I love seeing a 3h analysis of Drakengard! Ohhh I'm so excited. I'm still not finished yet, but... I'm sorry, just going to be a little pedantic about 54:55 (because I spent way too much time overanalyzing everything about this stupid game lmao) - Caim does not have incestuous felings towards Furiae. Characters question him about it, albeit in a roundabout way. Inuart especially can't bring himself to ask outright for obvious reasons, maybe he even assumes it's a thing given the dialogue you show. Angelus outright challenges Caim and tells him that it shouldn't matter that they are siblings, but the implication is that to Caim it does matter. He does not share Furiae's feelings. The dialogue you show questions Caim about their relationship and Furiae's feelings, but there is nothing to indicate Caim reciprocates, or at least I have looked for it and found nothing myself. He clearly still cares about his sister, but not in the way she does. Although I fully agree on your point about the censorship of this theme. It is just as explicit as the japanese dialogue. Maybe it's just a matter of being used to japanese media and the way they write dialogue.

I just happened to see this comment pop up while looking through my e-mail, what a funny little coincidence. I did some quick research on this and you are indeed correct. I don't mention it in the video but I thought his side of this whole incest thing was shown in more detail in Drakengard 1.3 so I looked at the game's dialogue through a very different lense but it turns out his incestuous side comes from Drag-On Dragoon Judgement which is a prequel to Drakengard. However, this prequel contradicts a lot of events from the game and other official materials and is thus largely ignored and most likely not canon so this is an error on my part. But it sounds like you're enjoying the video so far, hopefully it stays that way. Enjoy!

@@Alexander_Gaming A fun coincidence :D Yeah, Judgement is an odd one. But to be fair, every piece of DrakeNier media contradicts one another in some way. It gets confusing. I really enjoyed the video! The attention to detail, added context of mission dialogue (a lot of people overlook them), and even the little visual aids of the controller inputs. I can tell a lot of work went into it. The vine boom joke took me by surprise and made me really laugh. And I always really appreciate a Drakengard music enjoyer. You seem to really understand and appreciate the game for what it wanted to achieve despite its flaws. I also really agree with you on the subject on the remake. I worry about losing what made it so unique and compelling. But if approached correctly, ah, it would be fantastic to see Drakengard expanded upon. I started the series with Replicant and Drakengard 1 just has a very special place in my heart. I still hunger for more media like it.

@@Alexander_Gaming Kenku covered my comments regarding the incest stuff, but I wanted to add this additional little tidbit! Watchers can be another term for Grigori, a type of apocryphal type of angel. Depending on your source, they're either the angels that created the nephilim; which were humans and angel hybrids, fallen angels cast out of heaven or they're invisible spirits that roam the earth. So the localized name was a sort of oblique way to censor it without pissing off the church.

You deserve way more attention, amazing video. Not easy to summarize the story this well and easily digestable, while also giving important details and design choices the room they need. It's been so long that i played it and i will deffo replay it soon after watching this.I think a remake has potential, but i agree that its unlikely to stay as dark as it is, when admittedly it should be even more darker/shocking. And exploring characters and their story more. It's quite impressive what came out of a "joke" ending and years of writing lore. Which for me is the best part of the series, and started here: the lore.

Fantastic, in-depth look at an underrated classic! I've been consuming all of the lore I can get from the Taroverse for several years now, and it never occurred to me until you pointed it out that Inuart was trying to sing when he was saying Furiae's name. You definitely deserve more views. Subbed!

I see Drakengard, I like. I just want to let everyone know that after I got every ending for drakengard 1 and 2, I can officially no longer be bored by anything, nothing else has ever come close to the sheer intensity of the Stockholm syndrome those 2 games have given me. If anyone wants to play this game, just know that, yes, this game will induce a level of insanity in you, but it's worth it if you crave a truly depraved and dark story. Also, "the stfu I'm listening to chapter 5", got me way harder than it should have. This is also coming from the person who listens to the soundtrack unironically. Also, one of my favorite interpretations for the reason that Caim loses his voice is that it's supposed to represent the helplessness of war. In war you don't have a voice-- a method by which to express yourself-- all you have is kill or be killed, a loss of individuality. His parent's death, to his castle being attacked, and they are implied to be losing. Angulus has to 'speak' for him. Each of the seals keeps being broken. He seems to never makes a choice in the game other than kill, adding to this sense of helplessness and loss of individuality. During the cutscene where Inuart comes with his black dragon, you can see that Caim is trying to scream as Angulus is getting his throat ripped out, but again he is helpless to do or say anything. Which is why when he gets his voice back he says "I am Caim", a statement that is meant to reassure oneself in their own individuality.

Interesting interpretation as to why he loses his voice! To me it doesn't really fit together as Caim is inherently driven by slaughter, for his main pleasure he doesn't need a voice. There are only two times it would be vital for him to have it: When they're attacked by Inuart as you mentioned and when he finds Furiae in route D. He can't stop her from committing suicide as he can't speak. It is for sure about him losing his individuality though. At this point in time it's his sword that does the talking; an object. I looked at the "I am Caim!" line in the Japanese version and he says "我が名はカイム!" which translates into "My name is Caim!". So the focus has been shifted from him as a person to his name, which not only tells us that he is himself again but also that he carries the name that has been given to him by his parents. I suppose you could see this as him finally coming face-to-face with the black dragon from his past. After all, Angelus' chaos form has black scales. With all that said I'm not gonna say that either one of us is right or wrong. As long as there's something to support an interpretation, as you have clearly shown, they can both be valid. That's the beauty of art!

@@Alexander_Gaming the Japanese translation is definitely very interesting. And yeah this game is definitely a work of art and I by no means saying my interpretation is correct. I’ve got some of your videos lined up to watch. Cant wait to get around to those

@@musichopper3644 I hope you enjoy my other videos. The editing quality should be similar although the voice over pre-Drakengard bugs me. Not sure why but I sound less energetic and more monotone in them. Maybe I was nervous? There is a pretty big gap of time between this video and the ones that came before.

Regarding the localized title, I believe the "gard" in Drakengard comes from the "gard" in Midgard and so on, meaning something like the Dragon-earth or Dragon-world. This lines up with the game's project name/ending E title, Dragonsphere. So that, but fancied up :p

What I want for the most part from a Drakengard remake is a refined combat system. Give the ground combat the Nier Replicant/Automata treatment so that levels wouldn't be a slog. Not asking for Caim or Arioch to be flipping about or flash stepping. Just give it a kick up with a variety of combos to the weapons. And change the effect of the magic animation each level of the weapons. Encourage weapon experimentation. And maybe make the flight chapters more on rails like Panzer Dragoon. Now onto the other factors of the game. Do not defang the subject matter. That is the strength of the game's story. With branching and divergent paths. Also, give Arioch something to do. As I feel her character was sorely in need of more development. As there were times she stopped existing until the game decides to pop her in for something crazy, and then die. Speaking of the characters, keep every dark thing about them. But also give them introduction chapters where you play as them. And please keep the sound track the way it is. That is important.

I don't remember if it's a theory or mentioned somewhere but if I recall correctly someone managed to send Tokyo or another major city into the past. Most likely similar to how they send the Queen Beast into our world.

Canon answer is one of the android groups from the Nier world sent it back along with dragons and the flower thing. It became the main city in Drakengard 3's prologue and ending and later the cult capital. The Drakengard 1 answer is unknown, only theory I saw is that the game exists in a closed time loop where the game takes place in the far future and ending E is them being sent back to present day and the city they fight in becomes the cult of the watchers headquarters way way later. Unfortunately we'll never know since the DoD3 answer is what's mostly accepted now.
