Hi all! Today's video is all about oil pastels! I'm a complete beginner to using oil pastels in my work so this was a great way to experiment and use them with mixed media. I also test out two brands, the higher end Senneliers and the Pentels. I compare them in this video and talk all about their similarities and differences, as well as sharing swatch tests and comparing their opacity, line thickness and smudge test. I hope you find it interesting and helpful! Like I said, I'm a complete beginner but I hope you enjoy watching and do let me know any tips down below! Katie x

Mungyo gallery soft oil pastels are the happy medium between sennelier and pentel they pretty much have all the benefits of both if you want to give them a try.

The neocolors are great too but they are much pricier. Same with holbien. Mungyo are far more affordable. For pastel colors paul rubens have a great set too which are pretty similar to mungyo but they don’t layer quite as well as mungyo. Thanks for the video I hadn’t thought to incorporate them w gauche I think I’ll be giving that a go.

I've heard really good things about the Mungyos! I really love neocolors and they're definitely my go-to though I don't think the texture is as close to oil pastels! Thanks so much for sharing, really good to hear your thoughts! And I definitely recommend trying with gouache, it worked better than I expected 😊

@@KatieMoody oops my mistake I meant to write neopastels, the neocolors are great too though. Caran Dache’s oil neopastels are great, very pigmented but also pricy. I’ve tried a lot of brands in the last year and mungyo is the overall best value for the money. If you get them make sure to pay attention to make sure you get their gallery soft oil pastel line. They have a regular oil pastel line too which is pretty much as hard as the pentels and I didn’t really like it personally.

Sealing: I have actually read that in terms of oil pastels and sealing you should expect them to behave like oil paints. Meaning you need to let them dry first and then spray the fixative. However, the oil pastels will never be 100% dry, so you should expect some “softness” even after letting them dry. Hope this helps anyone who reads this!
@KatieMoody

Thank you so much for sharing! And great advice about them never being 100% dry - I think that their texture is really unique and so it's important to know how to deal with that 😉

@@KatieMoodyJust use fixative, remember we paint oil pastels usually in thin layers on ungessoed paper.

Oil pastels particularly the Sennelier need a 2-3 days to “dry” a bit between layers. That’s what I’ve observed during my time using them. This I’ve applied to both high end and low end😊 brands. So depending on what you’re trying to achieve, I’ve found that working in more than one sitting really helpful. You also need a VERY LIGHT HAND to achieve the blending and creating more colours, particularly with sennelier Loved the video as I always do. Thanks so much for sharing it. With respect to sealing, leaving the senneliers, pastels to dry out for a week or more if you can manage helps a lot. It would make it more receptive to the fixative. I’ve also used matte medium to seal depending on the piece I’ve made.

Thank you so much for sharing this info, Kimberly! It didn't even occur to me that they'd need time to dry but it makes sense! I agree about the light hand for the Sennelier, they were soooo much softer than I expected them to be, especially as I got the Pentels first and that was my only comparison. Thank you for watching and for sharing your knowledge 🥰

@@KatieMoody oh same for me. It has taken me literally years of persistence with them to understand how they work. I’ve used Holbein student grade pastels and Sakura expressionist (I love these) and I have taken quite some time trying to figure out how to approach them. This month I’ve picked them up again, trying not to be too precious. I’d recommend you try doing a Colour chart with them much like you’d do with watercolor on some rough pastel paper or a rough texture paper use a very light hand, just lightly pass the pastel on the paper one Colour over the other and then you’ll see the blending I’m talking about. Thanks for replying!!! I’m hoping to join your patreon group this year.

I have a few Pentel, Sennelier, and a few Caran D’ache Neopastels. The Neos are, for me, like the best of both worlds, but honestly, especially for the cost and for how I use them, the Pentels do well!

I agree Julie, I think Neocolors will always be my go-to! 🧡 I was really impressed by how well the Pentels did considering the price 😊

I love the pentels - i find that they do most of the heavy lifting for me because they're so affordable i used them for the first layers. I use Mungyo gallery artist's soft oil pastels, Paul Rubens Haiya, Neopastels and Sennelier pastels for the layers that follow and usually the Sennelier are just the last touches. Interestingly I dont reach for the Neopastels nearly as often as i thought i would. I really like the Haiya and Mungyo pastels in terms of enjoyment overall though.

5:37 fantastic video, as for Sennelier softness, (1) just use the other end of the stick to get thin lines. (2) use a piece of paper, a ruler or paper stencils for sharp edges. I learned a number of techniques from Tim Fisher's excellent oil pastel book.
@KatieMoody

Thanks so much! Using the paper or stencils is a great trick for sharp edges, thanks for sharing! I'll look up Tim Fisher's work

Great comparison, Katie! The Sennelier has more oil and so needs more drying time… leaving it to dry for a day or two before sealing increases the fixative’s efficacy.
@KatieMoody
@KatieMoody Год назад
Oh that makes a lot of sense, I had no idea! Thanks so much for sharing Arati - I'll re-do the fixative now it's had some time to properly dry!

You’re comparing kids supplies and premium artists supplies. No contest. That said, I rarely use oil pastels but when I do, I usually use the cheapest set I can find in the store. Then I can’t find them a year later and buy another set. It’s too messy for me
@KatieMoody
@KatieMoody Год назад
For sure, but apart from the blending I thought the Pentels really held their own, I was impressed! I love that they are so reasonably priced - so many art materials aren't sadly. It took me a while to accept the messiness! 😂
@amyx231
@amyx231 Год назад
@@KatieMoody I think it’s more the risk of fugitiveness that differentiates artists and student/kids supplies. Yes, pigment load, but also the pigments themselves.

@@KatieMoody I'd be curious to know if the Sennelier have the same rubber smell that the Pentel do. It might just be the smell of "oil" hence oil pastel but I couldn't get past the feeling like I was playing with tires at an auto store using the Pentels and had to donate my small set right after purchase even though I loved the colors!

A better tittle for this video could've been, mixed media with gouache and oil pastels.... or how to integrate oil pastels to your gouache painting... cause this is not a Pentel vs Sennelier comparison, persé. But dont get me wrong, it was a very interesting video. ❤

That's true, it's more about techniques with mixed media rather than an in-depth comparison! Thank you for the feedback 😊
