I have been asked which wax crayons I use. They are Sakura Expressionist Cray-pas. the Blick page is: www.dickblick.com/products/sakura-cray-pas-expressionist-oil-pastels/ For accents, I use a stronger crayon, I think it is Van Gogh but there are many even Sakura makes one. Any questions, please feel free to ask.

I've been using crayons for 65 years...and in this short video you have shown me so many artistic alternatives for how to use them properly! Thank you Marc. I have always loved the " Put down a colourful base, cover it with black and scrape through the picture" method...I still remember that from school. Tell me Marc, do you seal your crayon works????

Glad I could help. I don't fix my crayon drawings. I wrap them in glassine. Do you fix them? What is your experience? Please feel free to contact me again with questions or your own experiences. I am interested in new approaches, too.

Great idea using white for the initial layer! I like that you can scrape back to the highest key. No dark staining of the paper with other colours. I dont have crayons but i imagine this white layer would work with oil pastels too. Thank-you for sharing.
@marcshanker
@marcshanker Год назад
If you try it, please let me know your experience. Also, as far as I know, oil pastels have more oil than wax crayons. That might require a different type of paper, and because they are tackier, a different way of working.
@raerae6422
@raerae6422 Год назад
@marcshanker the white underlayer worked brilliantly with my oil pastels. I had a blast scraping back in. Thanks for the idea. Surprisingly, the oil doesnt seperate, halo or seep through the paper. Even when ive used cheap kids scrapbook paper. No tearing happens either because it glides so smoothly. I havent tried the super buttery ones like Sennelier or the "extra soft" versions some other brands make. They might need a specific paper.

@@raerae6422 Thank you for the report. What weight of paper are you using? Is it cover stock or a ribbed paper?
@raerae6422
@raerae6422 Год назад
@marcshanker i mainly use up old sketchbooks. They are around 110gsm. Not ribbed paper, not toothy, not super smooth or shiny. Sorry, thats pretty unhelpful. Im not an expert. I dabble in most mediums. I guarantee youll find a great youtube video by someone knowledgeable on perfect substrates. You will also come across some other application techniques like impasto with palette knives, using oil paint mediums, blending with the warmth of your fingertips, etc.

I remember doing this in childhood. It was a lot of fun and sort of a fad at my school for a while. I’m sure your materials are far superior, but even Crayolas worked to get this effect. 😊

Hi Marc, just found your video and love the idea of using wax crayons. Do you have a favorite brand? Please let me know. Thanks and I love your work!
@marcshanker
@marcshanker Год назад
Hi Linda, thank you for your supportive comments. For most of my drawings, I use Sakura Cray-pas Expressionist Oil Pastels. You can choose from a great many colors, and buy bulk. They are excellent quality. However, sometimes I want an additional accent so I use a better quality, stronger crayon called Van Gogh Oil Pastels. I bought a large box of many colors. As I explained in my video, the choice of paper, hot or cold press, is important. You might buy a pad of each and try both ways. Personally, I prefer hot press because the crayon shines off the paper surface. I hope this helps. You can always contact me again for more info. I am also available for studio visits if you are in NYC. Good drawing!

This is great. Are you using an artist grade crayon? This is a new area of art for me!
@marcshanker
@marcshanker Год назад
Yes, i am using Sakura Crayolas and then a stronger crayon for accents. I buy the colors by the dozens because I build up the colors. Also I work fairly large. I go through a lot of crayons so I prefer a less expensive brand. Try the less expensive brand and see how you like them before spending a lot of money. Also how you will use them. Take a look at my website for examples how I use them. Marcshanker.com

Brilliant - you have given me a new thing to play with in my art journal. Thank you! Does the quality of the crayon matter? Would the inexpensive ones, like Crayola be ok or do we need better quality ones?

@@marcshanker many thanks for your swift reply. Since I asked, I had actually read through some more comments and saw you had told people what you use - apologies for making you repeat yourself. 🙂I am going to have a look in my local art shop to see what they have. I am really excited about this - I really needed something new to do in my art-journal. Have a lovely day. 🙏

@@RainbowLane No problem. Happy to help. One of the most important variables is the paper which I mention in the video.
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane Год назад
@@marcshanker yes I’m starting to really get that - my art journal is a bound generic album, not good paper but it takes acrylic well. I just had a play with some wax pastels I had in my art/craft stash and realised how awful the paper is - but no matter, I ripped the page out, tore it up and I will use the pieces in a collage. Nothing is ever a failure or wasted is it? And I enjoyed the time spent trying your lovely technique. I will get some decent hot press paper and better wax crayons. Thank you. 🙏

It is better to do bad work on good paper than to do good work on bad paper. In fact, good paper helps one do better work (I have found).@@RainbowLane
