At the smelter down the line, I bet they throw all types of copper into the same cauldron and skim the impurities off the top while laughing about the term "different grades".

Running a smelter isn’t cheap. It’s also time consuming. Why shouldn’t they pay based on grade? The customer can feel free to buy their own smelter and spend their own time making ingot if they wanna be paid premium
@ScrapDaddy968
@ScrapDaddy968 2 месяца назад
Smelters will reject or downgrade a 10,000 lb load from a yard in heart beat if it doesnt meet their spec. Not all smelters are able to handle the dirty stuff either. Most shady yards are actually just not good at sorting their material/understanding the categories and have been burnt too many times selling their loads so they just buy all copper as #2 price type of a thing.
@I_Am_Your_Problem
@I_Am_Your_Problem 2 месяца назад
Your lack of understanding does not change the complexity of the world around you. You better believe smelters control what goes in... because that is the lowest effort highest return work. Correcting in the crucible is expensive. Might not even be possible depending on the contaminate, and the volume.

@removeitprosdemolition Instead of this yard. Even though it's a little further, I would love to see a video of the other scrap yard you talked about the last time. I bet you'd do better then this place. This place is a joke and it pisses me off that they do the shit they do to you and the crew. I would give them zero business. Go to the other one brother. These people are skimming off every pound you bring in and it's plain to see with this going on yet again here. That aluminum when that guy came over in the one vid, probably would've punched him in the face. He knew what he was doing. Knowing you all wouldn't load it back up he waited until the end to say something. Stood there and watched the whole time. That was 100% his plan. The yard sorts it out anyway before it's bailed in their crusher. Floors me! You being them a lot of money when you show up and yet still they pull that bullshit! Says a l9t about their business practices and moral... These yards around here would bow to you with that kind of scrap... They also would up pricing because of the quantity you bring in. I used to bring in mass amount of copper and about 62 tons of aluminum a month. They always paid up for the weight because it was so much. You're in Florida? I'll see if they have a yard there but I am not sure. They also provide a daily price sheet via email you can view the daily payout prices. Let me look and see if they're down your way but may only be around my neck of the woods.

The whole point of any business is MAXIMUM PROFIT at the least cost. Just think of it like when your investing long term in the markets, there is a huge difference in getting a 10% return every year over a few decades compared to getting 8% every year for a few decades…sounds small, but going from 10%-8% in a year is a 20% loss in reality…..

Also, I’m not a market maker/investment advisor, but if I were you I’d put like 50 lbs of your best bare wire to the side in an airtight container and save it every time you get a lot. (yes you might do better just taking cash and investing that in the S&P 500 etc etc) but at the same time a lot of people are saying 2025 is going to be “the year of copper” so it could possibly be worth it, I’ve got over 3,000 lbs set aside that I’m still adding to that I don’t sell…is nice having hard assets, I’ve been stacking gold/silver/platinum for the longest, buy not sell, and eventually realized why not free copper too? Every yard has a scam system. It's their ballpark so you get what they tell you you get. With the amount of wire with insulation, you could have doubled your money. Get a stripper and a machine that cuts off the insulation off 😂 Hire someone or ask if any of your guys want some side work by the piece, pound. The only problem and you said it someone at some point is going to rob your yard.

@@removeitprosdemolitionI own a scrap company and have a yard, its not worth stripping romex, its only worth stripping single strand thick cable. They do have a wire chopper though that does hundreds of pounds an hour that turns it into a copper flake which pays about number 2 copper price. The chopper costs about 10-15 grand to buy. Oh one more thing, number 3 copper doesn't exist, paint on your copper goes as number 2 copper. The only grade less than number 2 copper is called copper sheet so I guess you could call that number 3 copper but the paint isnt bad at all. Their wire price is really low if I heard you correctly. Good luck.

After seeing the loads go, I called $12,000 before they said it. I've hauled a lot of scrap in the past. Bare bright never went for #1 copper for me. Bare Bright brings a higher price than #1. Copper pipe or tube, clean of solder, fittings and no corrosion, is #1 copper in my experience. In the northeast, they loved to call it a "mixed load" or "mixed metal" and drop the price as low as possible. In the South, they'll often let you sort it if you kept it sorted as you loaded it.. In the South, they'll tell you the grades. In the Northeast, the less the customer knows, they better they like it.

Bare Bright isn't Copper #1. It's Bare Bright Copper. A different price. A higher price. Insulated Copper Wire has a lot of different grades. #1 is basically broken down, eventually, into percentages. Usually 70% or higher. Yards like this buy it all at the same price, making it easier on them. Most yards are going to categorize all that copper piping as #2, but they'll sell it as #1. Bluing or not. The only thing they'll separate themselves is soldered pipe joints, insulated, self adhesive leak taped piping, as #2. Even paint gets sold at #1 price. They'll pay you less, but sell it at the higher price. The reason why they don't communicate changes is because the sorting methods they utilize change constantly. They turn it around and do the same thing, essentially, to other, larger metal yards like ALTER or CIMCO. The difference is, they have better prices negotiated due to the fact that they further separate and ship the material. It's a frustrating thing, most of the time. But, you got some good guys who are learning and working hard to get everything sorted, loaded and unloaded in a timely manner.

Hey, brother. I love what you're doing here and really appreciate you giving us tips on how to sort our non-ferrous metals. I thought you should know that amazon sells decent wire strippers for a couple of hundred bucks and they work well. The machines are electric w/ automatic feeding once the rollers are in contact with the wire's insulation so there's not much skill required and a minimum wage employee could be feeding your bins through the machine, full-time, and you'll be turning a good profit while helping a young person with employment. Also, if you're concerned with the weights written on bins, grab a few empty ones and ask them to verify weights on the scale, I would be surprised if you found one that's off, I never have. If you buy your own scale, you will know exactly what you have before bringing it in.

