Today Ben and Ernie are joined by returning guest and YNAB Lead Educator, Erin Lowell, who posed the idea of thinking bigger with your money. Many people come to YNAB seeking a way to escape the paycheck to paycheck cycle, pay down debt, build an emergency fund, and reduce their stress and anxiety around money. These are wonderful goals! However Erin reminds us that there are things you can do with your money beyond paying the bills, and she wants you to experience those things. Paying bills and handling unexpected expenses with cash for the first time is a thrilling feeling, but it's not the highest use of your money. Dream bigger than your bills!

I absolutely loved this episode. I’m a garden variety millennial who bought my first home at 35 in a HCOL area, so even though I was privileged with the resources to put 20% down and can comfortably afford my payments, I’m staring at what feels like an astronomical owing balance, and all the stories of “I paid off my mortgage by X age” feel more demoralizing than inspiring. I’m just hoping I own my home free and clear by the time I retire. But this inspired me to round up that payment to the next $100 mark and at least start gaining the momentum! 🎉

I got a new kitchen several years ago but kept my OLD fridge until I had enough cash in my refrigerator replacement category to buy a new one for my kitchen. YNAB kept me focused and steady plodding! Thank you for this encouraging episode.

11:25 That is fantastic that she just has this ready for the next car. I actually just bought my new USED car for 13,000. It's kind off nuts, because the only reason why it wasn't selling was that there was a wrap that was poorly applied. The car drives great still has a good amount of mileage left to drive on it. If you don't care about cosmetics as much my goodness you can get a good deal. I even managed to talk to a credit union to get a lower interest rate. My intentional practice was learning how to put money a side for an emergency savings and paying down more of my student loans, so that getting a car didn't hurt as much. I really love this episode! I hope this comment finds yall well!

Thank you! I realized I was very anxious on my true expenses. Realizing just following the YNAB method will help fall things into place. I already have way more in the bank than I could without YNAB, and one day I will have my Student Loans paid off with my other dreams succeeded.

The one thing I couldn't get out of my head the entire episode was why are people buying cars so often that they aren't saving up significant down payments for the next. A car can easily last 10 years, probably more like 15 until you start having real expensive issues. That's a lot of time to save up for the next car. I'm only 28 but I paid off my car shortly after buying my wife a new car due to a car accident. Once we pay off her car we will just pay that payment into a new car fund.

I've already listened to this via the podcast but had to come here to comment. I love it when Erin comes on the show. She is just the best, hopefully she will come back to discuss her new budget from after paying off the mortgage like you all talked about in that episode. Also, I'm curious as you always talk about how expensive car seats are and how you have to keep buying new ones. I live in Australia, we have convertible car seats that go from birth to 4 years old (some will go even higher in age). Does America not have car seats that convert from rear facing lying down to front facing sitting up? That is just hard for me to believe or understand honestly.

We have convertible carseats here. And for my last that's all we went with. Lots of people seem to want the bucket seats so they can take the seats in and out of the car when the baby is very young. I personally didn't use that feature much, but I see people do it all the time. And those don't convert, and the kids grow out quickly!

Yeah we do have convertible car seats here but a lot of us don't use them because they aren't portable and some people don't feel as comfortable for the kids. Also they expire after 6 years (due to the plastic getting brittle and insurance won't cover medical bills if your child was in an expired car seat), so they can't be reused indefinitely. I keep my kids in 5 point harness until 7 and a backless booster until 11 or so depending on height so with many kids that's a lot of different types of seats and years for them to expire😂

I like the occasional guest episode, but I do feel this episode could've been longer and richer if Ben and Ernie had gotten to talk about their experience and thoughts more
