Excellent overview on the Darien. I own a Darien and a Raven. Love them both, the Raven offers a removable net with double zippers. It's a solid option, I can tug on both sides of my underquilt directly when getting situated. I can get the same thing done with my Darien, just a tad more challenging. The Darien is, in my opinion, a superior comfort to value hammock option; I presently own 14 hammocks from different makers, so I've tried some out. I went slightly wide on my Darien, and for me the excessive comfort has been well worth the slightly extra weight. Thanks for highlighting a really thoughtful and reasonably priced hammock; Dream Hammock pays close attention to customer comfort ! (I always say no to #3 zippers as well, not conducive to nighttime sanity !)
@AdventureswiththeMarine

I think you might have me beat on the hammocks. I will have to count them. But I have given away at lot of hammocks over the years to people in need. I went really wide on this Darien to test with very tall people. This hammock is 72 inches ( 182 cm ) wide. I am 6 ft. and find it very comfortable. If you don't mind me asking Dan. How tall are you and how wide is your Darien?
@rageoid
@rageoid 4 года назад
Backpacking With a Hammock - 72 is mega wide ! Tie-outs and/or knotty mods for that beast. Started adulthood at 5'10" and have collapsed down to 5' 9" over the years due to some disc issues stemming from football and a bad mountain bike accident in a downhill race many years ago. The disc issues are the reason I made the switch to hammocks from tents about 6 years ago, could not handle the back pain of the sleeping mats any longer ! Since Hammocks, zero to minimal back pain in the AM. My Darien is a finished 64" I believe, had to use a wider fabric and went with the 1.3 MTN XL, something like that. My Raven is a more standard width, around 58" I believe. My hammocks are a bit of a revolving door with trades and gifts as well, but, never have traded, sold, or gifted my Dream models ! I counted hammocks the other day because my wife was demanding I re-organize the basement and I transferred my hammocks to separate smaller bins by brand and/or type. My very first hammock, a 9.5 foot Hennessy with the tiny asym tarp, has its own special place ! Best wishes from northern MN, I have enjoyed your content immensely. We have traveled most of the same ground. Just put my Bell Magic away this weekend !

You have provided a lot of good information about the different hammocks and your personal likes. Different individuals different likes or dislikes. I've had a Clark Tropical for a lot of years and it's what you called a banana sleep ( straight with the ridge line ) hammock. I also have several with the asymmetric lay ( diagonal to the ridge line ) and find either style just as comfortable. Probably because I started with an old U.S. Army Jungle hammock back in the late 50's. Not a lot to chose from back then. I have acquired 9 different hammocks over the years and still use them.( Not including the old Army one , it's been retired.) 3 are 100% mosquito proof and 6 aren't unless you add a bug net to them.

On my trip as I set up the hammock, I kept falling down and knots kept coming loose. Also I braught the hammock from Walmart, it's called an Equip hammock with bugnet. Finding companies that will do custom work and has great customer service is hard to find nowadays.Growing up. That was the standard here in the U.S. years ago. An example would be when you needed gas for vehicle. You would go to a service station. ( fill your tank, wash your windshield and checked your oil and tire pressure ). Now that the service is removed. They are just called Gas Stations. Thank you for always watching Kevin.

I have never found a gathered end hammock comfortable. Maybe needed a longer one. Tried Warbonnet Blackbird. Went to their bridge hammock and I have a flatter lay with an air pad.
@AdventureswiththeMarine
@AdventureswiththeMarine 4 года назад
If you are not getting a flat lie with a gather end hammock. In most cases the hammock is to short. Otherwise to narrow or both. If you are not getting a flat lie in a bridge hammock. Then your suspension might be at a angle that is to high. For a bridge hammock you want the suspension at a 20 to 25 degree angle to archive a flat lie. Not at a 30 degree angle like the gathered -end hammock. Thank you for watching Jody. I really appreciate it.

I may be wrong because I don’t own a Dream hammock, but I believe it’s actually the bugnet that’s cut asymmetrical or symmetrical. The “hammock” body itself is still a symmetrical cut of fabric.
@karlmckernan4476
@karlmckernan4476 4 года назад
Michael O'Dell you are wrong.
@michaelodell5738
@michaelodell5738 4 года назад
Is that your opinion or from Dream hammock. Look at a chameleon or a sparrow and notice that it’s the Bugnet, not the hammock body that changes. Even the Warbonnet BB and XLC are symmetrical hammock bodies and the bugnet is what designates them as an asymmetrical lay. I’m not intending to argue I just am trying to help. Happy Veterans Day!
@AdventureswiththeMarine
@AdventureswiththeMarine 4 года назад
Michael, you are correct. I should of mention that. It is the bug net or overcover ( winter ) that determines if the asymmetrical hammock is a right lay. Or a left lay. Take off the bug net or overcover and you will have a symmetrical hammock. Thank you Michael and Karl for watching. I always appreciate it.

