ET is so cute! I first learned about this species on Mike’s channel and my further searches led me here. I’m really enjoying your channel and nice to find another fellow Canadian with similar interests. I am in Sask. I have a Hermann’s tortoise who I just had a new enclosure built for. He’s going to be moving into the new enclosure in a few weeks time and I’m already looking at options to fill his old enclosure. Boy, would I love to have one of these black breasted leaf turtles. I have a lot more research to do first though.

I have a couple Mississippi map turtles that I got a little over a year ago. They were the first critter I ever got for my daughter, and were her introduction to reptiles. She adores them.

The beginning! 😅 He is so cute. And it is kind of funny how he snaps for food. I would love to have a tortoise or turtle that does not need too much/deep water like ET, but don't have any. Although I have originally voted for Little Foot, I see now that the ET fits perfectly.

Oh Dayyan, I didn't mention this before, but you'll probably go full shallow, wide paludarium. The tested water, clay balls, rocks, filter, screen box for the filter, pump, and gradient substrate. You already know that turtles may be hearty, but for you to be comfortable with their habitat, since you're also very much into providing clean habitats, I know you'll do this turtle right. Man, they have far more habitat needs than most people appreciate and I know you know that. You know more about this than I do, but I'll share an experience that has hung with me over the years. The last turtle I lived with had a different owner and it drove me nuts how much they neglected the habitat. We had those little trash flies/midges. It stunk. My roommate was struggling with mold issues because of the turtle doing what it's doing to the water bowl in your enclosure. The humidity from spillage was too much. It was a tank full of stinky muck every few days. They went through so much substrate and the ecology of the tank eventually contributed to the death of the turtle that was never mine. It was a box turtle named Yoda. When you do get the setup the way you want it, I will be really happy. I'm sorry you're going to get a lot of cringy advice from people. You have such a thick skin, it's no wonder you love reptiles so much. My name suggestion is actually Grover, the Sesame Street character. It's the eyes that make me think of that name. If I'm just choosing between the two, ET is better. Littlefoot was a totally different reptile, saurian, whatever. You could just call it Elliot, though. It was implied in the movie that ET also sort of stood for Elliot, the kid's name. It was a really bizarre connection they had. ET didn't differentiate themselves by name and considered Elliot as one of their own kind. Elliot just couldn't understand that, being a kid. So really, ET was the first of their kind with a name and wanted to be called Elliot. If I hadn't heard a pretty decent film thesis presentation on it in college, I wouldn't have known all that ridiculous trivia. Lol. Besides, if it turns out to be a female black-belly, which I doubt from the tail shots I've seen, name them Ellie.

Such an awesome turtle... I just purchased what's called a Katchy it gets rid of those annoying knats an fruit flies... Rus from Aquaramax Pet's did a video on it... You might want to look into it... I purchased mine from Amazon... Fairly priced also

Geoemyda spengleri are an amazing chelonia species, definitely a species I'd love to keep one day.

I currently own 5 turtles. I have an Eastern River Cooter(almost adult), 2 Red Eared Sliders(both juveniles), a Pink Belly Snapper(baby), and a Florida Snapping Turtle(baby). Don't worry, they're housed separately. In a few weeks I am going to pick up an adult Sulcata Tortoise(African Spurred Tortoise) from an animal rescue center. He will be number 6. Great vid by the way; keep up the good work.

I have quite a few turtles! :-). Rhinoclemmys pulcherima manni, Terrapene carolina carolina, Cuora amboinensis, and a few others. :-)

If you look only at his head without the neck, it resembles a falcon's head, with the down-turned beak and large eyes.

Right now I have a chill young female common snapping turtle. Also some three toed boxed turtles and ornate box turtles. Wish I could get my hands on an exotic turtle like yours! One day

Im not a expert on this specific species but geomyda spengleri tends to live in rice patties in Vietnam. So when you construct his adult enclosure I recommend you make a paludarium with slow moving water preferably deep enough so he can submerge And he would benefit from floating plants in there

idk if this would work, or even be safe for the turtle, but i know a way to manage soil gnats (that we use for plants) is to spray water with some soap in it on the dirt. Well, with the springtails you actually prob dont want to do that lol itd prob kill them. but still, and idea. if the flies get completely out of hand

Flies love honey. Bowl of water, a drop of dawn dish soap to break the water tension, then drizzle honey in the bowl. Flies dive right in and drown. That’s how I rid my Apt of them.

He is so cute, I'm thinking the food thing could be a color issue. The one he responded to second was lighter and maybe easier to differentiate from the cork bark, where the first offered was a bit darker and he may not see that as easily. I would love to get one of these guys but I'll have to wait for their prices to go down, as a new popular pet they are pretty high at the moment. I don't have any turtles currently though.

Mosquito Bits mixed into water and water your plant and soil with it. you can also get a product called Gnatol offline and its what i personally use its a larva specific Bactria. for the adult fungus gnats i have a plug in fly zapper and also yellow sticky pads around tanks all work really well together... dont forget to also treat all potted plants with the Gnatol or mosquito bits and also bleach all plug holes as well as they can also breed there X good luck its the invert and bio keepers silent war

A little late finding your channel (through Mike Tartula) but better late than never. I’ve kept many species of herps, including nearly every species of US turtle/tortoise before certain species were put onto CITES as “threatened” or “endangered.” One species I’ve never kept -or even seen in the wild is the bog or “Muhlenberg’s” turtle. They are Americas smallest turtle with adults reaching the same size as the black-breasted leaf turtle and are similarly semi-aquatic. Due to their small size they were the most popular turtle in the US pet trade until the mid-1900s when they became scarce due to over-collecting, habitat destruction and their relatively low reproductive rates. Conservation efforts on protected preserves in NY, NJ, PA and other N Eastern US states has brought them back from the brink of extinction. I currently own a pair of breeding Indian Star Tortoises, 2 breeding pair of Spotted Turtles, 1 juvenile Southern Painted Turtle, 1 sub-adult male “high yellow” Leopard Tortoise and 1 sub-adult male Radiated Tortoise. The Black-Breasted Leaf Turtles are definitely one of my “bucket list” species, I’d love to locate a breeding pair.
