Hey unc stu, I really like your lessons and I've learnt so much in the last three months. I am spending multiple hours a day practicing and really enjoying playing. Thank you for being an amazing teacher. I also happen to be a physics major and would like to try and explain matrices so here's my attempt: So consider your guitar lets talk frets and strings, number them 1 to 6 from the bottom string to the top Now when you play a note how do you tell someone in writing(as in 'math' language) where that note lies on the board: to make it concise in math we write for example as (1,2) instead of drawing tabs which is interpreted by others as 1st fret on the B string(2nd string). Another name for this (1,2) is a position vector(vector is something that gives you a direction and how much distance you go from absolute 0 to get there. Here it means=>Up 2 strings and over 1 fret from open strings). Now we have to play a chord which is usually made up of multiple notes: Here we get to matrices: when we want to give multiple positions we write them in line after line (like the first note then switch line to give position for the second note and so on) format. So the E chord becomes: (0,1) (0,2) (1,3) (2,4) (2,5) (0,6) (fun fact, on a tangent: the vertical ordering of writing notes doesn't matter as in with whatever fingers you play these notes with is irrelevant as long as all these notes get played you get an E chord) To say that these seemingly different lines of text have to be interpreted as one unified object we but big square brackets around all of them. In math we deal with more variables than strings and frets, for example in space we also have a height number which might tell you how tightly you have to press the string and at what time, then a note will become (0,1, hardness, time) (0,2, hardness, time) (1,3, hardness, time) (2,4, hardness, time) (2,5, hardness, time) (0,6, hardness, time) to accommodate and leave space for these other variables we switch to the next line so we can add them to the right of the already available (1,2) If we consider adding more strings to our guitar we can continue writing new notes on other strings along with other variables continuing in the next line, if we add a higher note than our E string, we can still continue writing in the next line as the ordering of the lines doesn't matter as long as all the notes are being played With this analogy going from an E to F to F# or to D# to D and so on is what we mean by the operation of matrix addition, I can explain that if you'd like too.
