@@Rebellionsenclave Of course it's going to sound different with the drums, being a different drummer. Hell when Mangini played Portnoy era songs it sounded different.
The Enemy Inside is one of the first Mangini Era songs I thought of that are right in Portnoy's wheelhouse. Even the parts as played by Mangini remind me of stuff Portnoy plays anyway. Breaking All Illusions and The Enemy Inside are the two I want to see him play most from those 5 albums.
I don't know man... we got to see MM playing MP parts and it was so great and different. Now we got the see the opposite as well and many people dreamt so long about this. We are so lucky!
I don't know what people expect. Portnoy is unique and Mangini is unique as well. They play each other's parts their own way. Mangini changed some parts as well, sometimes not the best way. So this is just a pure example of two individuals playing the same song on their own style and musical approach. Come on people, don't have to hate any of these gentleman.
Well, they jumped up on MM when they thought he "butchered" the outro of Finally Free in Breaking The Fourth Wall. I think now, MP "butchered" Barstool Warrior 😅😅
@@janzojanzo9059 improving is not butchering. With all due respect to Mangini (and considering this is a phone recording), there are many improved things here: better flow in the drum parts, no click track, real backing vocals. The ending of finally free simply didn’t have the feel with Mangini
@@janzojanzo9059 Mangini really butchered that outro and not only in "Breaking The Fourth Wall" but every tour when they played "Finally Free". And I don't care how much that nonsense he was playing was technically complicated, but it not only didn't serve the music, but broke it completely. Mangini was like an "educated fool" who had much more skills than taste and understanding of how and when to use it correctly. Something Portnoy has never had a problem with.
@@SokolRock exactly this. Mangini is not only butchered the outro of Finally Free but basically remove all of the groove, dynamics, and instantaneousity of the music itself. I believe the whole band felt it and started to scratch their head then decided to jam again with Portnoy for a chance of comparison, which leads to the new LTE record and Petrucci solo tour with Portnoy
Portnoy has done a great job. Showing massive respect to the Mangini era. People don't realise that they are two very different drummers. Love Portnoy's feel on this.
@@lmntdtmlnd I never said that, I said I really like Portnoy's feel on this. It doesn't mean that the original wasn't amazing. Barstool warrior is one of my favourites from the Mangini era.
You would expect the comments to be filled with drumming nerds bashing the current or former drummer. Instead, they bond together in bashing the lead singer, it's beautiful.
Sadly, back in the very early days he had such bad food poisoning that when he was vomiting, her actually hemorrhaged a vocal chord. The doctors told him he needed 6 months at least of not singing and pretty much not even speaking for it to heal properly. The band was just starting to become successful and instead of taking the time off, he went out on tour. And his voice has suffered ever since. In hind sight, maybe he should have taken the time off, but would the band have survived?
@jeremythornton433 stop using this story as an excuse for why he can't sing anymore! That was 30 years ago! His voice has aged normally. He can't sing the same notes anymore. That food poisoning story is so old and tired. Yes. He had a vocal injury 30 years ago. He's in his 60s now.
I never doubted for a moment that even though he may not play Mangini's parts note for note (Mangini didn't play Portnoy's parts note for note either, and not because of a lack of capability on either one), Portnoy kept the feel and the groove the song needed. 🤘🏼🤘🏼💯
To be fair I prefer Portnoy's style and I love that he gives his take on the song rather than just covering it. I always found Mangini's style too technical for it's own sake.
I love both MP or MM era. I can appreciate both of MM interpretation of MP’s drumming or MP interpretation of MM’s drumming. Cant wait to see ‘em live at Indonesia again. Cant wait to listen the others MP interpretation of MM’s drumming. Add: thanks btw for sharing this footage 👍🍻
Love seeing MP rockin it on a Mangini Era song! Also, this song and the new one really seem to sit in LaBrie’s range very well! Hoping to see DT on the road when they come to the USA next year!
Once again, shout out to James Labrie for giving us his all at 61. They are playing the music in key, and that is important to me! I am happy so see them in Los Angeles in February, I am sure that James will be warmed up by then.
Did I expect Portnoy to play Mangini's part exactly? No Did I expect him to play it close to the original with his own flare? Yes I also expected at least 4 Mangini songs in this set. They honestly only played this song, because This Is The Life hardly counts as a drum song.
"because This Is The Life hardly counts as a drum song." You make it sound like Mike Portnoy is the "new guy" who needs to prove himself as a drummer. Are you out of your mind? Besides, this is an anniversary tour (at least this part) where preference is given to older songs, including those that they haven't performed for a long time. In addition, since Mike is making set lists, they will be constantly changing and maybe you will still hear what you want.
so fucking loooove portnoy play this song with his own heart, not pretending to be mangini ❤️ fuck the complainers, this is good man ! Really cant wait his own version of the back of angels or the enemy inside 🥹
To all, both of them respect each other's styles! It is well documented in interviews, that MP liked MM interpretation of his drumming while adding to the feel live. They talk, they are friends.
Why do people want to split them into two separate bands? Both Mikes are part of Dream Theater. It’s not about respect or anything, They’re just playing their songs. No one says stuff like this about other bands. Does Trujilo plays Enter Sandman as a respect for Jason? No.
finally the drums can be heard in Dream Theater concerts again, after more than a decade, and they will be heard on recordings for sure, the drums sound is crystal clear finally again. Long live the King❤
Oh LaBrie, it hurts listening to you singing alive and not reaching the high notes anymore... although MP played Mangini's era song so damn well, not exactly as MM but it was played by MP very well ❤❤
at this time you'll see the diff of two drummer. 1 song but with different version/style of drumming. and both version is great. they don't need to replicate each other parts note by note. use your own style or version. well in this version, what can i say? just wow..
Exactly this I've been a drummer for most of my life, Portnoy was the reason I started playing, and ill be the first to say that Portnoy is NOT as good as Mangini on a technical level. That said, portnoy's playing style is (in my opinion) such an integral part of dream theater's sound, and portnoy's take on this song makes it sound like it could've been a portnoy era dream theater song easily. He absolutely killed it, and I'm GLAD he played it his own way.
It’s kinda obvious since the beginning lmfao. Not only they never held a pair of drum sticks in their life, they’re also clueless about the band catalog before Mangini joined the band. Mangini is such a nice guy and cool dude. I simply don’t like him in the band because his playing style is just too different. But if people say Tool fans are obnoxious, Mangini fans for some reason beat them as the champion 😀
@@Jdmp09 Naa, Portnoy's DNA is on all the classic DT records. Mangini is amazing in his own right. Portnoy is phenomenal as well. Two different drummers. Love Portnoy's feel on this track. And I loved Mangini's version as well.
It is like it is. Awesome. Cant understand the posts against James. Would you ever say the Stones need another Mick Jagger? This here is DT . Love it……
I'm trying to analyse a drummer's take on a previous drummer's version of a song, but there's a singer who can't get shit done with an easy song of his own recent material who keeps getting in the way!
I didn't listen to much non portnoy era DT, but i dont see Mike struggling to do anything here. Im sure he's not 100% on each song yet, nor would he play it the same. He played most of his own songs slightly differently live.
Wow…. Portnoy is playing drums in DT again and is playing Mangini era DT music. Chills….. these are those reasons why I hail them the Greatest to ever freaking do it!!!! You too Labrie, you silly Kareoke king you. I accept him only because the band accepts him. They deserve better vocal prowess!!! Sorry not sorry
Been a DT fan for nearly 30 years. Sorry, but this wasn't great. James has served DT well, but it's time for him to retire. I would have preferred that they kept Mangini and got a new singer.
