I loved this first episode! As an aspiring OC Artist, hearing about that first tip (1:30) is refreshing to hear! People like you, Jazza, Yair Sasson, Tolg Art, and a few others are the kinds of people who inspired me a bit to try more mediums and whatnot! So thank you! Love your DBZ/Super drawings btw! Keep it up!! Hopefully I get to your level!

Don't forget LUCK. I have a sibling who acts for a living and this individual lives insanely well. Especially since "playing pretend" is all actors/esses actually do. However, I can't play pretend on that level at all and it is a REAL Skill Set that requires a definite propensity. That "TALENT" is actually very common. Never more so than in California's malange of fooderies whom employ servers or wait staff. LUCK plays an often overlooked and denied aspect of success. Sadly, most of success and wealth is about being in the right place ant the right time and speaking to the correct person. Talent, persistence, and passion mean everything as far a being successful goes... But for the most fame" success, etc. Its really just LUCK. Amendment: NOT LUCK. FATE. And we don't choose that" despite what Sarah Conner says... We accept fate, we can't change it or make it.

"Look for basic shapes" I would suggest to do so not only when youre doing art. If you're bored at a doctor's appointment, look around you and mentally dissect everything into their basic shapes. Study the people and things around you. You don't have to have a pencil in your hand to practice art. Get into the habit of seeing everything in its base form.

I would love seeing stuff like this because there's so much advice out there and so much of it crap, or only works for certain kinds of artists (like draw everyday is terrible advice for me, whenever i try i stay with it for a month and then don't pick up a pencil for another 3). Its great to see these vids from artists i know and trust. What's the best and the worst piece of advice youve ever had.

I literally was telling someone the skill thing yesterday and not a "talent" only thing. It's learnable for anyone and everyone. Three P's - practice, patience and perseverance. I hate when I'm told that... It feels undermining of all the hard work and time put in to learning about it and how to do it

Do you ever get tired of drawing one thing over and over? When I was younger, I was fairly good at drawing to the point I won several Best in Show awards (in 1st grade). The thing that kind of pushed me away from art for a while was everytime I was drawing or someone was looking at my drawings, they would want me to draw something. I'm from Kentucky, and besides chicken, we are known for horses. I did like horses as a kid but every single person wanted me to draw them a horse, a Pegasus, unicorn, etc. I hated drawing horses after a few months of this and just straight up refused to ever draw them again. I then went to Pokémon, which came out when I was in 3rd grade. I found my inspiration again and loved drawing those creatures to the point I could draw them anyway I liked. I have been drawing or creating ever since.

Re: reference, a lot of younger artists hang out together and tell each other that using reference is "cheating." They think that a *real* artist or a *better* artist just draws out of their head. Sure, it's great to have a broad mental library of objects, but you accumulate that by many years of drawing from reference, and you'll still often need reference for details or new-to-you stuff. The idea of reference being cheating is ridiculous, but if a group of artist friends all thinks that, they reinforce each other. Re: most of art being observation, I think it goes farther than just using reference. You can draw from reference and still make basic mistakes because you're not *looking.* I took a drawing class in college, and some people did that all the time. The instructor would set up a still life including, say, a big twisted rope, and half the class would draw the rope by drawing two curving but parallel lines. They'd look at it for a minute, then add some diagonals to show that it was twisting. But they didn't really *look* at it and see that it was two plies twisted around each other, in a way that made the whole profile bumpy, until it was pointed out to them. Then they were all, "Oh! Hey, yeah, you're right!" And then they could draw something that looked like a rope. Same with drawing a masonry brick; our instructor commented that most people drew it to look like a block of cheese -- perfectly smooth, no texture at all. People saw the basic shape and drew that, then wondered why it didn't look like the brick in the still life. How many less experienced artists will draw a spider with six legs because they didn't bother to count them, or draw an ant with six legs, but have them attached to the abdomen rather than the thorax because they didn't actually *look* to see where the legs attach? It's like Sherlock Holmes said -- "You see, but you do not observe." Artists need to learn to observe.

