Wise words of advice here. Felt hats (that hats you were wearing) are for months with an R in them (or the colder/rainer months). Straw hats are for months without an R (the hot months)

If you’re thinking more in terms of “normal,” I would still argue that bootcuts are the normal jeans to wear for western wear in Texas, or quite frankly even normal in general. Only the younger generation wears tapered pants.
A rancher, probably just a trucker that transports food, materials, etc. It doesn't have to need to be always just a horseman with hat and gun on his hip.
It's not hard to dress like a Texan. First thing, the boots. Pick a design and size that's comfortable to wear but not too tight on your feet. There should be a little bit of slippage in the heel. This is common with cowboy boots. Cowboy boots aren't shoes, they're boots. So it stands to reason that the boots aren't going to be the same size as your shoe. Next, a good pair of denim pants (jeans most preferably). They should be tight fitting around the hips and specially made for boot cut. Thirdly, is the belt. Most cowboys wear a good western belt that is thick leather and good-looking. Then, comes the buckle. What's a cowboy outfit without the fancy big buckle to add to the western look. Next, of course is the shirt. The shirt should be a button down shirt (preferably in the plaid type look). And if you're feeling the look, adding a western vest is a good addition to the look. Oh and if you want to look your Sunday finest, then a bolo tie could certainly spruce up the look a little. And finally is the hat. No self-respecting cowboy would dare be without his trusty' cowboy hat. Of course, one would need to choose a hat that's the correct size (not all cowboy hats will fit the same way). Once you have the size down, then comes the selection of the hat. There are two types of hats. The straw is generally worn during the spring and summer months (Easter to Labor Day) and the felt hat that is generally worn during the fall and winter months (Labor Day to Easter). Of course, a hat is subject to personal preference. Then comes the color and design (crease and brim) of the hat. Many western stores can shape hats according to the preference of the wearer. So it all depends on what design and crease you want to put into the hat to make it your own.
First get a American hat brand or stetson, then get rider heel cowboy boots,then get win a bareback riding buckle, then,wear wrangler bootcut or slim fit,then wear a denim or striped pearl snap,then wear a classic belt and get a cowboy blazer and your all set
