I love Dream Theater, because there are so many different styles of music mixed in and there are so many different songs to listen to. You could listen to everyone of their songs and swear you just played through your entire iTunes library.
The feel and ambiance of this song reminds me of the U2 song "Bad." This is a pretty good song and if the label was trying to get DT to appeal to the masses, this is it right here.
Still the greatest B-side in the history of rock music, in my opinion! Deserved a full production for sure, and a spot on the album, preferably at track 3 (shift Peruvian Skies towards the end to bolster the weaker second half of the record).
"In contrast to Portnoy’s comments, John Petrucci has spoken fondly of the album, and in a 2014 interview stated, “Maybe I could set the records straight: I think that’s a really big misunderstanding. The label didn’t have an influence on the album. We wrote the kind of album we wanted to write.”
@@FixxxerZ7 if you listen to the FII Demos, it 100% was the album they wanted to write, even with a couple of digestible pop tunes, but the label certainly had an influence on the editing and production
Can't believe I just discovered this song in 2023. Their most Marillion sounding song, even more than "The Best of Times" (after the violin intro) or the keyboard solo from "Octavarium".
@GuillermoSmyser bullshit. they said no because mangini was already in and signed the contracts. its not that easy how portnoy sometimes tells his "gang". sometimes i think he think the fans are stupid. and he will not get back after this album. mayebe after 3 or 4 albums it will be "the great reunion". but then lets see how portnoy play the awesome mangini parts. that will be fun.
Wow! What a really great tune! Why wasn't this on the album? Heard the full demo version of FII and LOVE this track! Any live versions floating around?
because apparently Petrucci has an iron grip on the band and the producers are powerless to get them to put their great stuff in a song more than once or put their better tunes on the records
@psyoptica Me too! These demos are my favorite DT era by far. If only the label had just fucked off and, if Derek hadn't gotten kicked out. This beats anything Rudess has done with them so far.
@legatoshred You're probably right. And I figure it will be 3 or 4 albums. I love Mangini and think he is at least as good a fit in DT as Portnoy. Anything to get the progressive juices flowin'. And things were seeming to get a bit stale in my opinion. Haha, I bet Portnoy could eventually play the Mangini parts but it won't be easy.
@chucke1963 Portnoy tried to get back together them after awhile and the rest of the band said no. Cause they didn't want it to look like Portnoy could just do what ever he wanted. So it's not just Portnoy, but I guess it means they will get back together after this new album and tour.
Mangini had already quit his other job to join DT. So bringing Portnoy back at that point would have been unfair. Its just screwed up how big of a hurry they were to replace him.
Ahhh commercial stupid music industry man was trying to take all of Dt's Creativity and cutting out some of the best songs that could have been on Falling In To Infinity this one was one of them.
love hearing songs that didnt make the cut..they should do releases of the old shit, now they've been with Road Runner, they should redo When Dream And Day Unite with James Labrie on vox/////
