About This Video
----------------------------
This is the 2nd lesson video in the new "Art Journey Series book 1". The first book of 3. The book of vision. This is the introduction for anyone out there interested in becoming an artist.
In this video I talk about Blind Contour Drawing method which is an essential technique introduced by Kimon Nicolaïdes in The Natural Way to Draw, and it is further popularized by Betty Edwards as "pure contour drawing" in The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.
This method will teach how to be patient with your drawing and focused with the way you perceive your reference. If you practice this method it will make your drawings more precise, focused and correct. Once you master this technique you will see your object as a group of lines and forms instead of a memorized object that your logical brain will try to finish for you everytime you try to draw it.
This video is targeted at absolute beginners who just took their first step into the art world.
Hope you find it helpful :)

Hi Salem . I only discovered your channel couple of weeks ago, you have some amazing content. I already gave you feedback on the gesture peanut vid, which was superb. This one on blind contour has really impressed. In the past and I still use loomis which is great, however even getting close to realism in portraits, it’s difficult with the finer details. I’ve been on blind contours for a few days and already find it staggering how with perseverance and working blind in this way you can really start to capture true realism and sketches take on a real flow rather than being not quite real , if you follow me. It amazes me that head position angles , proportion and placement of features, eye and brow shapes, particularly lips and chin, become much more accurate. I’ve even tried it on a male lions face with good outcome. I’m gonna stick with this method for a while, hope you don’t think I’m going doo lally! Many thanks for this introduction to this way of approaching it.

lol I know the feeling, I have been there myself. from the outside this method looks silly and doesn't make sense, but what we don't realize when we start up is how important it is. it is actually training your hand-eye coordination to become more accurate every time you do it. focusing on just a line instead of a whole portrait and following the line along for 5-10 mins train our brains to focus on exact details instead of guessing where these details "should be". Its shutting down the logical part of the brain and just focusing it on pure sighting. I still remember my Eureka moment when I did this exercise for about 6 months, the portrait I drew afterward blew my mind. it was the first time ever that my Portrait actually looked real. all thanks to this exercise. I can not stress how important it is to do this every time you think you are losing focus of the lines. Even doing it once or twice before starting your drawing session will result in amazing drawings afterward.

Merry Christmas Salem, I'm glad you're back. about the video, the blind method is to be done looking at the drawing and on another paper currently drawing without looking at what you are drawing? or, looking at what you are currently drawing without looking at the reference on the side? I thank you for your attention, and I hope that 2021 will be a great year for you and your family.
@SalemShanouha
@SalemShanouha 3 года назад
No Blind Contour drawing is you looking at the reference the WHOLE time without looking at what you are drawing. your eyes need to be fixated on the outline of the object you are drawing as if you have your pencil on top of it. Thats why I started with the tracing first. Blind Contour is basically remote tracing of an object. Its a method to deprogram your mind from seeing objects as objects into seeing objects as lines and forms. This way you no longer complete the drawing from your mind without looking at the reference while drawing. So put the reference away from your paper you are drawing on and look at it while drawing. You have to be slow otherwise you gona be all over the place, thats where the timer comes in. If you have 10 min to do it, you will have to go slow. Without a timer you would be done in 10 seconds. Hope that helped :). Thank you for all your wishes and I wish the same to you and your family :)

Hey so I been following your Andrew Loomis method and I want to get to the next step where you draw the bones Im doing tradional art's I was wondering would I just learn how to draw lightly or just start with the skeleton
@SalemShanouha
@SalemShanouha 3 года назад
If you are aiming to draw poses from reference I would go with drawing more gestures, poses, portraits from reference. If you want to start drawing your OWN poses from imagination, then go into Anatomy and study the skeleton and the muscle structure.

@@SalemShanouha thanks for commenting. I would like to reiterate that I still want to learn the mankin figure first before doing poses .Because I don't feel confident I have mastered it. So I was wondering for someone who uses a pencil. should I do the first less detailed mankin lightly. then have the darker more skeleton mankin over that. I hope that makes sense

Without rushing my traced image using a transfer paper comes out pretty good. But it only takes me a minute or two for a small image. Should It take me longer?
@SalemShanouha
@SalemShanouha 3 года назад
Remember that the way the drawing look isnt the goal here, its focusing on the line you are drawing. So if it took 5 min and it look worse its fine, the important part here is to see how long can you last focusing on the line without getting distracted. If it took you 2 min to trace, try it without tracing and see how long it takes. anywhere between 5-10 min is good but it also depends on the drawing you are copying

I really love doing blind contours , I can do them all they tbh , they are like full of suprise for me. Because I don't look at the drawing and when I am done , and I find out is it good or bad , I like that suprise alot tbh , I have been a gamer all life , I think my hand eye coordination is good. My blind contours are good when I do them with pencil and paper , but when I do digitally they are bad , alot of times I end up going out of the canvas
@SalemShanouha
@SalemShanouha 2 года назад
The transition from paper to digital takes a while, I remember I was doing some amazing portraits on paper and couldnt even do a straight face in digital. Took me about a year or so to be as comfortable with digital media. For this exercise try to zoom out and draw on a smaller scale, if you are zoomed in and going for long strokes you gona eventually runout of canvas. So try to make a smaller version of what you are trying to draw. Hopefully this way you wont be going out of canvas. But hey even if you did its fine, its not about drawing something cool its more to focus on the lines and follow it no matter what :)
