DREDD (2012) | First Time Watching | MOVIE REACTION | THE BEST DREDD!!! 

9 years later I’m still holding out hope for a sequel.

The thing to keep in mind is this isn't exactly an outlier in Dredd's experiences. This is just a Tuesday. If he hadn't had the newbie with him, he would've had things done faster (since she couldn't be taken hostage).

The reason the guy thought he could use her gun is because of her interrogation. In his head, she let him think he could use it without a problem. She literally planted a seed to save herself if he managed to get the drop on her.

It's not a "remake!" It's a unique movie based on the same character. Calling this a remake of Stallone's Judge Dredd would be like calling the 1989 "Batman" a remake of the 1966 "Batman."

One of those rare occasions when the remake is better than the original and my god this movie is so much better by far.

This is the real Dredd not the other one.

Dredd really isn't the main character in much of the comics. He's the setting and the background. He will never die, will rarely lose, but the main characters in the stories all can and often do die. Dredd is the mesh holding the world together but the stories, like 'America' for example, is a tragic love story. Complex, layered, thought provoking. Obviously Dredd gets his big outings as a hero, but my favourite stories are the ones where he takes a backseat.

Dredd has taken his helmet off in the comics occasionally - early on we see him at home, off work, a few times. The point is really that they never show his face, which mostly means the helmet, but sometimes he just stands with his back to the frame, or head in shadow, etc.

this movie shocked the hell out of me... like where the hell did this come from? one of those movies where i was expecting nothing and got the exact opposite. such a well done movie.

I watched this in the theater when it first came out, and it was in 3D, so the slo-mo effects were even more amazing. I loved this movie enough to buy it digitally. Great film!

There are varying opinions, but I'm of the school that thinks Dredd passed Anderson because he realised as a psychic her mind was her primary weapon, NOT her Lawgiver (pistol), and even though her gun was taken from her, she never lost her cool.

This movie probably stands out from the bunch in that the one thing that makes it great is that there is not one second wasted into explaining Dredds origin story. The only thing you have to know about him is that he is relentless and his justice is absolute. I loved this one. Stallone's is, to put it gently, a shit show.

This is one of my favorite movies and I'm still hoping we get a sequel. Karl Urban OWNED the role.

In the comic Dredd never takes his helmet off. A while ago they contemplated showing his face for like an anniversary of 2000 AD. When the time finally came, they plastered a large censored bar across his face. The artist felt that after so many years of not seeing his face, there was no way they could make him look the way people built him up in their heads, so he was doomed to fail and just didn't do it.

I was worried about how they would handle the iconic line "I am the law" because it had become a well known meme at some point. Was not disappointed 👌

I wish this film had a sequel, they brought in Anderson for this movie so they had her character set up for the future Dark Judges story line, we could of had a Judge Death film!

The Lawgiver MKII (pistol) the judges carry in the movie contains the following rounds, all in one magazine and voice-activated: 50 rounds of FMJ -- full metal jacket (standard round), 25 rounds of AP -- armor piercing, 25 rounds of IN -- incendiary, and 25 rounds of HE -- high explosive. god the slow-mo scenes in this film was BEAUTIFUL with euphoric music, mannn the slow-mo actually had a purpose rather than it being unnecessary. definitely a highly underrated movie. so glad you guys reacted to this movie!!

Love the "it's just another day on the job for a judge" aspect. All that bombast but it's a standard Tuesday in Mega City 1. Would like to see it continued by way of a HBO style mini series.

The hacker kid with eye implants also plays General Hux in Star Wars. Ma-ma is played by Lena Headey who's of course Cersei in Game of Thrones.

Actually my favorite Judge Dredd comic book is ''Judgement on Gotham'', which is a crossover of Batman and Judge Dredd, written by Alan Grant and John Wagner and artwork by Simon Bisley.

She relinquished her weapon but he passed her anyway! That alone is more character growth than the Stallone movie.

Went to watch it in the movies, didn't really know what to expect, and boy oh boy this is still one of my favorite movies of future dystopian theming. I love every minute of it, it never gets boring, and all actors involved are doing an AMAZING job. Sadly because of it's R rating the studios never thought it would be worth making a sequel because the market is just too limited. BUT perhaps that's a good thing ! I rather have this one fantastic Dredd with Karl Urban, then a botched sequel just to grab cash. Imagine they'd do it PG13....it would taint the first Dredd !

