This story is one of a short series featuring Loveday Brooke, one of several "rivals to Sherlock Holmes" who featured in British periodicals in the 1890s and early 1900s. She is almost certainly the first professional female detective in English fiction, and the first to be created by a female author. Thank you for all your research, storytelling, & a/v production of quality Victorian writers❣️🎁🪆 🧵🪡📖 The research to bring us these unique works! Like other listeners, I too AM SUCH A BIG FAN❣️🎁🎉
This may be one of the first authors I've heard that I'd actually consider as "rival" to Doyle's Sherlock Holmes works. Excellent story. Beautifully read. Thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable hour Simon Stanhope!
I look forward so much to your uploads Simon! I’ve now listened to every story you have narrated. Your narration is very good & your voice is so easy to listen to. Thank you ♥️🇦🇺✌️
@@BitesizedAudio Music to my ears! Even more so after January 1st when most of the holidays are over and we're all snowed in, it will be nice to look forward to an exceptional short story! Thank you Simon!
Aww flip - the glorious Loveday! I missed this dropping earlier ... Thank you for creating this. You are the best at finding unknown and obscure stories from the Edwardian and Victorian era and interpretating them in the most creative manner. You're talented and hard-working and I'm so pleased I found this your channel. 👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌👏👏👏
@@jameshughes525 Yes. I want to have nonconsensual * relations with stories told in this channel through brute force. …cause it’s so beautiful that I can’t help myself. Allow me to draw you a picture: 🎇(. Y .) 🥸😭🥳
How wonderful - a short story from the Victorian era about a "troublesome and undesirable suitor". Even better his name was Danvers. Had Danvers been a "bounder" or a "cad", I am sure Miss Pirkis would have arranged for Loveday Brooke to foil the union. I have no doubt the happy couple lived happily ever after! Well performed Simon!
A little stressful that a young woman couldn't pick her own husband and had to go to such lengths to marry who and when she wanted. Even down to having her letters read by others.
In hospital Simon! Thank you so much for this- this picture is of my neighbour (bed) and she is 91 with more energy than me!! Love this author which I remember because of the effort you make by using pictures as I never forget a Face. Another reason to ADORE you and this channel! You take care of yourself Simon and thank you for all your blessings to keep me entertained here in Charing Cross hospital 🏥❤️🩹😇
So sorry to hear you're in hospital Maria, I hope you get well soon. Thanks so much for your lovely comments, I remembered this character was one of your favourites. All best wishes to you - and your energetic neighbour!
@margaretwood7135 It's just an option for paying a subscription to support the channel via RU-vid, there are a few different levels you can choose, starting from £1 (or $1) a month, for those who'd like to - you'll see options if you click the Join button. But no obligation, of course - simply subscribing, listening, liking and commenting all helps to support me to keep going. Many thanks!
Thank You *Simon* for bringing these stories from the dusty shelves into the light of the Internet; otherwise, we ... most of us anyway, would likely never know of their existence. I only have a BA Degree nothing higher, but never heard of most of these more obscure ones you have on your channel. It is good to have a female detective & author who wrote her in as female. I think she was beyond her time in her modern vision w/strong women characters.
I have a Master's in English Literature, have been a professor, and have not heard of them. These are not in the Canon. There are so many good works not covered in academic studies as they are considered pop or pulp fiction I guess. Lots of these can be found on Project Gutenberg, works that are no longer under copyright. Greetings from "Mayberry," North Carolina.
Just wondering what kind of "fraud" in a legal sense was perpetrated by the maid and her mother that would land them jail since the heroine herself stays under false identities in people's homes in almost every story...
Ah yes, the clues are all there with this one... I think the first time I read it I guessed part of the solution fairly early on, but not all of it and I got some details wrong. But the pieces fall into place as the story progresses
You sound like the voice I remember from the old Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons. I think it was someone narrating a cartoon story in-between the Rocky and Bullwinkle clips. The voice was irritating then and for some reason still seems odd.
It's just truly funny that the author would use 'that' word in its outburst connotation rather than anyone's sexual connotation. I hesitate, in my writing, to use words with somewhat duplicituos definition. It's just the choice that I make. Thanks Simon for such great reading.
Simon Sir, listened to all you are magnificent!!!!! Please could you say what those tunes are that you play....both charming. One is music box single notes and the other is tune like an old-fashion waltz? I am a 78 years senior citizen, bed ridden. Your reading selections provide me with so very much pleasure and knowledge, million thank you s..
Thank you so much for your kind comments. The two pieces you mention are both by Esther Abrami, the first piece is called 'Remembering Her' and the second one is called 'Esther's Waltz'. Glad to know you enjoy them!
I know this isn't part of your stated repertoire, but I'd love to hear your voice and intonation telling the Lovecraft tales, The Call of Cthulhu, and The Shunned House. If you ever decide to expand.
Marvellous as always! Thank you Simon for your wonderful narration! Loveday got to the bottom of it, but certain Victorian attitudes took a bit of a tumble in the face of…well, perhaps more “modern” sensibilities! Shocking! 😉
Wonderfully narrated as usual. I was very amused as to Loveday's description of the house as reflecting early Victorian furnishing as somewhat less than stylish and drawing a comparison of the maid to the furnishing as somewhat faded and sour. Very enjoyable story. Mr Hawk was also amusing in his worry about his wife's disapproval and his total bewilderment regarding the situation.
Well, today RU-vid was Ruined. It took me from *:00 AM to 4:35 PM to get signed in and to watch your videos. Now the Ads cannot be ignored, and I am in Dismay
Found myself "unsubscribed" somehow today though I've enjoyed your content consistently for years. I'd heard you warning this was happening to subscribers but this is the first time I've experienced it first hand...
That's very kind of you to say, thank you. I especially appreciate the comment about the levels, when I was first starting out I had a lot of trial and error and I think I overdid it on a few uploads, but hope I've got the settings about right now
@@BitesizedAudio well that's good to hear 😀 I hope you're being monetized again Simon. I still listen on bandcamp and here. Not sure which benefits you most?
