Adopted in 1997, South Africa's national anthem reflects Nelson Mandela's desire to unite all of our people. It combines "Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika" (Lord, Bless Africa), the official anthem of the African National Congress, with "Die Stem van Suid-Afrika" (The Call of South Africa), the country’s national anthem before democracy.
With lyrics in isiXhosa, isiZulu, seSotho, Afrikaans and English, the anthem is the only neo-modal anthem in the world, as it ends in a different key from the one in which it starts.
The only new words are the English lyrics which encourage us to strive for unity and freedom in our country.
Filmed on location at The Drakensberg Boys Choir School in Champagne Valley, Drakensberg.