When I was in university for art, the biggest lesson I learned was "You are your worst critic" and that can cause a lot of people not doing something because they "aren't good" at it, or even not finishing something because it's not to their standard. We all have days where something is better or worse than we like, but use it as a learning experience or practice, instead of talking yourself down because it didn't turn out how you wanted.

My trouble with art is I don't have the patience to continue I will do weeks or maybe a month or so worth of drawing then post it on my Instagram page and then stop completely as if I don't exist! I also get scared of being creative most of my art work is using an existing art piece and me implementing my style I don't know if that is copying or not but I wish I could get out of this habit as I know this does not improve my skills as an armature Artist.

The prevalence of that question/statement about using reference or copying is probably an issue caused by the loons going onto art sites, videos and tutorials screaming their lungs out about never using reference because only amateurs use reference. Literally every great artist I can think of contradicts that and says use it. Yet still there are always the would be "enlightened" ruining proper advice for everyone. Great points, and love the energy you're always pushing out. It's because of you and Jazza that I found my interest in art again.

I get where you’re coming from, but I hate that this is even something that matters in the art community. It feels like a really small thing to get upset about. It’s not even really someone discrediting your work, it’s just a compliment when someone says you’re talented. By those standards, what is considered a talent then? I’m pretty sure anything that someone is good at requires some amount of work.

I am a middle-aged woman that has finally reconnected with my love to create art. I think that you were right on point, we may all start with a different degree of talent(of which I am not terribly blessed), but with tons of practice and patience with ourselves, we can keep improving. I do, fall into the trap of comparing how easy it all seems on the tutorials, but I have noticed WITH PRACTICE I have started to see much progress in my art. For me, I just love the process and it allows my mind to just be in that moment. I watched your tutorial video and it helped me with shading. I have referred to it more than once to practice shading.

I think, about the relaxing work environment thing, it kind of breeds shame about the environment many of us have no way of changing. For example, I'm somewhat severely disabled. I'm basically bedridden. I have to do art in bed, and am generally in quite a bit of pain unless I'm laying on my one side. So I have a pretty limited space to create. On top of that, I can't get up and clean so my space is pretty messy most of the time. My hubby is run off his feet with taking care of our son and I, so the cleaning kind of just doesn't happen to a degree anyone would call it anything but chaotic. And you know what? I shouldn't be made to feel selfconscious about that. I am, because there's this misconception that messy means dirty. I mean we also have roaches and mice, but it's not because we're dirty, it's because we live in an old apartment building that had these things long before we ever moved in. Because I'm disabled, and my hubby is too busy taking care of us to work, we get very limited funds from the government. Don't get me wrong, I'm so thankful to have anything at all! My point is, I live in an environment that most people would think is really bad, but I have no way of bettering the situation and that should be ok. Other than my disabilities (and Hubby's diabetes) we are all happy and healthy. That should be enough. On top of all of that, telling people they should have a "good" environment to create art will have them focusing on doing that first and if I were to take that seriously I know I would never do art because I would think that I had to make my space calm and whatever first. It just puts another hurdle between now and art lol. I hope that makes any sense.

I'm in the same position myself, I am in bed most of the time and my flat is a chaotic mess. I have to accept the chaos of a work environment or I don't have the energy to create because I'm tired and pained from tidying.

@@DystopianOverture exactly! I know he didn't mean any harm, and honestly it's not terrible advice, especially for people who lean towards OCD like tendencies. It's just also a little on the ableist side for so many disabilities and disorders. The spoon theory works perfectly here: if I use all my spoons cleaning, I'll never have one for actually doing the art. For people like us, it only needs to be clean enough. Anyway, I'm sorry to hear you have it rough. I hope today is better than yesterday. ♡♡

My biggest pet peeve is when folks tell me 'wow you're so talented' or I see them saying 'wow they are so talented' with artists that are very skilled. I see people using it often two different ways: to tell people they themselves don't have a talent for art and therefor will never be able to do it, or to try and de quantify all the hard work an artist goes through to get to the level they are at. Examples of the second are usually something like "Oh they are just talented so of course their works are great". It's so annoying! Art is a SKILL. Even if you have a higher learning curve than others in it, it doesn't mean that others cannot learn it, so it really irritates me when people try to say things like 'well they are just good at it because they were born good at it'. Like... no... it doesn't work that way LOL.

