I am surprised because in this video, they sort of apologize for making an album like Falling into Infinity. I don't know what they are talking about, because for sure that album is not the greatest album of the music history. For sure it is not the best Dream Theater album too. And it sounds also very different from the other albums. But in THAT album there are iconic DT songs like Lines in the sand, Hell's Kitchen, Trial of tears, Hollow Years, New Millenium, Peruvian Skies, Anna Lee, Burning my Souls! I mean maybe I named all the songs in the album LOL Yes the other 3-4 tracks that I have not named, are that kind of tracks that Portnoy is complaining about. That kind of songs written "to satisfy the industry". And honestly we all felt that at the time. But the other songs are LEGIT Dream Theater songs!! It was just a different Dream Theater album, but it was GREAT. In his own way. And I always liked that album from the first day. I never understood all the criticism about that album, still today, more than 20 years after it came out. Anyway we had almost another 20 years of Dream Theater after this anniversary! This is amazing!

Yeah, man. Got you definitely. I just love FII and I too don't understand why they created this obscure atmosphere around this album. FII has amazing (yeah, amazing) songs... Much better than some from later albuns. Still can't understand why they reject this album so much.
@maciejkowalski2759
@maciejkowalski2759 2 года назад
@@KakoSales85 I think they are complaining not so much about the album itself but about the atmosphere that surrounded making of this album. And sure, while most of the songs that ended up on the album are quite good, there was a bunch of songs that they also recorded during that period but which DIDN'T end up on the album - like Raising the Knife, or Metropolis part 2. The songs had to be cut in favor of some shorter, more commercial songs. And while in the end its maybe better that the 25 minute version of Metropolis part 2 did not make it onto the album, as it made way for "Scenes from the Memory", at the time the band could have been really frustrated about not being allowed to release that song.

It's the album that got us all hooked... BUT... It isn't every fans favorite anymore... Most albums post Falling into Infinity (Which still has some GREAT songs, most notably "Lines in the Sand" and John Myung's "Trial of Tears.") have been pretty fantastic... Especially Systematic Chaos (My favorite DT album to date) and Octavarium... Listen to them a little more carefully sir... You have to change things up sometimes to keep the peoples interest intact...
@Nettacki
@Nettacki 8 лет назад
+Eric E Gutierrez I'm surprised you consider Systematic Chaos your favorite DT album to date, because to me (and to many others), it's one of their weaker efforts. You could tell they were working on a schedule and not in a way that allowed their songwriting to be more organic like older releases.
@palonazo
@palonazo 8 лет назад
In my opinion, the DT sound that got me hooked stopped to exist when Kevin Moore left. People complain about Mangini now... they have no idea how much more significant the change to Rudess was than the change to Mangini. Moore was magic, he was the melancholy in all those great Awake songs. But I guess it all depends on when you started following the band and if you're in for the music or just for the CALCULATORRRR METALLLL. I'm a 90s boy I guess.

I got on listening to Dream Theater in 1994 and we had like a big company of friends who were all crazy about their music and after so many years they still have same appeal to our minds, great!

I think Scenes From A Memory, Images and Words, Train of Thought, and A Dramatic Turn of Events are their best albums. I don't know what the craze is about Octavarium, the only aspects that stood out to me are the title track and The Root of All Evil.

I've been looking for so long for a video parody from username Adam02 where he uses scenes from this documentary where Petrucci says: "Our keyboardist of the time, Kevin Moore...he didn't want to come to the Awake Tour because...he didn't like John Myung...and that was pretty weird for us because...we had no idea who John Myung was...was quite weird" xD Then sometime later they show Myung responding to "Kevin Moore's sayings" and he says: "I never said a single word to Kevin...in my entire life! Well...I never said a single word ever to the other guys either but...I'm confused...he's just...a fucked up bitch!" It's a very old video, and there are other hilarious videos from Adam02 about DT and Petrucci...but that one is now missing, I can't find it! Does someone have it?

There used to be this old parody video that I can't find ANYWHERE anymore and it was hilarious. John was like "You know, its been 20 years and I still don't know the bass player's name. This weird Asian guy just kept following us around and sneaking up onstage every night. I told him 'look man, if I ever see you following us again I will remove your head from your shoulders with my bare hands'. I told security to look out for him but somehow he just keeps managing to sneak onstage every night. 20 years its been like that, after a certain point you just gotta commend his dedication, you know?"

There can't be a Dream Theater without Portnoy ....... same way there won't be a Rush without Neil Peart . Mancinni was hired just because he was able to learn the music and perform accordingly ..... note by note . Any good drummer can do that and that won't turn him into Mike Portnoy .

I love Mike's punk-influenced attitude to the music he loves making. Falling Into Infinity was certainly a low point for them, thanks to those producers. You still gotta love them.

@digitaldeathsquid3448

Sebax I meant his attitude to making music. Because Dream Theater's sound is unique and, well, progressive, the producers for Falling Into Infinity tried to take that Unique point from Dream Theater and churn out generic hits. This is something no punk would ever do. They eschew the music industry trying to screw them over. Thus, Mike's attitude is similar to punk musicians. I didn't say they PLAYED punk music.

I started to listen DT last year a few month before I saw them on the Along for the Ride tour in Europe. Since then I listen DT almost daily. People say DT is no more like it was with Portnoy. Even though I'm glad they continued to sing after Portnoy's departure.
@Enforcer0623

Kind of ironic how that would become a really popular album in the fanbase when the criticism died down. I wonder if albums like their Self Titled or The Astonishing will ever be spared criticism and just enjoyed for what they are.

It's crazy how big things that happen in life don't really happen all the time.But every now and then something huge happens whether it's with history ,science, political, spiritual and now with DT musically. Not taking away from the greats lineups like journey,YES,Genesis, on and on etc. dream theater is an inspiration for prog Rock/metal.love these guys thank you to the music gods above for them. may they continue their great contribution to the wield of music. I always loved DT's music but Labrie when really good for rock/melodic stuff never conviced me completely, never liked his high register. Nowadays in concerts he can't sing even acceptably anymore but the band still kicks ass. He was great in the 90s, did a respectable job until 2006, but his voice has been getting worst even when improved some by 2011-2013. They should get rid of him already and get a new singer, there are shitload of badass ones out there.