@AdventureswiththeMarine
@AdventureswiththeMarine 4 года назад
I should have mention that the video was not a paid review. I have had hammock companies ask to partner up with a short or long term contract.Which I declined.I will never be stuck using one brand of hammocks. ( where is the freedom ) When a hammock company ask me to try there product. And I do not find it different or unique. Something that would help the viewers. I will tell them no thank you. And when I have tried there product. If it is nothing special or junk. I will not waste my time doing a video. If I do a video. I will tell them that I am going to give a honest review to the best that I can. I will tell about the pro's and also the con's. The things that I like and the things I don't like. And the review is for the viewers, not the companies. The viewers are my priority. That is why I would rather pay for something and try it out. Plus I will always use it and really test it out before I do a review. You will never see a product box opening with me telling you how pretty it looks. I really do try to give the best non biased non paid reviews. And I really want to help and connect with people. Thank you for watching John.

Another excellent video! I'm catching up on all your videos since I've gotten back into hammock camping. I have two questions. 1) How did you determine your personal preference on right-lay versus left-lay? My gut says I'd prefer a right-lay (as you have) with my feet at the zipper since it's only zipped on one side and that'll ensure my head doesn't interact with the zipper. 2) Now that you've owned this (and others), do you have an opinion on integrated bug nets (and not being able to remove them)? When looking at the comparison between a Sparrow and Darien, they are surprisingly similar minus a removable bug net. Sometimes it's just nice to lounge in the hammock without a bug net, but again, $75+ more expensive to have that "luxury". 3) Final question, did you set a custom width, or go with the option for "as wide as possible" which would be based on the fabric choice presumably? Thanks for the videos, these are great!
@AdventureswiththeMarine
@AdventureswiththeMarine 4 года назад
For the first question: When you get into the hammock. Try lying both ways to see which works best for you. I will lie in a hammock one way. My son will lie in it the other way. Personal preference. 2. I prefer to have a hammock without a bug net. But summer time dose not allow that with all the biting insects. So if I where to buy one hammock that would work for any type of an outdoor activity and for any season. Then I would definitely get the Sparrow. It is worth the extra money. If you plan on using this over the years. Then I would look at it as a good investment. 3. To answer this question. I would need to know your height.

@AdventureswiththeMarine
@AdventureswiththeMarine 4 года назад
That is a great question. It depends on the thickness of the material that is being used. Some people would buy a double layer of material to make sure that they are protected. For people like me. That are on the heavier side. The material is than thick enough to protect me from biting insects. Hammocks made of a fabric of 1.60z or higher, will do the job. Thank you for watching Francisco. What's your feeling regarding whether a double layer will save you from bug bits thru it (vs single layer)
@Oldsparkey
@Oldsparkey 4 года назад
Speaking for myself and no one else. I camp in the Florida Swamps and Mosquitoes are always looking for a meal. Single bottom hammocks without a bug net all the way around are a buffet line for the bugs. A double bottom It stops them from getting to you , any body parts off my self inflating mattress and against the hammocks material are safe from bites. I inflate the mattress from 50 to 75% so it will conform to my body and the hammock. A buddy was using a single bottom hammock , his arms were against the material over night and in the morning he looked like his arms had Chicken Pox , a mass of red spots from bites. There is a simple way to beat the bugs with a single bottom , spray the bottom of the hammock with bug repellent each night. The ones I have found to be 100% mosquito proof , Warbonnet , Hennessy and Clark. I'm sure others are on the market but I have not used them.

I have never had a mosquito bite thru my single layer. YET! Unless you need the extra weight support. I have two hammocks that are double layer. Material that are used to make hammocks today are much stronger. If I where to buy them again. I would make them a single layer. Thank you for watching Deerless.

Thanks for the great video! How does this compare to the blackbird?
@AdventureswiththeMarine
@AdventureswiththeMarine 4 года назад
The Darien is lighter, and less bulky. Less expensive and a little more comfort. But I absolutely love the shelf on the the Blackbird. I will be using both of these hammocks for years to come. Thank you Andrew for watching.

@@AdventureswiththeMarine That's great, if I ever buy a second hammock I'll probably look into this one. I currently sleep in my hammock every night in my back yard, beats a bed in my book!

Right lay, left lay asymmetrical hammock? Can't you just rotate the hammock?

You can for all hammocks. Except for the hammock with bug nets that are cut to give you either a left lay or a right lay. Thank you for watching didgeridooblue. I really appreciate it.

@@luigisandoval I went and checked out the hammock on their website. The length is 11 foot. The width is 64 inches. The weight limit is 225. It weighs 16 ounces. And it’s a right lay. That hammock would be perfect for you. The 1.2 mountain light will have a little bit of stretch but I think it would work great for you. I would definitely get it.

How tall are you and what width did you go with? Thanks
@AdventureswiththeMarine
@AdventureswiththeMarine 4 года назад
I am 6 ft. and the hammock size that works well for my size is a 11ft. hammock that is anywhere between 66 to 70 inches. Because I have broad shoulders. I prefer the 70 in. But remember. The wider the fabric, the more heavier and bulky it will be if you are a backpacker. For me. I do not mind carrying that little extra weight. Thank you for watching Marty Callan TxFilmmaker.
