Draining an Abandoned Koi Pond! 

be nice to see a follow up in a couple of months, how their colors have changed/brightened and what mixes they have. great job saving them

I'm not sure if I'm more impressed by the fishes ability to survive in that environment or by your dedication to replying to hundreds of comments. Either way, fascinating video!

It's nice to see that the new home owner wanted to save these fish and have a healthy environment for them rather than just leaving them abandoned as they have been.

For those surprised that the fish were doing just fine, koi and goldfish can eat algae and bugs and worms, and were likely just eating the excess algae growth from the surfaces. The algae also have a beneficial effect of oxygenating the water and dealing with fish waste. Additionally, the pond seems pretty large, and they likely had plenty of space. On top of that the cloudy water provides cover from whatever might try to eat them.

Holy moly, I was not expecting how deep that pond was!!! It would be amazing to have a huge pond like that!!

WOW I didn't expect a single fish to survive in there! Thats actually rather impressive! Few plants and critters to clean the water and it would have been one step away from being self sustaining!

Amazing how they can survive in that with only Algae and the occasional insect to eat and probably no filtration. Just goes to show how hardy they really are

I adopted a betta that I named Cherry because she initially had very little color and resembled a cherry salmon. Just a few months later and she's a deep blackish color with bright red fins and shiny stripes of blue. Fish changing color in good conditions is wild.

If the owner of this pond is willing, please do a follow up in a few months time. So many of us watching are wondering how those fish will potentially recover whatever colour they may have had as they get the time

Imagine going from a world of constant green goopy haze into a crystal clear one of bright blue checks, as one by one, everyone you’ve ever known, joins you! Then you are just as quickly returned to your home, only vastly improved in a way you never imagined! You guys just gave these fish a Religious Experience! 😄

My parents have had a Koi pond in their garden ever since I was a kid and seeing Kois abandoned like that in such a terribly dirty pond upsets me a lot. Those poor fish! Glad the new owner wants to take care of them.

Its so sad that they were abandoned, if this pond was maintained, it would of been like a mansion to to them, so big and so deep

Nice video! However as a koi owner for over 30 years, I have to point out that there is a massive difference between a Koi Pond, and a pond with koi fish in it. This is a pond with koi fish in it. A "real" koi pond is about 2 meters deep, has one or more bottom drains with a beefy filter (both mechanical and biological). Furthermore a rule of thumb for a koi pond is that it needs to be at least 1000 liter PER KOI. So if you have 25 koi, you need at least a 25.000 liter pond. Although the size of this pond would be good, it is not deep enough and the filtration system is probably not even good enough for 5 medium size koi.

That big koi is a Chagoi (tr. brown carp), not the most colourful but generally the most friendly of all koi varieties. Generally they tend to be broader than coloured koi, including the head and fins. A koi's colour will generally come out better in coloured or murky water and fade in clear water, that is why top breeders in Japan use muddy cloudy pools to keep and breed their prize koi. Nice to see you looked after them and a great clean up of the pool!

I had a client who thought he had a leak in his koi pond, I emptied it and used a large inflatable kids pool as the fish storage, I added a pump to make a fountain to try and oxygenate the water for the fish, similar to what they had in the original pond, I cleaned the pond and looked for leaks, I think it was in the water feature and through evaporation that they were losing water volume, so I added a self fill device if the water level went down. They later hired in someone to clean the pond and they put all their fish into a small little tote and left it in the sun, the fish were dead by the next day, the homeowner was furious and couldn't understand why they had such disregard for the health of the fish while storing them outside the pond. Koi can be very expensive for certain fish, whoever he hired just disappeared and he couldn't ever get them back on the line to even discuss them paying for the lost fish.

theres a certain beauty in this video. maybe im just stoned asf but the charm in this is that its just a simple cleanup for the pond. youre not going out of your way to make it the most beautiful it could be, and it just is another example of sometimes it doesnt need to be pretty to be perfect. you seriously improved the quality of life for these fish and i think thats way cooler. good job man seriously awesome

I could not believe it at first when you said there were fish in there. I legit was like "Oh poor fishies." out loud. haha And then when you started pulling them out I could not believe their size! Also how much their colour improved just within 24 hours! Thanks for saving them and fab job on the pond fellas!

The depth on that pond is amazing!!

Years back at the family farm, I decided to release 6 goldfish into the pond. The pond was approx 20’X40’ by 10’ deep. The goldfish were about 6” when I put them in. (They were outgrowing my huge indoor tank) Within a month I noticed 2 herons frequenting the pond, so I assumed my goldfish were doomed. The pond had the typical rushes by also lots of underwater growth so ‘seeing’ the goldfish was rare. Then I got real busy with work so months went by before I checked the pond. It was an extremely hot dry summer but I was still shocked to see the ponds water lever reduced to only about 1’. So armed with a bucket and a net I went to see if any goldfish remained that needed rescuing. Sure enough I spotted 1 right away but the vegetation made netting impossible. Figuring I’d pull the growth out then rescue the fish. As soon as I stuck my hands into the ponds water, I pulled my hands back out and let out a very unmanly girl scream. Something had wiggled in my hands! Turns out all 6 of the original goldfish were still in the pond (now grown to be 12-14”), but they had bred. The wiggling was millions of 1” gold/brown babies. So armed with a finer net I began scooping babies. The 6 adults went into a kiddie pool. The babies I quit catching after I had 2 5gallon pails stuffed full with more fish than water. Which I immediately took to my nearest pet shop, he bought them as ‘feeders’. But he also bought each of the parents from me, coming out a couple days later with camp coolers to transport them in.

I never would have guessed how many fish were in there nor how deep it was! How many gallons does that thing hold? I think the saving grace for the fish was that it was deep enough to prevent wild fluctuations of temp and ammonia ect. Nature made its own bio cycle.

Falling leaves or nature has saved these fish. The leaves are eaten by the friendly bacteria as the leaves break down. Same goes for nitrates and ammonia. The algae will be behaving like plants to also eat harmful things. Great video

So something a lot of people don't know: while it's not recommended to keep them in such conditions, goldfish/koi naturally live in very murky, dirty, unkempt water (well, as unkempt as natural water can be lol). While this pond in its past state was by no means the ideal living situation for them, as you can see, they clearly were able to adapt.

I love seeing this kind of pond rescue.. Credit where it is due chaps. I've had similar issues with cracked crystal on UV filters. I actually lost several Koi as a result, as the cracked crystal allowed the fish to be slowly electrocuted, I only realized they were being electrocuted when I tried to remove the deceased fish. (felt like pins and needles on my skin). Ofc there's also a part of me that understands that the pond being pea soup doesn't bother the fish at all and it's only us humans interfering, that force the fish to live in clear water. I imagine a new born baby screaming at birth because of the overwhelming extra light. Still, I enjoyed watching this.. Thank you.

Such a good video, subscribing was easy decision. When I was a kid there was an abandoned water park up the road. We'd sneak in and it was crazy the amount of fish that not just lived there but thrived in the green waters. People dumped unwanted goldfish. Few put the odd roach/tench/common in etc. Years later when it was drained there were some crazy fantail/common hybrids taken out.
