I think you're missing an old Scandinavian trick. Check out the base layers from Brynje. It's basically a technical string vest that traps warm air against the skin, creating fast-drying, lightweight insulation and protecting you from sweat and moisture in your layers. Used by Hillary on Everest, and popular with Arctic explorers and Special Forces. Interesting to see you are using the cotton Ventile shell. I love this in snow because it's quiet, wind-proof and breathable (though I don't like the price tag!). But I can't really agree that it works well in rain. It will keep you dry enough, but it gets sodden, heavy, prone to freezing solid, and takes forever to dry. I wouldn't use it if there was an serous risk of it getting wet.

You even use bigger sizes for your ski boots

Goose down is very good as long as it's dry. It's one of the best weight / warm ratio. If you don't go over water and you carry it in an hermetic bag for rain you won't risk much.

True. Your head can need layers as much as any other part of the body. I wear a thin fabric swimming cap under my main hat just as an extra layer when it's bitterly cold.

Also it significantly warms up inflated air, making possible hard work at any temperature.

I have heard about one north pole expedition, they used plastic suits to protect their cloth from sweat to maintain it dry and warm.

@Mike Smith Perhaps I was being too prescriptive. Inuit people do carry more body fat than most of us and of course with good reason, they've adapted.

This is not correct. Of course an overweight person will sweat more if he/she tries to keep pace with a very fit person, because the extra weight means extra work = more heat. But as Mike says, this is about managing your speed more than anything else. In arctic conditions you should work slower to avoid sweat. If you're overweight, just reduce your speed. Moving in snow burns a lot of calories, so no need to stress :)

But while I’m chuckling away watching your blood pressure go through the roof I will agree that “unfit” is more the problem and that causes sweat management issues. There’s also a tolerance issue as well. Anyway just popping down to the shops to get my life’s supplies.... It’s 8° here at present and very damp. I shall be layering appropriately for my 1 1/2 mile yomp. Then back to the delights of central heating. When the world ends I’m off to Nepal. They can live through anything there and need none of our modern kit. Unless you count the knock off gore tex sold in Namche Bazaar that’s carried over the Himalayas from China. Don’t put a call out for me unless I’m four hours overdue - I might have stopped off at Wetherspoons (none of that posh coffee shit for me) for a warm beer....

I've heard that too but have only tried it once. The boots were dry but my feet felt like they were swimming - not a good feeling.

you don't walk with so many layers. For high intensity stuff like hiking with heavy pack its 0 to 1 base layers plus pants and 1-2 base layers on body plus a soft shell. Even in 0 F you will get hot.

Joe Bob ..for some it may be excessive, especially for those who have a higher tolerance to colder elements. Unfortunately I’m not one of those individuals, so bring on the layers.
