What an amazing shop. There is always some kind of snag in any construction. I'm wondering if you will be considering skinning the interior? It's not necessary but any welding or work area might get ugly. Congratulations on the mega shop. Looking forward to seeing it develop as time goes by.

@Will7981
@Will7981 2 года назад
Actually, Josh’s trailer is a single wide. There’s quite a difference in a single vs. double wide. Only professional trailer trash would opt for a double wide and waste the money on what they cost IMO. A single wide is much more respectable and cost effective if you go the trailer route.

Megashop looks awesome. Will you be doing a complete cost breakdown on it? I have gotten 4 quotes on a 60x100 for our farm but am hesitant to spend that kind of money on something that will not directly earn me anything back. Trying to think of all the uses that would justify it. Help a buddy off the fence! Haha

Is your farm situated where you can sell direct and bypass the middleman? Creates a new set of problems, but selling wholesale at auction doesn't seem to be working for small scale farmers. People see your 200 acres and think that's big. By today's standards it's very small. Not meant as an insult to those who think it is, just reality which I think you fully understand. Big corporate farms only make it because they can use factors of scale to their advantage. Also probably not news to you.

spray foam would have cost 3 times as much and looks like total crap after about 3 months...if the shop was gonna be finished out inside with metal it wouldn't matter...however this roll insulation does just great and is part of the building package. $8,000 to insulate with bats v/s $24k to spray foam it

3:45 i am a bit concerned with the types of screws they used. You made a large investment on the building and you should expect quality on everything. Those screws appear to be very small on the head side meaning it won't take much of a wind event to cause issues. We have larger screw heads on our buildings with rubber washers. See the screws used on the roof? They should have used the same screw type on the wall panels.

Our building is very much like that. We put in Anderson 400 - 400 mph wind /two-by-four safe. We did that for the near by trees and Tornado and Hurricanes. MY inside walls are 2x12 walls studs and a flying beam end to end 2 large LAM beams - and 2x12's up there due to the plaster load. Library, workroom, game room. Nicely done.

Josh, You might want to make sure your doors you purchased are wind rated for the same rating as your building! This is how doors blow in during storms I am from the midwest and if they are not designed to the building code used on your structure insurance companies are getting sharper if this is not met so you might want to double check with your door supplier. I know this as i sell doors for part of my living.

it's not really a "reveal cost" issue...it's that quoting a cost today may have no relevance tomorrow in our crazy economy. This was done pre-covid. @rickmervine9952
@rickmervine9952 2 года назад
It's really coming along, Josh! Big undertaking and a lot more work over the next year or so and a lot more videos! One note, you discussed foam as an insulation and vapor barrier. Open cell foam has its uses but it does absorb moisture if allowed to and can be problematic in this type of use. Closed cell foam is different and resists moisture and can act to make the whole structure more ridged. That said, foam is much more expensive than the insulation used in your building. You also have to conside the climate. I live in the upper Midwest now but used to live in NC. Doesn't get nearly as cold in NC and snow load is less of an issue. If needed, when the money is available, you can add more insulation to any part of the building in the future. Looking forward to the next video and the final punch list!

Josh Beautiful building i usually get a roll of blue tape go around and put blue tape on punch list areas arrow like down to corner bottom plate light area you showed after they fix it; then pull off tape, but make a written list and go back and check their work. you may be able to used backer rod to stuff air penetration gaps around windows. I'm impressed nice shop brother. Josh if you need to lubricate the cables on the bay doors be sure to get a couple of cans of that (special lubricant) get a couple of cans guard it as precious, and fix a schedule. a definite case where an once of prevention is worth a pound of cure getting the garage door guy is expensive especially once maintenance service warranty is up. Been there done that if you don't stay on top of lubricating those spring loaded cables lots of damage occurs, set a schedule and stay on top of it always of serious damage will occur this is the problem with large bay doors like yours.

The 'Tilt and Turn' windows are what we use in Europe where cleaning them above ground level is required, and for secure ventilation. They are probably a lot more expensive than the sash type though. Germany used them decades before we ever did. The plus side is that annoying flies can find their way out if the gap is at the top rather than the bottom. Are you going to use any mechanical ventilation in the building?

I do understand however that sometimes you need loans, and I totally respect how hard any farmer works and what it takes to achieve goals. I think Wranglerstar had about the same number of subs as you when DeWalt hooked him up with boxes full of tools (and tbh he never really used half of it...). Insulation - if you want to stay super cool put 12 inches or more of insulation on the walls framed against the metal building. Put 8 inches in the 1st floor ceiling then repeat the same for the 2nd floor except add 12 inches of insulation on the roof. Do not waste money on spray foam unless you go closed cell 3 inches or more thick. We did our 2nd shop with living quarters using bag insulation only and the temps are WAYY better than the 1st shop with 8 inches of open cell spray foam. My AC unit in the 1st shop/home has 2 ac units that runs 5 hours daily downstairs and 8 hours daily upstairs. My AC unit in the 2nd shop/home has only 1 unit and it runs for 4 hours per day. Use foam cans around windows, doors and that crack i am certain you will see at the top where the insulation is smashed against the red iron.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 2 года назад
man....we can put tons of insulation in there for sure...but you gotta think about my climate...it doesn't get much over 100 degrees for maybe 2 days in the summer...and the coldest I've ever seen it here is 1 degree F. R 19 in the roof and R13 in the walls is great for this application my friend

16:21 - Those screws looks really good - a significant point. Unfortunately, I did not like this construction at all. The design looks like something that was invented in the 1940's - it is so old fashioned. I just cant see why people aren't building with insulated sandwich steel panels. That way the interior would be finished when the exterior and insulation is done. Way better insulation and much tighter building. It is possible to eliminate most of the girders and purlins, and the interior can made be much cleaner. I cant see the cost is significant higher either. About $4 sf for 4" panels from panelsell ca. Looks like the price has doubled in 2 years or so though.

Just my two cents Josh but I think you would’ve gotten a whole better and stronger and quality built building with using R and R builders in Illinois. I think they would’ve served you much better. But this is just my two cents and I know you’re not gonna terret down and go build a new one.

dude...this is my farm....not youtube land....RR buildings is thousands of miles away from me and I didn't want a wood pole barn.....I'm not trying to be rude...but RR Buildings isn't the end all be all of construction. I love his channel...and love the quality of the work too...but he's 1000 + miles away so that aint gonna happen brotha...I did not want a wooden building...I don't want wood fence posts...and I don't want a wooden gate on the farm...see the trend my brotha....If I build it out of wood...I'll be rebuilding it when I'm 80....no way! RR buildings is one of the few channels I watch very regularly

I'm seeing some serious weight loss in this video compared to where you were in older videos. What did you do? I keep gaining weight and anything I try doesn't seem to work. What's your secret?