First time i see reactor praising the music in this one. It is one of the coolest things in this movie. Creates gritty, grim vibe and elevates actions scenes for me a little bit more. After watching this for the first time i went looking for its sound track right away :)

Remember reading this storyline in the 2000ad They like most comics have stories going for 4 /8 weeks ....you get so engrossed in Judge dredd stories artwork and the other great characters, which the film world need to see converted to big screen you couldn't wait for the next weekly issue....Anyone out there remember Mach Zero ...he was great character.

As others have mentioned, Dredd has taken his helmet off very occasionally, but usually his face is hidden in shadows or seen from behind. We have actually seen his face a few times without the helmet - but on those occasions he was either in disguise having used a face changing machine to temporarily infiltrate a gang as one of their members, or he'd suffered full body burns that had left his head virtually all scar tissue. Dredd not taking his helmet off is a conscious choice of the character. He doesn't want the citizens to think of him as a man, but instead as a symbol of the law itself, so he chooses never to remove his helmet in public. Other Judges are less strict about this. The Stallone movie did get some lore right. The gang Dredd encountered in the Cursed Earth were straight out of the comics, though there they aren't cannibals - or, at least, they aren't shown to be. Similarly, Dredd and Rico are both clones, but in the comic they were always aware of this - they are Joseph Dredd and Rico Dredd. But Rico went corrupt very soon after they graduated from the Academy of Law and Dredd was forced to arrest him. Rico served twenty years on a penal colony on Titan, one of the moons of Jupiter, and when his sentence finished he returned to confront Dredd. We did see Rico without his helmet, but this didn't reveal what Dredd looked like because all the convicts sent to Titan had to undergo cybernetic surgery to survive on the airless moon's surface, and so when Rico returned large chunks of his face was missing and replaced by mechanical implants. What the Stallone movie got more wrong than Dredd taking off the helmet was the suggestion of romance between him and Hershey. To prevent conflicts of interest Judges are not permitted to have romantic relationships. Some Judges do break this rule, but Dredd is a stickler for the rules. If comics Hershey had kissed Dredd the way movie Hershey did, he'd have likely arrested her; the best she might hope for is that given the stressful events they'd both just gone through he might be lenient, cite extenuating circumstances, and let her off with a warning and a black mark on her record.

"I am the law." Nuff said. And Karl Urban is a New Zealander.

This movie exemplifies the K.I.S.S. principle. We need to feel there is a purpose: Dredd is an incredible film that never stops giving you what you want: no extra dialog; incredible action; vicious gore, but not overdone; no shoe-horned romance subplot. It is obvious too that this isn't a special day for Dredd...it's a Wednesday. See you right back at work tomorrow.

I saw this in the theater and knew it was going to be one I scored high by the fact that the beginning has Dredd simply on pursuit of the van. It is only after they hit the innocent that the gloves come off and he escalates to 'take 'em down hard' mode. His final line in the film sums up that this is just another routine day for Dredd.

The Mrs.' reaction to this was 11/10. Spectacular.

If not already on your suggestion list, I highly recommend The Raid: Redemption (and it's sequel) which came out around near enough the same time and features a similar plot to retake a tower block. The fight choreography in both Raid films is absolutely amazing

Anderson is an important Judge, they need her if they ever do the Dark Judges story.

Urban did the trademark Dredd grimace SO well.

This is a great film. With the lack of a sequel I hope the upcoming TV series can keep doing the character & stories this well.

So, in the movie The Labyrinth, all the fantastical people and creatures Sarah meets can be traced back to items in her bedroom. However, she also has a Judge Dredd board game on her bookshelf, so there's a real missed opportunity there.

Can not wait to see both your thoughts on this movie, especially compared to the one previous. This is THE Dredd movie. Hands down a great one. This is the Dredd I used to get in those 2000AD anthologies. Yay! Only 7 more hours to go until I get to see the one I've been waiting for :)

Great fun - loved this reaction! I grew up on the comics and Dredd's lived through a few different styles and ages. My favourite stuff is around the early period in the 80s where things got a little goofy and playful, but still with a streak of dark humour and ridiculous kill counts. Dredd would face off against an insane Chief Judge, a hugely overweight terrorist group, murderous game-shows, a gun that makes you stupid, a T-Rex, illegal sugar-runners... it was awesome fun. There were some epic stories too, like The Apocalypse War. Well worth checking out the comic books, they're pretty tightly written and play with some fun concepts!

I love the incendiary round. I LOVE this movie and want 8 more!! Also, that kid hacker with the eyes is Gen. Hux from Star Wars.

