In this video I show the steps to making a shaving brush for wet shaving. I demonstrate turning and finishing the handle on a wood lathe.
I should have said rosewood not redwood.
There are a lot of ways to turn bush handles, here is one way that works well with the tools that I have.
My website is www.lewisrazors.com
My work is sold through www.straightraz...

lewisrazors awesome work. What does the superglue do? Harden the wood & seal out moisture....?

It seals the wood, I am using it like a varnish or shellac.

I hoard little chunks of wood. It was a turning blank from WoodCraft or Rockler that I picked up at the store. I do not remember exactly. I like to buy in person so I can see exactly what I am buying.

The super glue works pretty well. If you do some searching on the internet there is a lot of information on it. The pen turning guys have using super glue or CA down to a science.

With slightly different, asymmetrical curves it would escape the resemblance to the handles of the old wooden seals. I have bad memories you see.
@chemfun2

does the CA stand up better than multiple layers of poly? I just started playing, and since I had a clear semi-gloss poly I just started using that. It wouldn't be difficult to get some CA glue though. Thanks.
@chemfun2
@chemfun2 11 лет назад
THANKS. I'll continue to apply polyurethane. I made a jug and applied on the lathe this time. A few more coats, I can guess a main advantage to CA would be the quick try time.

Sounds like a pretty expensive finish, wouldn't oil or wax be better and easier to apply?
@lewisrazors
@lewisrazors 11 лет назад
The glue makes a durable finish. The glue stands up better to the soap and water that a shaving brush sees. A brush handle will have a lot of contact with hot soapy water. You could use any type of finish that want. I like oil and wax finishes, but in this case I went with the more durable finish.

Do you have a video showing how you glued all the hair in? Do you buy the hair in a bundle? How does that work?
@lewisrazors
@lewisrazors 8 лет назад
+abstractbybrian I do not have a video on gluing the knot in. Hair = knot, in brush lingo. I bought the knot premade from the Golden Nib. Gluing in is not a big deal, you just glue the knot in the hole. I usually use epoxy. I like jbweld brand epoxy, the dark gray color appeals to me, but any epoxy would do.

Hello, what are you using in the spindle side to secure and turn the wood? Is that a spur center???? Does not look as aggressive as one. Also, what size drill bit did you use to create the recess for the brush knot? Thank you and great tutorial!
@lewisrazors
@lewisrazors 8 лет назад
+Michael S It is an old dead center with a few notches filed in it. I like driving the wood with the dead center as opposed to a spur, when doing small stuff. The wood will spin when I dig the tool in as opposed to chipping out. I do not remember what size drill bit I used it was a while ago, maybe a 7/8s.

Great video and it inspired me to have a go. I used some acacia I had from an old chopping board and it worked lovely but I hit a wall with the CA coating. I ended up with ridges along the handle. I tried both a glove and an oiled paper towel. Do you normally get ridges but take them back with the 400 grit? Any tips greatly appreciated, thanks
@lewisrazors
@lewisrazors 8 лет назад
I do not have a problem with ridges, I am not sure what is going on. I would look on pen making sites and videos for more help. Pen makers have the CA finish down to a science. I wish I had some smart to say, but I do not.

For someone new to turning, how big of lathe do you need to turn a brush. Maybe the better question would be what RPM must the motor achieve to turn the piece properly?
@lewisrazors

You can make the handles on small lathes. I am not sure of the rpm on my lathe, it has a handle one side is fast the other is slow, but no rpm markings.

@jonjensen6745
@jonjensen6745 8 лет назад
+lewisrazors sorry I might not be using the right term. Is it called the drive center? I mean the threaded post with the sharp point that is holding the wood on the lathe as you turn? I've just never seen one like that.
@jonjensen6745
@jonjensen6745 8 лет назад
+Jon J. At 1:22. On the left.
@lewisrazors
@lewisrazors 8 лет назад
+Jon J. It is an old dead center, that I filed a couple notches in. A lot of the time I will drive with that dead center as opposed to a spur. When I catch the tool in the wood (which happens a bit, I am not the greatest on the lathe) it spins with no harm done.