For "Know your medium" I agree with the yes and no response and I'd put it like this: Use mediums you don't know and play with them. When you're comfortable and have at least a base knowledge of it, _then_ do pieces with it you're more serious about. And to cap that off, ALWAYS test everything together before making that more serious art. If you know how they work together, you won't run the risk of thinking the mistakes are your fault and giving up on the medium because you're no longer enjoying it, or (as was in my case with trying to blend on Canson XL watercolour paper) being extremely hard on yourself over it.

I never understood how some people think that drawing a picture from looking at a picture/reference is somehow "cheating" or "copying". If you sit down at the park, and draw a tree in front of you...that's not "copying", right? So why is it if you take a picture of it, then go home, then draw that picture of a tree...now it's somehow, magically "copying"? .. I think this relates to a combination of ignorance and "naivety" (re: just being young/unexperienced). It's why you see a lot of "draw-ma", ;) , around tween/teen drawing sites about "he stole my style!", or "she is copying my OC idea!" ...they just don't understand how trademark and copyright laws work. But that's a WHOLE other kettle of fish!

Ikr. When I and another artist discovered that our OCs were pretty much identical, we just laughed and joked that they must be twins. Sometimes ppl think alikeand draw the same idea without knowing. I think even the names of our characters were the same but spelled differently. Only major difference was the eyecolour. Nowdays, if someone use a picture they found on the internet and use it for reference/copy it, they get pretty much attacked and accused for tracing and stealing someones art. There is even an IG account that hunt down young artists (most under 15) and accuse them for art theft. Telling them to credit the artist they traced the art from and to stop claiming the drawing as their own. They even refuse to tell who that artist is. The account then post screenshots of the conversation and rediculate the poor kids, as well as those who dontagree with the account. And the art are often disney and cartoon characters. That account is the reason Im scared of posting some of my drawings of anime and cartoon characters.

I loved drawing cartoon characters as a kid. My what I “wanted to be when I grew up” was an animator for Disney. My friends loved my work and showed it to one of my art teachers in high school (UK). She put it down. I did go on to take Art & Design at GSCE and eventually A-level (night school) but I was always disillusioned by the teachers words. I now do art purely for my own enjoyment (art journaling) but I hear a lot of similar stories of people who didn’t do art for years due to harsh criticism. One thing I never understood were the people that gatekeep referencing! I remember in high school I had a pretty good teacher (for my one class), and the final project was to take a page from a magazine, cut it vertically into three strips and then enlarge them by drawing/painting them on *huge* sheets of paper that would be hung next to each other. We used the grid method and literally copied the image by hand. Of course, that was 30 years ago, and attitudes change. I also tried my hand at the Art Instructions Schools (twice) and they have at least one section on the grid method, and at least one other section on drawing from references. I just don't get people that get all butthurt when an artist uses references. You try to catch me without reference material! Not gonna happen (for the most part, anyway)! I love google. I don't know what I did back before the internet! Oh right, I didn't make 2D art. And even then, the art I made was usually the result of referencing books! 🤣 You should make more "reaction" videos. I like those. Thank you for sharing!

More wholesome doggo content! And I loved your discussion of "talent." I've watched your drawing video, and tonight it clicked that what you're doing when searching for the basic shapes in what you are drawing is what we call "decomposition" in introductory programming classes--breaking the task down into the smallest parts. That "aha" made me think about the drawing/shapes thing in a slightly different way, and it makes more sense now. In my oh-so-copious free time, I'll have to try watching that video again and drawing along. Cheers!

