering gets you off that’s your prerogative, not mine.

@@AngryK1tty even stopping just beef and pork most of the time is already a lot better for the environment. If you want to eat big mammal meat without the bad conscience you can go for wild game that's responsibly hunted (ie for population control) You don't have to go full vegetarian to help the environment or minimise suffering in animals

One day my wife complained about her foot. My eyes just light up and before my brain gave my any warning I enthusiastically opened my stupid mouth with something like " O! My brother, greetings from Alabama!! I stumbled upon you via the RU-vid algorithm and never looked back my friend. My mom kept horses in California, where my brother and I were born and raised, a little bit different than your trade, but not much. When the "horseshoe man", farrier showed up, I was right there! Graeme, You always talk about horn being "soft" when digital dermatitis is involved, but I've never seen a better demonstration than at 3:58. You press your knife in and the horn is either so soft or detached that it actually moves out of the way of your very sharp knife. I thought that was interesting to finally see really demonstrated on video as tactile sensation is hard to convey. Thanks for all you do for the animals and I love your videos. PS: I'm an EM/Surg doctor in the US and I wish I could use a knife like yours sometimes while debriding very large "road rash" type wounds or burns.

@@katis7673 I've seen some terrible terrible road rash. We're talking complete flaying of the skin and opening of muscular groups. The initial statement was a joke, but "road rash" isn't in major MVAs. Sometimes you it feels like you have to take way too much but you need a solid basis for grafts and need to have perfectly clean live tissue so those muscle groups will heal.

I've got an appointment with MY "Hoof GP" (OK, my podiatrist) at 11:00 today. It's 2:45 AM, and yes, I should be in bed, but I think I'll watch just ONE more of your videos. When I see the fluid running down the cow's hoof, I can't help but think how much relief she's feeling right then. I never get tired seeing the relief you give these cows, or the compassion you show for them. To these cows, you are not a hoof trimmer....you're an angel.

Recently, a friend of mine called me, we discussed an issue she has with one of her goats hooves. I literally said outloud "Block it" and "Have you tried iodine?" Lol! Also, I'm not a vet. But living around and interacting with farm animals my entire adult life and those farmers that have been tending their own livestock for decades, pay attention and you learn the old ways of doing things. And when in doubt, ALWAYS seek out veterinarian help! The goat is doing great btw, iodine and antibiotics are doing the trick 🙂

I've watched a couple others, but keep coming back to The Hoof GP because I really REALLY like how he explains everything. This is something that makes me quite happy, because I learn from it. Never going to use it - I live where there are no cows. BUT! It's fun to learn.

I think it's horn, bro -- delaminated horn to be exact. The delamination happens when the horn is no longer attached to the corium (for a variety of reasons like digital dermatitis, etc), which is why he needs to remove it. Otherwise, it would have impeded with the healing process. Hope that helps!

I love this! My Aunt and Uncle ran a Dairy in Northern Idaho. To this day I love the smells of a dairy. Had to ask if they used a farrier…they did! Once a year on those cows that needed it. You bring me joy!

I can't even imagine the cows hooves here in Ireland, we keep having week long heat waves then 2 days rain. Its like a sauna one minute then a thunderstorm the next. We'll done Graham for doing your amazing work once again, and helping this cow ❤️

I enjoyed seeing had tools being used again. My dad had horses on the farm we used when it was too cold for equipment to run. We live in Manitoba Canada and sometimes have temperatures of - 50 C. Today’s modern equipment is better and horses are a thing of the past but we seniors still remember them.

There’s a lot of free range cows that don’t get these problems near as much, like my family never has to deal with this bc our cows are on rocky environments and it’s fairly dry, so they don’t get infections, but obviously well doctor cows if they start limping without an obvious reason lol

Whenever I see this infection, I compare it to the blisters or ingrown nails, that humans get and the pain that accompanies them for us! I wince every time that you have to slice more and more of the sole of their feet and am so grateful that you care so much about herd health! I know you say that the pressure release for the cow is good for them, but I still wince and go looking for another episode of your latest work! Thanks for doing such a great job!

Hi Graham, I just want you to know that I watch lots of your videos. I was a farm wife for more than 40 years until I lost my husband to cancer. He did all of his farming from his wheelchair. I know I know… blah blah blah. What impresses me most (aside from your expert care) is the most important thing to you seems to be the comfort and health of these wonderful ladies that you care for. I like the little reassurance at 6:20. Not even just because I wonder whether the animals are feeling pain or stress from the treatment, but because I always wonder just how much the animals understand that they're being helped, and that their pain and ailments are being treated by these actions. Especially if they have to receive this kind of care multiple times, or see other animals being tended to and healing as a result.

I'm not sure why I watch every video, I don't have any interest in doing this for a living. I'm glad there all people who do this for the benefit of the animals. It's probably all the aerial footage of Scotland, makes me want to visit it some day.

"matthew renfro" Probably very few people can do this. It takes more than even just wanting to do it. A person has to be born into the environment of farming and cows and an older-world lifestyle and from an early age just get to know about farm animals and get into actually doing this kind of foot surgery on cows. I'm not absolutely sure but I think that going to veterinary school is not even necessary or the main thing. A person has to have known cows and worked with them for all or most of his or her life. It also takes a talent for it. It is an exotic type of job. When a person who does it grows too old to do it, then it could take a few generations until someone comes along and can take that person's place.

After that one I must watch something else as it pains me to see cows with such painful problems but take solace from the fact that you are treating them. This is the addictive nature of your videos. I just want to see cows walking normally and pain free. The music is much appreciated, so calming.
