That fact that they - presumably David - attributed "no evidence, no marriage" to Columbo is perfect, because I have a headcanon that Columbo's wife doesn't actually exist and even if she does, 90% of the things he says about her are made up. I'm pretty sure that he both talked about children and the fact that they didn't have any children in different episodes. (There's a spin-off show that feature Kate Mulgrew as Mrs. Columbo; in that one, she has a daughter and mentions her husband, but he never shows up. That is, to me, an alternate reality where Columbo doesn't exist and his wife does.)

It was warning him to not look too closely into why Cass is the most zealous about following his no kill rule out of anyone he's taken under his wing. The reason is because she was raised to be an assassin since birth and when she made her first kill at the tender of age 8, she realized what death was and vowed to never do it again.