I think this whole concept of answering these questions is pretty good, as I think so many people are worried about a lot of things and they just quit. My personal problem is usually to use references. I don't know why, but than I try drawing something and it turns out pretty bad 😅 so I should really try to use some guide. Although I had the same answers to these questions as you ☺️☺️

As a kid I used to draw a lot, but then I started to compare myself with others and felt like I wasn't good enough and that it was pointless so I stopped. Took around 20 years before I decided to really get back into it, and I remember watching that video from you when you were talking about seeing shapes and all, it was a tip that really helped me improve, so thanks a loads. Watching you color has really helped my coloring as well, and I got some Winston & Newton markers the other day as they were on sale, glad I did. ;) Keep up the awesome videos. Ps: I'd like to see a 10 style of one of the TMNT.

On the subject of referencing. A fabulous drawing teacher of mine said this. If I asked you to draw the back end of a horse, you'd know roughly what it would look like but when it comes to putting pen to paper? Hmmmm. where exactly does the tail sit, how big is the rump, what direction do the leg bend? Unless you've been drawing horses since you were a child it's not gonna work. Don't look inside your head (she said) there's nothing in there! so PUT something in there. Draw a horse's arse from a reference. Click SAVE. By the way I like your craziness.

I agree with everything in this video. I think why many people are saying that drawing is at least 50% Observation. It mostly because some artists will trace the artwork, add a few new touches on it, and call it their own. Let me use Butch Hartman as a example. He got caught tracing a ton of artwork and a lot of people were not happy. I think that’s why a lot of people are asking that question.

heh if art wasn't a skill, then I wouldn't have improved as much as I have -- thanks, largely in part, due to artists like you, Mr. ArtAttack. I just have fun. My first sketches were on a lined notepad with a pen from work, and... boy I want to burn that book. But I keep it to show myself how far I've come. I have fun - you make art fun. Your channel, Jazza's, Drawfee - thank you :) I like the video, i'll watch more like it.

1. I mean, you first need enough motivation to make your environment motivational, lol 2. Know your medium. but never let that paralyse you. You dont have to know everything about it before you start. because it can get very confusing. Different brands and surfaces work differently. Every artist uses the same media differently. So yeah, get some basic knowledge and then start working with them. because the best way to know your medium is to work with it. Know the rules, but dont be restricted by them. Sometimes knowing which rules to break is what leads to developing new ideas and artforms. 3.I disagree, you can grow your skill but you can also grow your talent. Talent isnt just for example, how well you draw. It is about stuff like picking correct colours, artistic interpretation etc. How you apply what you know to what you are doing. You can always learn how to apply yourself better, acquire new skills to showcase your talent better and create new stuff. For example, you could read and discuss literature and create surrealist paintings based on that. Picasso's cubism was based on Einstein's theory of relativity. he experimented with his talent and creativity to develop a whole new kind of talent. Im sorry, I know what I am talking about but it is kind of hard to explain. 4. practice doesnt help you improve at art. MINDFUL practice does. if you keep practicing but you arent mindful, all that practice will help embed bad habits in your process. On the other hand, if you are smart about it, you can practice less hours and get a lot more out of it. 5. Observation isnt just referencing. it is about everything. observing the process of other artists and implementing those. not copying their artwork. but eg, I can see that Da vinci used very thing glazes to paint his paintings and the soft edge effect it gave them. I can use that to cause hue shifts and soften edges in my painting where I think it will create more interest or depth. I could observe strong contrast in lighting creates drama and tension, observe how an artist uses that technique and implement in my original art where I feel it will help. and so on. Wont make me anywhere near Da Vinci but will broaden my skillset, understanding of art, and help me express ideas better. it will make me a better artist than yesterday. it is also about observing your own progress - in one artwork and overall as an artist. Develop what works for you, improve what doesnt, find out what you struggle with and find and learn skills to help you with that. Also refers to observing the world for ideas and inspiration.

I don't know that "50% seeing" is strictly about copying. I think it's about cultivating the habit of seeing details in the world so you can translate that into your art. Example -- observing how objects interact with different types of light, where shadows fall, and so on, such that you have a basis for applying that to your work.

