Capt. Bob Cottle of Channel 5, Boston gives a Sunday morning drawing lesson, from 1975. You can hear the "Magic Window" theme music at the end.
Besides giving drawing lessons, in a prior incarnation Capt. Bob presented illustrated adventures starring Jasper, Gramps, and Herkimer Kiwi. Here is is one example of the Ruff and Reddy Show from 1963, featuring Jasper in a typical predicament.

I loved Captain Bob! I loved to draw as a kid, animals, fish, dinosaurs, anything. I used to be transfixed watching how his rough lines eventually became so life-like. This is truly a wonderful childhood memory for me.

I grew up watching Capt. Bob on Boston TV. He actually lived up the road for awhile. These instructional programs always intrigued and inspired me as a child. No wonder I turned out to be a starving artist! Still think kids should learn basic drafting techniques, though, as Capt. Bob taught them.

As a kid, I remember this, as well as every other episode of this show. I was so mad when they stopped airing the show. I sent my drawings in and always hoped to see it hanging in his studio, as he would show them every once in awhile. Captain Bob taught me how to draw and educated me as well. I can hear his theme playing in my head now, as the show started and ended each week. Awesome, awesome memories!

Precious rare footage here. I always hoped to see one of my drawings when he showed viewer-submitted pieces. He created a love of drawing in many a kid, I imagine.

I used to love watching this early in the morning when I was a child in MA. I always marveled at how easily he made little decisive arcs when drawing.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I've looked for clips of this show for years because it was such an important part of my childhood. I used to get up before the sun every Saturday just to watch this show and draw with Captain Bob. I have very fond memories of those early mornings, silent house, all alone with my paper, pencil, and Captain Bob! I would love to see this show air again!

I started learning to draw recently at 48 years old. My husband remembered drawing with Capt. Bob when he was a kid. I had completely forgotten about this. It's a blast from the past and also an awesome tutorial. I can't wait to spend my day drawing a cat with a Capt. Bob. Also I find his Massachusetts accent comforting. Sounds like home.

This show for me is Martha’s Vineyard Memories of the early 1970s where I and my brothers grew up-before JAWS was filmed there and before all the tourists! This is where I first got my drawing lessons as a kid back in the early 70s and I became quite good, thanks to this man. It was called “The Nature World of Captain Bob” but everyone always called it “Drawing with Captain Bob.” This show was on early mornings before school @6:00 AM on Channel 56 out of Boston where the show originated. Each episode you’d learn to draw a new animal of some type-mammals, birds fish, reptiles, insects, etc. Captain Bob had such a soothing way about him for kids. He was the Bob Ross of Children’s Television. I’d get up early to sit in front of the TV with my paper and pencil. When I’d get to school I’d compare my drawing with those of the other two Artist/friends of mine in my grade at Tisbury School, Peter Hatt and Jeffrey Sayer who were both excellent drawers and would watch at their houses. Incidentally, this show absolutely influenced the creators of “Spongebob Squarepants” with the theme music and nautical scenery. Anyhow, I was always amazed by Captain Bob and how he methodically created a cool picture that I too could make in less than 20 minutes, and always with some Education on Nature. II was having Crab Bisque tonight and was reminded of this show. Thanks for uploading. 👨‍✈️ ⛵️

I was actually on the Captain Bob Show back in the early '60s. My mother sent in a few postcards with my information on it to the station (channel 5) and I got picked. As I recall there were only 5 or 6 kids on the show at one time. There were competitions amongst us kids, and I won the Bubble Blowing contest for having blown the biggest bubble! I won some sort of paint-by-number painting kit. The show was filmed on a Thursday afternoon and then televised early (7AM) on Sunday morning. I felt like a famous celebrity the following Monday morning when my classmates would tell me they saw me on TV. 😊 After the filming, my mother and I were walking out of the television studio when someone from the Bozo the Clown show came over and asked me if I wanted to be on that show which was about to start filming live! I said sure, and then I went on that show. They were like some 50 kids on that show and I guess I sort of got lost in the crowd. None of my friends and classmates could recall seeing me on that show. After the show I left disappointed because I didn't get picked for a chance to win any prizes. 🙁 All-in-all... it was a great learning experience!

I just read a lot of the replies below it is so funny to see that a lot of us shared the same events and feelings.......getting up early to watch rabbit ear television on Saturdays.....I always thought it was Sundays but oh well. Put on ch 5 and yes get our favorite Cereal before we would draw!!!! We had a roll of drawing like a Paper towel roll thick and my older sister would rip off a piece for me and her and she would eat tricks and I would eat frosted flakes or raisin bran. Or whatever I picked out in the supermarket that week. Probably the one with the prize. Thanks Capt. Bob!!!!

My mum still has a ton of my Capt. Bob drawings! After my uncle died recently they found a panda that I drew with him CB. I messed and erased his head so many times I had to put it on a separate sheet of paper, cut it out and scotch tape it onto the head. I looked forward to Capt Bob every Sunday am. 'Scuppah my uppahs' I remember from an extended episode about some cartoon character he created, which strayed from his typical animal and landscape subjects.

Ah, but - watch part 2! Now did Capt. Bob cheat and add stuff during the break? Not in this episode! What you really mean is, he was too fast and you couldn't keep up with him. Which was probably the case with a lot of frustrated kid artists.

@BlurryBear I think (can't prove) it was "scuttle me uppers" - that was what Jasper said in moments of stress, and he said it a lot, on the old Capt. Bob. pre-Nature World show. It's fisherman talk, I guess.

It was on at something like 5:30am on the south shore. I never really finished a drawing. He'd come back from commercial and the darn thing would be 75% done and you're like..what the heck! There was another show after it I think called Barbapapa. I specifically remember these blobs would come together to form the sail of a boat either during the intro or end of the show. Am I crazy? I can't find an english version of the show. then weekdays.. star blazers, force five, battle of the planets ;)

They sucked so bad that she didn't want to waste a stamp, but didn't tell me how awful they were so as to not hurt my feelings! LOL I still like to doodle......and I still suck big time at it. What's the name of the effect where the edges are duplicated vertically?
@jehugo66
@jehugo66 4 года назад
Etching, which is often combined with another similar style of shading: Crosshatching which is a crisscross pattern where thickness of the lines and varying distance between the lines creates darker and lighter shades. Both are used in lithographs-the common illustration print type seen during the civil war in newspapers then. Lithographs are scratched into a sheet of metal with a sharp stylus vs pencil on paper. Then ink is applied and prints on paper are made from the master plate. And then there’s Pointilism where shading is done with small dots varying in number and distance apart which also creates variations in shading. Impressionist Artists used pointillism with differing colors to create vibrant colors of different degrees. I learned that from Captain Bob 45 years ago👍🏻 How’s that for an Explanation? 😉