One of my favourite parts of this movie is right at the end; when they get out and the cavalry is all there and asks Dredd what happened and he's just like "Drug bust" like it's any other thursday

I really liked the Sly version (having never read a Judge Dredd comic helped). But this one I loved. The gritty, ultra-violent aspect of this one is great (with shades of RoboCop).

This movie is a masterpiece! Sequels needed. Nothing else needs to be said.

Not only is this the superior version, Karl Urban is the perfect choice to play the titular character. The big guy playing the paramedic teamed up with Karl Urban in the 2005 adaptation of Doom. This was primarily filmed on location in South Africa. MaMa is played by Lena Headey from 300 and Game of Thrones

I have watched Dredd about a Billion times. It is one of my all time favorites. It was so much better than the origional IMHO. Fantastic movie!!!! Good Call Mrs Movies

I went into this film not expecting much, and only watching it for Karl Urban & Lena Headey, and was blown away by how good it was. It's criminal that it's never gotten a sequel.

Yeah I still want to see Karl Urban play Dredd again. My mind was blown when this didn't get any attention. It's such a good movie and the a very true to character rendition of the character. Karl is awesome as an action star anyway

Fun Fact: Gavin Free of the Slow-Mo Guys was the slow motion cinematographer of this film, as well as an episode of Top Gear, Hot Fuzz, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and Snow White and the Huntsman.

Also, did anyone else notice during aquaman's slow motion music video, he fucking littered? what an asshole lol I've heard of a Dredd tv series, and I'm hoping that's actually coming, because this Universe is pretty brutal and I'd like to explore more of it.

This is the first Dredd movie that doesn't have the title character take off his helmet in any part of the movie. There were talks of a Sequel and a TV series called DREDD: Mega City One, but all of these were shelved after the film bombed at the box office making, $45 million dollars against a $50 million dollar budget.

as a 30 year reader of Judge Dredd, I was so stoked for this film existing. More than happy with the adaption. One of my favourites. A lot of people bemoan that Mega City 1 doesn't look like it does in the comics, BUT mega city 1 is young, as is Dredd himself in this. Dredd is around 90 in the comics now. He aged as the comic did from the start in the mid 70's. He stays a youthful 60ish by working 22 hours a day on the streets and spending an hour in a rejuve tank, healing wounds and delaying ageing, then back on the streets for work. He is relentless, uncompromising and quite frankly, a real asshole. But a loveable one, cos he gets the job done, and usually in spectacular fashion. Anderson is the most powerful psychic, by far, and is a legend herself. She's taken on foes Dredd simply has no possible way to fight. We're talking supernatural entities. She has her own comic within the pages of 2000AD. Dredd always hates her cavalier attitude and Anderson is always telling him to lighten up. Whilst they respect each other immensely, they still have friction, not that Anderson gives a shit. One time, Dredd doesn't even trust this other judge (Grice) who preens his moustache, because that denotes that that he is more concerned with self image and not 100% concerned with the LAW. That's all that matters to him. Self image means nothing under the uniform. If you're a judge, you're all supposed to be the same. There was only one full frontal picture of Dredd in the comic as far as I know. And he had a giant CENSORED black bar over his head, completely covering his face. I really want a sequel but also.....I don't want a sequel ruining it, not that we're getting one. I prefer it to stand alone as a bonafide classic.

I used to read 2000AD when I was a little lad, and this film really captures a lot of the atmosphere of Judge Dredd! I mean, you can hit "pause" at any random point and what's on screen will be laid out like a cell from the comic strip. It's so true to the source material.

Stallone's Dredd was a pile of fertilizer and that is being insulting to the fertilizer. Urban's Dredd was a gem, maybe a bit rough around the edges due to the low budget it had, but it got the feeling of the graphic novels down perfectly.

"What is with his eyes?" Mama's tech guy is the same dude we saw getting his eyes gouged-out in her flashback. He has cybernetic eyes now and serves her because he KNOWS how bad things can go for anyone who doesn't.

A male lead who is strong and competent but who no one can accuse of "toxic masculintiy." A strong female sidekick who isn't just automatically good at everything she tries but actually has weaknesses that she works to overcome in order to succeed. (That's called a "character arc.") A strong and menacing yet in some ways sympathetic villain who also happens to be female. And who actually loses to her male opponent in the end. You don't get writing like this in any movie made since the middle of the last decade...

