In Dutch it is very easy to remember where the button needs to go. I learned "DROL" (turd) which stands for "Dames (Ladies) Rechts (Right) Over Links (Left). Once I learned that, I never forgot.

Hello zoe. I just started to take classes for fashion design and we have to sketch/draw blazer. Should I always start by drawing the body and then building from there? And should I trace the body first until I can do it on my own. Thank you for your time 😃

If you do another video on tailored jackets, one day, I'd love to see the differents types of shoulders. Cause I know how to sew/pattern them but not how to draw them on a 6/7 cms figure! :( Thanks, for all, Zoe, always learning with you! (I'm one of those who listen with a dedicated notebook, a coffee and my best pencils! ;))
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 7 лет назад
You're welcome! If you know how to sew different types of shoulders, I recommend you take photos of the jackets (on a person) and draw what you see as much and as often as you can. That's really the best way. Start drawing a little bigger, and shrink down as you improve.

You can, fashion rules aren't that strict anymore but if you're talking traditional tailoring, the only difference between womens and mens is the whole jackets closing left over right (men), right over left (women) thing.

Hi Zoe, do you have any book recommendations on learning how to draw basic clothing for beginners? These videos are very helpful but they seem more appropriate for people with some drawing/design experience. As a beginner with no drawing experience (apart from some female croquis drawing), what are the first steps to learning how to draw clothes? Thanks for your time!

Hey Zoe! Great vid! Question: I know very well that we aren't supposed to button the bottom button (unless you want to commit fashion suicide), but why do they put them there if we aren't going to use them? Is it just for like (God I can't believe I'm saying this) "fashion" reasons?
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 7 лет назад
Hahahahaha~ "fashion reasons" is totally valid! No, but seriously. It's about where you want the jacket break, how long of a lapel you want. Because the hems are pretty much set, you control the proportions of the jacket by adjusting the size of the opening by deciding on the # of buttons. You wouldn't want a jacket with a high break with a big buttonless empty space at the bottom half of the jacket. Looks weird. Make sense?
@yuvan1999
@yuvan1999 7 лет назад
Zoe Hong Yeah kind of lol...But I do agree that I would look kinda weird

Hi Zoe! Love Sunday Class and the timing works perfectly for the Middle East!! 😬😬 I have a couple of questions: 1) I know we should be making our own croquis, however, I don't anticipate that I will ever become an amazing illustrator such as yourself...any reccomendations for really good male fashion croquis sold commercially...is that even a thing? 2) I'm very interested in men's fashion and learnt a lot from the small tips you mentioned regarding dressing "etiquette", any tips on good resources for that kind of info? 3) I'm having trouble understanding how fitted tops should be illustrated on men (without making them look too feminine) and also how loose or tight the sleeves should be around the arms... I know it's a trial and error thing (practice...) but any "rules of thumb" in this regard? Greatly appreciated!
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 7 лет назад
1. I'm planning selling croquis downloads in my etsy store soon.
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 7 лет назад
2. I read a LOT. I read men's fashion blogs like www.fashionbeans.com and www.gentlemansgazette.com/clothing/. I also took costume history courses and worked as a men's fashion designer for old people who liked to teach me about how things were 'back in the day'. But try those blogs as a starting point, and pick up a book on men's costume history if you can.
@fahad7068
@fahad7068 7 лет назад
Zoe Hong can't wait!!! No pressure though 😂😂
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 7 лет назад
The rule of thumb for drawing anything is to look at what you want to draw. Go look at pics of men wearing the kind of shirts you have in mind. Maybe the whole shirt doesn't work but you like the way the sleeves are, or how the collar is. Observe and draw. Also, when I feel things look a little feminine, I use a sharper, more angular line. How tight or loose sleeves should be is up to you as a designer.
@fahad7068
@fahad7068 7 лет назад
Zoe Hong thanks for the blog suggestions! Will for sure follow...in terms of costume history, just bought (although very pricey) Farid Chenoune' s " A history of men's fashion" it's really beautiful and highly recommend it 👍🏾

one request please,If you can make a test paper to assess pattern drafting skills of a student or a designer ,also if someone is there for an interview as a fashion designer what would b your questionnaire for them? I would really want to give that test and go for the questionnaire to see if i qualify, so that i can assess myself,i would really appreciate if u could consider my request
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 7 лет назад
These are not things I'm an expert in and I don't teach things if I don't know very very well. Usually a patternmaker doesn't take a test but brings patterns they made and the clothing made using those patterns. The actual work is the most important. With fashion designers too. Their portfolio and how well they fit with the company is most important.

How do we derive the silhouettes? My name is SUR. I am a Fashion Design at Pearl Academy, India. Actually, it is still not clear to me as to how I can derive silhouettes after I am throught with my mood boards and concept board. For example, if my mood is all very dark and mysterious and the concept is "NOCTURAL'. The activities that happen at night. Like a spy, like a ninja, etc. Now what and how will I make my silhouettes. If I say, " MY SILHOUTTES ARE BOXY"... Now what? I hope you get what I am trying to ask!!! PS. I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS.