Reminds me of when I used to hustle clothing when I was younger. Would buy from thrift shops, recondition/wash/etc and then sell to Buy-Sell-Trade style shops. They would usually price certain things certain amounts - I got used to receiving certain cash values for a quality of merchandise. Sometimes you'd take a load in and the person wasn't in a good mood or they find a flaw on something and you kinda get jipped. I was used to getting about $10-12 per item at this one store and then one day I go in and someone different did the buy and was telling me $6-7 per item.. So I ended up pulling the whole load. I took everything back and didn't really go back in there again. She lost that store a pretty good seller (me) and all the inventory I offered for what.. a few bucks on that particular buy? lol. @mothballenema9595

It's interesting to see how different operations can be from place to place. I work in a scrapyard similar to this one but much smaller, we are only 2 people there. Having slight variations in material grading between different scrapyards is common simply due to where the scrapyards resell the metals. If 2 yards sell to different end clients, then grading and prices will likely differ slightly (emphasis on slightly) Our standard practice is informing our clients how they best sort their materials in order to make the most profit. This may seem counter intuitive, but all the labor we save by not having to do much sorting and refining turns out to be the most profitable solution for both our company and our clients. We can't always offer the best price per kilo, sometimes our competitors have slightly better prices, that's just how the market works, so it's always a proud moment when we have clients tell us that they drive past a handful of other scrapyards to visit us because they trust us and it's an overall better experience to visit our yard. My point being that we are not all the same :)

I hope they pay you higher price per pound with the volume of material you bring in.

Whatever the price they are giving for the material that's it. That's why we try the best we can in the process steps so we get the most we can for what we have.

most yards up north will pay higher rates if you bring in bulk material like that.

American Manufacturing in Fremont CA closed down many years ago. They had been supplying the US navy with base plates to their giant guns. A guy I met at Schnitzer Oakland, told me that his brother-in-law was the superintendent on Demolishing the plant and let him scrap out the base plates. They were 14 or 18 feet in diameter and three inches thick, four in total and solid copper !!! BONUS !

With the amount that you are scraping, it might be worth having someone call around to scrapyards in your area to negotiate pricing with the owner. If you are bringing in 100k of scrap every year then you are making the yard at least 50k. You should have a yard catering to you.

We had one of our supervisors call this yard and told them we were coming and discussed prices on some of this stuff. This is the only scrapyard that is available for us at the moment. In the near future we will be able to try another. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!

That's the 1st thing I did with my barrels is put both top and bottom handles on them. Only difference in mine is that I got mine free. You can get them online all the time. You and your team work tirelessly on that metal and with your smarts of finding homes I know definitely that you can find another scrap yard to take your truck with trailer to.

@@removeitprosdemolition sims metal management has yards on the east side of Florida. By like west palm beach or something? They are probably the yard that most of your smaller yards take the metal to. It might benefit you to call them and check out how they operate. With $11k loads it wouldn’t hurt to drive a bit, although I don’t know where your located.

I always feel bad for the rookies. I remember how it felt just starting and learning how to identify and separate everything. They get screwed so bad and so did i. I live in a smaller city now and honestly the yard I go to is very chill and they help a lot. I think they are doing well and have no need to cheat nickle n diming people. Im glad

You know the rookies on both sides. One of the guys this working at that scrap. Yard reached out to us and told us that people are getting fired over our videos. I don't understand why they would get fired for doing their job correctly. But I don't even know that it's true, but I know that the owner of the company called us and asked us. To not video there anymore and my general manager is like, okay, well, what do you got to hide? I said we had nothing to hide. What do you guys got to hide all we're doing is? This is just part of our business process. And he said, well, one of the employees went all the way up to the owner of the company and its a pretty big company. And was complaining about being videotaped and it's that person that I had dialogue with who sold us bought our stuff as number 3 copper, which nobody has ever heard of at least on RU-vid. There is a number 3 copper according to the grading scale. According to it's like sheet, real thin sheet. Copper, that's what was explained to us. Well, next video will be out in a minute and it's going to talk all about, and we actually interviewed the guy that's in charge of our our account so you should be interesting. They didn't want to burn a bridge they made. We. We made about 50 grand last month off the scrap metal. So that means they're making 50 to a 100 grand off of our scrap metal and all we're doing is bringing it to them. So I don't know with that math. I could get over a lot of things. Couldn't you so we'll see what happens? We're not stuck with this yard. They're just doing the best job here that we know of. In the sense that we don't have to be in the dirt, the mud like you would in a lot of the other yards.

@@removeitprosdemolitionstrange how much dramas going on at that yard lol most places don’t care bout recording. I agree, they seem clean, lotsa space, and pretty fast with what they do - so thats a plus. It’s just a shame that you gotta fight for whats fair. Interested to see how the future goes! Good luck 🤞 i wish I had those size drop offs lol do you quote your demo jobs with approx scrap returns factored in? Or is the scrap just a nice bonus for you guys?

@@removeitprosdemolitionright on, that’s awesome. I know a lot of contractors like plumbers that factor it into their quotes to try and be more competitive pricing wise, but also every plumbing company expects the employees to bring it all back to the office and save it for “the company xmas party” or some other B.S. reason lol like as if the company shouldn’t be paying for that kinda stuff out of pocket lol

I just love when they start shouting "it's all the same". I'm just a casual part timer, I take steel and non-ferrous to two different yards. My biggest non-ferrous load was $2K, I get $5-600 for a load of prepared steel on a single axle trailer.
