Dreams do come true: Fluval FX6

In this video I show why I bought an FX6, how I setup the filtration, and my first impressions. I also explain some really important tips for how to arrange the media. If your canister is not arranged properly you can cause major reduction in filtering capacity.

I have owned one of these for about 4 weeks, it was an emergency after my ehiem just fell apart as I was trying to prime it. This is the best filter I have ever owned, it deals with my Pacu’s mess and my Midas and my 10 inch Pleco without a Twitter. Great product!
@jarpajon8

I see some people are saying fx6 is overated and overpriced. Let me tell you, I owned every filter including sumps and I can positively say fx6 is awesome. its the only canister where u can see the intake sucking up crap! The self priming alone makes it worth every penny! Make no mistake, it's the best canister filter.

Great channel! And you can actually rinse off the Blue pads made for the FX series. I used them inside of my Eheim Classic canister filters for a while before switching to Pinky FIlters. Also, personally I would have gone with 2 or 3 Eheim 2217's to run your big tank. I am a filter hoarder and have tried almost everything just within this past year of being in the hobby. I have had, Sun Suns, Fluval 306/406s, Aquaclear HOBs, Marineland, you name it. But Eheim is just superior in almost every category. The FX series is great, but if you ever see a Classic Eheim for a decent price don't pass up the chance to get one!
@AquaticLogic
@AquaticLogic 7 лет назад
Thanks for the comment Erik. If you were to compare and contrast an FX6 to some classic Eheims, how and why would they be superior? I do have a couple of Pro 3's but I have never owned any classics.
@EriksWorld14
@EriksWorld14 7 лет назад
They are designed with few moving parts which leads to a much less chance of failure. Even in the event something does occur, parts are fairly inexpensive and readily available. Also, they do not have any bypass, and are extremely difficult to clog up enough to reduce the flow. They are however, a bit difficult to prime but theres a few tricks to keeping it primed and ready to go after maintenance is done. The FX6's total media capacity is mainly focused on the mechanical filtration too, which I find a bit hindering. If you look at the total amount of surface area available for bacteria to colonize, a big portion of it is on the massive prefilter sponges. This can be a downfall if you clean those sponges in anything aside from tank water, as it risks destroying a lot of good bacteria. The Eheim Classic series is often criticized over their lack of flow compared to other Canister filters, but many of these other canisters only achieve a greater flow because of their bypass and inefficiency. There are a lot of other technical aspects, like cavitation, pressure, etc, that can be considered as well but I have said plenty already lol Also they are really quiet and have a small(ish) footprint.
@dead2rights44
@dead2rights44 5 лет назад
If you remove the rubber bands off the hose clips that secure it to the tank you don't need to route the frame. The rubber bands are only there for shipping to keep the clamps from breaking. Unless you have a rimless tank then it's for the suction cups.

Congratz Man! I currently own 3 Fx6 from Fluval. You are going to love them! But I think that the blue filtermedia you were talking about has to go. It will clog up pretty fast, and slowly getting less and less flow from the outputs. Just a tip. Awesome fish and great video. Keep It up!

Thanks Zack! I'm a huge proponent of using the cheap polyfil for fine mech, but I could not resist trying Fluvals solution. If it does fail, i'm going to make a huge deal out of it because its sad that they can engineer such a nice filter but some of the media does not perform as well.

You're right about the water flow in the canister but this is not an ideal design. The pump is located down on the bottom, that makes priming maybe easier in appearance but in fact the filter will have to reboot everyday to purge the air accumulating in the top to bottom flow. Fluval doesn't publish so much neither clearly on the water flow.. wonder why :-)

GFCI has a delay. There has to be a current change before it can react to it. Is it worth the risk? There are sound safe practices and then there is just being lazy.
@AquaticLogic
@AquaticLogic 7 лет назад
Yup they do have a delay. So now you must factor in the current and exposure time to understand the risk. If you install a Class A GFCI, which ranges from 4-6mA trip current and then measure the actual current the fish would be exposed to for that period of time what do you think the risk is? My guess is that it would be imperceptible to the fish. Lazy? The condition of my aquariums speak for themselves but thanks for the cheap mischaracterization.

I believe the bag your put the ring bio media in is for carbon or other media.. never heard of putting rings in bags but.. could be wrong..
@AquaticLogic
@AquaticLogic 7 лет назад
Thats a good question Larry. The pore size of the bag could limit or inhibit the bacteria's ability to get inside and colonize the media...
@2keeperv
@2keeperv 7 лет назад
The Bag could be good for stuffing with something like Seachem Purigen or what have you.. I would guess.. But I think they have their own little bags. So not really sure unless maybe carbon because it is very messy and the bags may have fine enough mesh to hold it.. I want to replace the bio max with bio home ultimate although it's expensive. There are alot of different types of pourus media that do the same thing that are far cheaper.

To clarify, its not aquarium "water" that speeds it up, its the bacterial biofilms that are deposited into some water when you squeeze out mature filter media. If you cannot get this from a friend/trusted source then you next best option is to but the bacteria in a bottle products from your local Aquarium store.

I think you're at a stocking and water volume level where a sump or wet/dry system would have been more affordable, especially if you're handy. If you run into future problems with water quality that is something you might want to consider before looking at installing another canister or HOB.
@AquaticLogic
@AquaticLogic 7 лет назад
How much $$ do you think it would cost to build a sump for this tank? I'm super handy, and have never tried one before!
@dinglehammer
@dinglehammer 7 лет назад
The cost is really up to you. $500 seems like a reasonable estimate to me if you used a prebuilt aquarium as your main housing and chose to get an overbuilt pump like an Iwaki. The advantage with the wet/dry system though is that you can pretty well utilize the entire volume of your sump for biological media compared to the volumes provided by your cans. You could also move your heater and plenty of other equipment out of the display area. So for about the same cost ($300 for FX6 and ~$180 for XP) you'd end up easily with ~4x the filtration media (1.5 gallons for FX6, 3 for XP) if you built it out of something small like a 20 gallon long. You could conceivably spend less than that as well using a plastic tub and a cheaper pump.

I have the FX6 2016..not worth the price..yes its quite good, but the flow is weak and its kinda loud..The tubes is very stiff and is hard to get it right..

Peter I have to say my experience with it has been the exact opposite! Its very quiet, I cant name any other canister that pumps anywhere close to that much water, and their corrugated hoses are really flexible... I not sure what else to say.

don't waste your money at pet smart, I order my stuff on Amazon and I've been happy with my 1000 gallons an hour canister filter, and I got it for about 40USD

The FX6 seems to me to be over priced. For that amount of money you can add a wet/dry that will blow it away. I use canister filters but only as a mechanical filter and for that money you could add 5 sunsun filters which I have had good luck with. I guess everyone is different. I have a formula that I have used for 23 years .... wet/dry+canister+UV+carbon+purigen. Everyone is different. I guess if you wanted one filter this could do the job just add UV....

Wet dry filters are not well known or used much in the hobby. They can be loud and annoying. An eheim canister is dead quiet, a fluval a bit louder but still not annoying and barely noticeable.

FX-6 is the single most overrated piece of aquarium equipment in the hobby today, imo.
