With MP rejoined, i expect groovy and fill-ish DT song, and take a break from MM rich technicalities. But as the new single come out, i feel that they lost both technicality and groove. Even the drum sound and tone is similar with its predecessor. Idk, man. It's just 1 song from an entire album.
I think this song is one of the best from Dream Theater's Mike Mangini era. I think it could even be considered one of the standout tracks among DT's whole songs. It feels like Mangini left us with his best work before departing from DT. The melody and beat are quite catchy, and the riffs and sound appeal significantly to metal fans without being overly complex. Farewell, Mike Mangini; my utmost respect.
The rides been awesome. Saw them live with my guitar player back way back in PA late 90s or early 2000s it's been awhile for sure. Still in my theatre Dreaming 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Mangini's work hit me hard. I experiences some crazy memories and moments with his work. He inspired me to reach levels on the drums I hadn't previously reached. In early 2010 I had quit an amazingly talented band. In 2011 they asked me to come back. When I did we started on a journey that saw us heading in a more prog direction. It was over by summer of 2012, sadly. More recently, the band I'm in now I've been able to start bringing that element back. I'm really going to miss Mangini.
@@dankred5606 Mangini runs circles around Portnoy, and that's very hard for me to admit, dumb dumb. No "noob" here, been a fan for WELL over 30 years like around when Day and Dream was released, but I am sure you will try to out due me with "I have been a fan since they were Majesty" B.S.
Been a drummer and DT fan for over 25 years. This is by FAR my favorite song during the Mangini era. I can't wait to see how MP plays this going forward!
Hard to believe it was 30 years ago I first heard the opening chords of "Pull Me Under" and fell in love with this band. That they can still deliver us songs like this is amazing :)
@@bassimprovjams3772: You stole my thought about "The Astonishing" LIVE release. I hope it gets released under the 'Lost Not Forgotten Archives' banner some lovely day. I'm most certain they must have recorded at least ONE show out of many on that tour. Criminally underrated album by DT in my honest opinion!
@@BreakingAllIllusions Somewhere I read that they have recorded an Astonishing DVD, but the record broke, got lost or something like that. It's a pity :(
@@bikekante: Wow, this is really shocking and sad if true. I never read anything like that in all these years though. Could you please share the source of this information? Thanks 👍🏼
LYRICS: White walls glisten Empires, crimson Aching within Raging fire Sovereign, asphyxiate No conscience, A solemn state Misguide, indoctrinate Accepted long held views When will there be a day when all of us Trust in love and peace? Burns bright for us When will the long-held truth be cast aside? Embrace our fellow man, no longer vilified Radiant we'll shine Heart and soul, one mind Illuminating all Answering the call Decisions by which to act Programmed, no turning back Call upon a switch turned on An ultimate price to pay Weeping mother too late to cry Hold the truth, can't ignore the lie Time to look it in the eye When will there be a day when all of us Trust and know in love and peace When will the long held truth be cast aside Embrace our fellow man, no longer vilified Radiant, we'll shine Heart and soul, one mind Illuminating all Answering the call Fight or flight, both threatening Hidden thoughts are deafening Your guilt feeding the flame Tearful knowing it's a lie Desired might just past you by Rituals, your funeral pyre Scars you can't erase If you choose to face There is beauty in us all Walk the higher ground There you will be found The writing's on the wall Will you wager your life? Radiant, we'll shine Heart and soul, one mind Walk the higher ground There you will be found Illuminating all Answering the call Answering the call (Song credited to Petrucci and Rudess, John probably wrote the lyrics)
You misspelled their best album of all time The Astonishing, but this would be 2nd. Actually, 3rd, the self titled Dream Theater is better than that one. Oh, I meant at the time. The Astonishing is 1st for me, then 6 degrees, scenes, octavarium, black clouds, train of thought for my top 6 with probably Systematic Chaos 7th. The others aren't even top 7 for me.
As a guitar player Just listen to John's guitar tone, specially when he palm mutes. Dream Theater probably one of the few bands ever that connects past, present and future with their music. Highly talented and rated.
12 years ago, the first time I heard On the Backs of Angels was my encounter with Dream Theater. I can feel that vibes in this song. Their music never gets old, but rather wears a newness that never changes!
Same here. Most people start knowing DT song is either spirit carries on or pull me under. But I first know DT song is On the Backs of Angels. Pure progressive metal
What a great gateways t9 the band! It's my favorite album of theirs, but I seem to have a preference for the "Mangini era" material and his version of the previous material. My first exposure was Pull Me Under, which was awesome being a 15 year old kid in 1992! I often wish they had started with Mangini...
The first encounter of mine was in the presence of enemies. I remember listening to it over and over again for hours and days, i was literally blown away
Please get James to write all the lyrics on the next album. The alien, answering the call, at wits end, viper king, out of reach were all outstanding lyrics wise for them
Listening to this amazing band since 2012, when I was introduced to the Prog Metal world. Since then they're probably the band I've listened more in my whole life! CHEERS FROM BRAZIL!!! WE LOVE YOU COME TO SANTA CATARINA❤🇧🇷
Answering the Call, Awaken the Master and A view from the Top of the World, my 3 favs of this album.... Can't wait to see them live playing these songs... I've seen them live 9 times already and can't wait to see them again.
This is what Prog is about: Amazing music, incredible stories and inspiring messages, created and played by outstanding artists! One of their best! We need more people spreading the message of “Trust in love and peace” and “Embrace our fellow man - no longer vilified!” Bravo!
Lyrics on point, relating to the situation in Europe, US, UK and nearly everywhere else as well. Time for hate and fear to take a backseat. Well done DT
So long as we are talking about the current conditions being shoved down our throats. That will never be accepted. Don’t read too much into it tool! They are Libertarians. Nuff said.
Best track in the album deserved its own video, though it was kinda weird as usual, lol. I've already said this but this is the song that most brings me back to the 6 Degrees era. Absolute beautiful feeling.
Love you guys!!! I've been with you ALL ALONG!!! So intense, accurate and forward moving. You have such an amazing TALENT 💯% I'M getting older,& still HERE!!! GET em guys!!! ✝️👊🤠👍🇺🇸💯%
I was suspicious of it being a woke message; and am proven right by this video “No justice no peace” nonsense, like they support Buy Large Mansions, Woke Theater
Amo esta canción y todas las del último álbum, pero esperaba mas del video ver a todo el equipo tacando, quizás con las imágenes entrelazadas. Bueno igual se agradece cualquier lanzamiento de DT!
I can only imagine how much better this song would have sounded with Portnoy hitting the drums... Mangini's drumming is exquisite but i miss Portnoy's terrific groove..
This was the video that was playing in the background live, I remember it from your concert in Naples at January this year. Can't wait to see you guys another time in Italy
