Drill Press Lathe - Making a Shaving Brush Handle

Get a lathe. My Dad use to visit his Uncle who owned an expensive lathe. Every time we would visit, Dad and his Uncle would go out to the work shop and you would never see them again until it was time for lunch or time to leave. My Dad had a love of wood among other things. When the Uncle died, my dad told the executor of the estate (his sister) that he would like to be notified when they had the estate sale because he would like to try to purchase the lathe and some of his tools. His sister (the executor) told Dad not to worry about it. Dad was puzzled and didn't understand her comment but left it at that. Dad later learned that his Uncle's will specified that my Dad was to receive the lathe and ALL of the shop equipment and tools. His Uncle left all this to someone that he knew would take good care of it and would put good use to it. I didn't really comprehend what all this meant and why my Dad felt so blessed, but I understood it better when my Dad hauled all this stuff home. First of all, they had to take a tractor with a loader up there in order to put all this heavy stuff on the cattle truck he took up there. When the cattle truck arrived home, it was stacked full. Dad's work shop was completely filled with all kinds of equipment, tools and work tables. Over the years he did many things including machining metal with the lathe. Ya... Dad inherited an expensive lathe. Dad made pens out of dear horns and he showed me how and I made several kinds of writing pens. Later on he purchased a smaller wood working lathe. He made bowls and wooden toys. Made some great things. I even went to a wood working class with my dad. I'm a girl, but I also have a love of wood. Buy a lathe. You will enjoy it.

I've been watching your video they're awesome. And I think I may have found a use for that metal grommet at the bottom of your brush. This is a secret from my art class if you want your brushes to last longer. Water slowly dissolves the glue holding the bristles secret is store the brush upside down. I don't have a lot of fancy tools I just taped a magnet to the bottom of my brush And I stick it upside down under my bathroom mirror you could attach a magnet to your brush Or a eyebolt and hang it on a hook.

I know some guys who splitted small piece of woods like you did at 1:47. They don't have the same number of fingers as me.

Since I'm only 17, i cant really afford a lathe, but I'll try to turn a handle on my drill press for a cast-aluminum-signet-stamp i made for a good friend too his birthday, thank you for the great video!

Be careful of using your drill press in this way too often. Your drill does not have any side thrust bearings. Without this you can induce damage to your drill press, ultimately causing premature failure of the tool, your drill may lose an accurate center, or burn out bearings. If you find yourself doing this often, do yourself a favor and get a proper lathe

Instead of putting an eyelet in the bottom you can glue small round magnets into the bottom of the brush. Then magnets under a bathroom mirror/ cabinet. Makes it easy to hang the brushes from without cluttering counterspace with brush stands. It works great! I have 6 hanging under mine for easy access. Big wetshaving fan here as well! :)

Before having a lathe. I make many things with hand drills. If you are handyman and have something creativity in your head and mind , you can do anything. Making by hands take a lot of time, but if you want to make something for yourself, then no need to buy lathe and accessories that cost several thousand dollars. I learnt working on lathe,when was a foreign student in Russia(electrical), we did 6 weeks lathe works for metals and know how lathe works . Then bought a lathe and parts assemble it and start making on wood without any formal practice and looking at youtube videos. Now I make different things and sell them in ebay, but I have only problem I don't have workshop, but do in my kitchen, so have to clean every time, when I make something. some of my stuffs I made Btw, most of my stuffs I make, is for fishing or anything etc. handcraftedbybazlur.com/

This can be done by hand. Just whittle it close to size and shape and sand it smooth.

I did the same with a noraml hand drill to make our now table legs worked out ok

I did it with Woodglut.

If you are really in to the best possible, shave Cup and Soap with a really good brush is the way to go. I used this method for decades...more than I want to admit. If you are really serious about finding the best brushes check out "shavemac". They are the best. Hand made in Germany with Badger hair...softest bristles. I have a small collection of them and will use nothing else. Two points...1) They are expensive...($50.00) and 2). I am a retired old coot and do not shave very often anymore. PS: A good lather is NOT made in the shaving cup...(You have seen too many Hollywood Movies). The lather should be made on your face....Oh, and I only use Willkson Sword double edge blades made in UK. Willkson no longer makes these blades.

Very nice... it got me thinking... My dad didn't have a lathe, but he was very creative. When I got his tools, I wondered what a steel angle iron was doing on his drill press. It was attached to the base (welded thread, washer, and nut) and stood straight up.. I bet it was for leaning the tools against.

I'm sorry if I'm repeating a question,but I am new to wood working what is the deal with the linseed oil and super glue? was it oil then glue as a finish?