The comic is apeshit crazy with its ideas, there's dinosaurs, aliens, ghosts, other dimension demons, lovecratian monsters and the most insane shit u could possibly imagine; and it is badass to read still

My cousin had an old comic book where Judge Dredd was in a hospital bed all bandaged up and still wearing the helmet. Back in the 90s there was a major story arc in 2000AD called Necropolis, in which Judge Dredd is forced into retirement and opts for The Long Walk (where a judge gets on his bike and rides off into the desert to whatever fate awaits him) and as soon as he does, Judge Rico reappears and forms an alliance with the Dark Judges who turn Mega City One into a giant extermination camp. At the same time, they were running another serial called The Dead Man, about a family living in the Cursed Earth who find a badly burned man near death in the desert, and nurse him back to health. The man has amnesia, but eventually the two storylines converge, and we find out the Dead Man is, in fact, Judge Dredd. That was the first time we saw Dredd's face.

This film got hate at the time as it came out roughly same time as the awful atrocious remake of TOTAL RECALL with Colin Fkn Farrell But it’s now a cult classic Another decent remake is ROBOCOP I actually love it as also had Michael Keaton who is always ALWAYS great THE OTHER GUYS with Mark Wahlberg & Will Ferrell it’s so good

Karl Urban is just fantastic.

One of my favorite moments in the comics is a small side-bit showing that Dredd isn't an emotionless machine or 'literally by the law'. He drives past some Juvies that are about to light and smoke a cigarette in public (big pollution nono and thus a crime), Dredd halts and the Juvies are scared shitless and he explains the crime they were about to commit, but the fact they hadn't lit the lighter yet meant he'd let them go with just a warning. It's just a tiny small couple-of-panels in a larger story comic event and it really show that Dredd only punishes when the crime is done, not merely cuz the intent was there.

The reason the first movie was so campy and goofy is because Stallone felt it should be more of an action comedy, and demanded re-writes and re-shoots to that effect. He butted heads with the director, Danny Cannon so much that after the experience the director vowed never to work with a big name Hollywood star again. The lesson here is that if adaptations are made by people who don't understand or care about the source material, it usually ends badly. That and Stallone is a giant twat. Favorite round: Incendiary.

Let me start off by saying that the scene where we first see MAMA in the bath is one of the greatest 3D scenes ever put on film. On the big screen it is absolutely beautiful as well as mind blowing.

Judge Dress started in 1977 so there have been 100's of story's, each of which is a stand alone, Dredd has aged in real time throughout the storyline.

16:12 I mean, they did set it up with the "He's thinking of going for your gun," scene earlier. They establish that he doesn't know what a self-defeating move that would be, for whatever reason. I guess it's just not common knowledge. Not enough people have seen what happens when somebody actually manages to get their hands on a judge's gun and tries to use it.

The hot shot used at the beginning is a heat seeking bullet and if you aim it a person, it will exclusively target their heat source (Yes, I looked it up)

DREDD is superior to Stallone's version in every way EXCEPT the chin, Urban's great, but I'll give Stallone's chin the point for better sneer/grimace :)

Am i the only one who finds premieres very annoying? I'm ready to watch it now and i know that it's done. So why do i have to wait? I won't miss this because i like you guys and the movie. But it's just very disappointing that i can't watch it now and it still shows in my subscriptions feed... In my opinion it's one of many new bad "features" of youtube lately. One of each specialty round is a reference to Logan's Run, the original 1967 novel version. The Sandman's weapon was literally a sixgun, with one each of the following rounds: tangler (webbing), needler (tranq), ripper (armor piercing), vapor (gas), nitro (explosive), and homer (seeking bullet a la Luther's gun in 1984's Runaway)

Amazing, and a truibute to her performance, that neither of them realized that the female antagonist was Lena Headey, who famously played Cercie Lannister from 'Game of Thrones"

A standard habitation level is about 2,69m, so 200 story is about 538m. At free fall, neglecting friction, that's 10,4 seconds of falling with a terminal velocity of 102m/s. Knowing that skydivers have terminal velocities between 50m/s and 80m/s depending of the position, we have to assume that friction will make this fall last longer than these 10,4 seconds. So if you experience it 100 times slower, it lasts for you at least 17min 20s, probably more around 20mn. That's a lot.

What I loved about this movie is that it was *very* 80s and had the 2000s sensibilities. Totally outgunned, outnumbered... yet the 80s part is that Dredd never falters... the 2000s is that they use ingenuity to get through the day, and the movie actually *looks* good, One of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. I hold Dredd in the same regard as Predator and RoboCop. Awesome to watch, fun to watch, and also makes you use your imagination. All while allowing you to just sink a few beers as it also can be considered a brainless action-fest. I love this movie.

I think incendiary was my favorite specialty round because of the spread of damage that it did. Plus the overhead shot of the round crossing the complex was really cool. 🤠
