This is Jacob's DREAM BUILD BIKE . About a year ago we found a vintage bianchi in the back garden of my parents house and so began the epic road bike restoration project!
This retro frame build was a labour of love taking many months to turn into a dream bike.

This bike is far too nice to ride in the rain!! Not sure on the tyre width (I think 25mm), but they're not original, just some new tyres

I really like this build. This kid respects the heritage of this Bianchi, yet he is able to blend it very nicely with modern parts. So many of us suffered on these bikes. They have a character of their own, this build captures that character. Great job!

Rad build dude! Better than the day it was bought. You are in a special club, as am I. Sanding a bike frame to a polish is a job many have started, but few have finished. Ive never polished a steel frame, but did sand it quite fine, 800 grit. I then hung it close to the ground from a tree in my front yard overnight to get dew on it. In the morning, as planned, a bit of corrosion had started. I warmed and dried it in the sun, then after a quick wipe with tack cloth, hit it with several coats of clear. It is a striking looking bike now, built up with vintage parts. Over 10 yrs later, the finish is slowly maturing. I did sandblast, then hand sand/polish an aluminum frame for a hybrid to singlespeed conversion build. I feel your pain. Yes, weeks of evenings watching TV, sanding. I regretted sandblasting as I had to sand down to the bottom of the profile left by the blast media. I used metal polish and found it darkened it a bit. Mothers aluminum polish left a brighter finish than autosol. Youve inspired me to try this on a FUJI Im playing with at present. Its all original, paint is a 6 outa 10. But its purple. I also wanna cut/file the pump peg, the (extra?) chain hanger, yes, two of em. Also get rid of the fender mounts. I often drill a big hole in the bottom of the bottom bracket shell, for weight. Ive modified the sausage tube that holds rear brake caliper so now my rear brake faces forward, mounted to front side. I think it looks cool, works just as well, and I could shorten cable a few cm. If I was doing your Bianchi, Id drill the handlebars to internally route the cable. Done this on modern and old school bars. Works great, no electrical tape.

I did something similar with an early ‘80s Trek road racing frame. I had it sandblasted and powder coated. The finish came out beautiful and then I built it up with an Ultegra set up. It rides like a dream!

Great video. We all have those bikes we lusted after at some point and they seem at the time like dreams. For me, it was the mid-80s Zullo, Pinarello, Tommasini, and Picchio. I have all but the Tommasini now. Originally, I went with contemporary vintage components but all now have modern components so I can get the most use out of them. They are no longer dream bikes for me but a reality. And they all get ridden properly. They are not wall hangers.

I absolutely love these kinds of bikes! My own road bike is a very similar kind of frame made locally in 1988 (like 30km from where I live) from Columbus SLX tubing which was looking really sorry for itself. I sanded it, resprayed and built up with all modern parts. It's the best road bike I've ever had and I'm absolutely in love with these. I really wanna get more people to know how amazing an old high quality steel frame is with a fresh setup.

Nice job and a lovely video, thanks for sharing. Shame you’re not keeping it! I did something similar with a Bianchi titanium frame that was a replica of the 2004 Roubaix winning bike. Some later era Bianchis than yours have structural foam injection in the seat tube which can be damaged by paint stripper so that’s one pitfall to watch out for. The bikes with it came with a frame sticker near the bottom bracket advertising it. I used Scotch-Brite pads to take off the paint and give a brushed Ti finish. That took weeks as well! I put 10 speed Campagnolo Record triple from the era of the last of the range topping alloy chain sets. Royce / Sapim / Ambrosio hand built wheels with Panaracer gravel tyres were added and Brooks Swallow Ti saddle. I’ve ridden it like this for a couple of years as a gravel bike and did rather well on certain Strava segments that were only really tackled on MTBs.

I found a '80s Bianchi Ocelot and over the course of 2 years found all the parts to make is a 1X gravel bike. The frame geometry is so comfortable! Short of Rivendell or Temple I don't think any bike manufacturers even make Frames like this. We both took a 30+ yr old bike and gave it new life and another 30 years. You can't do that with a carbon bike.

I have my friend's ol 1986 Specialized Allez he bought new after college. I cold worked the rear stays to respace the dropouts to fit 135mm axle/10 speed. I kept the original paint and just touched up the nicks and scratches. I eventually want to put a full Shimano 105 groupset on it, but for now it's rolling with a Tiagra/Sora mix (robbed from my daughter'sold bike she outgrew), Reynolds Stratus Elite wheels, Profile carbon fork, and other bits.

cool to see. I have a late 90's Bianchi Eros that I ride daily. I love it. I dont really see a need to upgrade it at all. I did a full refresh on it 9 years ago and it's due for a good cleaning and some new cables and tape. thanks for the inspiration!

@@GuntherSnaps damn on my bike the cables need to be replaced after around a month riding in wet conditions, and that doesn't account for my rear brake cable refusing to comply after the first wet ride. But yeah it generally takes a month for the rest of the cables to stop moving. I used to clean ans relube my cables but considering the time and effort to do that and the cost of new cables, I just change everything now.

I found a 2006 Bianchi Giro frame on the side of the road and I've been Frankensteining it together with parts I have around. One thing that this bike won't have is a front derailleur because who ever had the bike before ground off the metal pin bracket that would of held the front derailleur. So, I'll just have to put a single chain ring. I'm going to use fiber glass to cover the grinder marks. I'll probably paint it a 2020 Bianchi turquoise.
