Also when you draw those lines (and hit D, do you have the round line settings turned on? or no?)

Thank you! I use a standard letter size 8.5 x11 artboard so it can be printed on any printer.

I pasted the photo into its own layer, lowered the opacity and locked the layer. I like to put the layer on top, since it is transparent I can see through it. This way I don't cover up the photo while I am drawing the flat.