I think "be consistent with your style" is more for selling... if I have an Etsy store and I'm consistent with the products I'm producing, I can build up a client base. But if I'm more random with my art, I'm going to have a hard time retaining clients.

Art very subjective. It can viewed and created in so many different ways that defining it by a set of rules is rubbish. There no set way on it. You can copy someone elses methods but the outcome will always be different. So to compare your work with someone else's is not the right way to improve. It's a skill. Try and try again get better there no failing in art but only improvements. I have to say one of my own pet peeves within art, is when people find out you can draw. "Omg you're really good at drawing, Can you draw me?" Not everyone can draw atomically correct figures everyone have or will develop their own unique style. For me I can draw landscapes in biro and they come almost 1 to 1 but struggle drawing people or animals so a took a more stylistic approach when I tackle these.

I think to learn is very good not only referencing, but copying (not tracing), if you only do original characters it's like making a game, some bugs turn into features: "isn't that arm way bigger than the other?", "he's single for a long time..."

Id love to be able to draw but found I can only draw when I’m in a certain mental state and even then its something really specific that I know I want to do. Outside of that, it looks like a child drawing lol. 🤦‍♀️ the points you made were very true though.

Stick to one style ...I have one particular style in my original characters but I want to work on that style and develop more into the styles of other Manga artists i see and cartoonists as well and make them look better and more realistic looking than flat and little to no shading. That requires skill going back to the first part of art being a skill. Talent is something you are born with, where as skill is developed over time using that talent.

I am probably in the minority on this and its your channel but I hope you do not do this content too much because I used to be subscribed to Mohammed Agbadi(probably spelled that wrong) but he started doing this all the time because he got more views and now doesn't do any art anymore and had to unsubscribe. Again just my hope that these types of videos are spaced out and not the norm but again just my opinion and you have to do what you gotta do for your channel and I respect that.

My reaction to your reaction as it goes... Art is both a Talent and a Skill. Its a talent that can be improved with practice and there for makes it a skill. No always trey to do different things and explore art in all forms. Art should not be restricted. You should know your medium, for your best results. ( you are spot on here ) Practice but keep it fun, because if its a chore or work you'll end up hating it and not want to do it any longer. I was taught by my mother to sketch basic shapes to make people in various poses and then draw in details after, this for me is the most basic of skills to practice. I agree with the point made here as well, good job, but you can also draw from your imagination, but ref. material is always helpful. My wife is a programmer, and they have a rule they teach in collage, that you take and use other peoples code to make your code its a copy and paste kinda thing, art is the same in some ways. you draw from ref. You dont have to have a studio... but it can be helpful for some to have a place to get away and concentrate on your task at hand. Hey thanks for your other video in this shirt and hat about your struggles, I dont think many can understand it unless they too deal with it. So thank you for being a voice and open about your condition and struggle. You are loved and cared for, this you know because you alluded to it in your video. Be well.

My least favorite art advice is "don't draw what isn't there" aka "don't draw what you can't see" like if an eye is covered in shadow don't draw the eye. I feel if your skill is there that's fine, but as advice for a growing artist and a learning artist, not the best. If I'm struggling to lay down shadow on a shape or to a detail(which is almost every time), I will draw the detail so that I can make the shadow or light hit it correctly or at least the idea of what is supposed to be there. I feel like "don't draw what isn't there" is more of a goal, than actual advice. Do things as an artist that help you as an artist, if you gotta draw an eye just to cover it up go for it, if you gotta erase 100 times, go for it. When you are confident enough and are comfortable taking a shortcut, then take the shortcut. But don't be afraid to break things down if you are stuck, you aren't going backwards if you draw what you can't see, you are taking the time to make sure it looks right in the end.

I think having a good art environment to create in is very important. Surrounding yourself with art or objects that spark you creativity and having a relaxing space to work in really helps to remove a lot of the outside pressures of life that can interfere with creating art. That said, I currently paint in a shared living room with the painting resting on my knees because it is the only space I have available. Not ideal, but if you can't have an ideal workspace, you make your space work.
