Drink n' Review: Dungeon World 

I was about to review this book, then I found this video and I was like, "Nothing more to say here. On to the next book." A killer review indeed.

Honestly, the DM advice is my favourite part of that book. If you're a brand new DM, you could do far worse than using this game as a learning tool and then taking those lessons to other games.

Ok. I'm back after getting the book from my local brick and mortar.

I have run this game several times as well as apocalypse world which is its inspiration. This system is great for really experienced players or newbies. The middle ground people or numbers crunchers seem to have trouble adjusting. The thing about the kraken is that in the "fiction" typically you can't just walk up and smack the kraken. It will involve using your head to even prove you can hurt it. Long story short, Great review and this system is awesome.

This is the "powered by the apocalypse" system. This is specifically their answer to dnd that's why it has the dnd vibe. They have many other games that are not at all dnd like.

The worst thing about the game is the layout. Huge blocks a text, few illustrations. My biggest gripe is the organization of the monster section. They aren’t alphabetical, the are by category, so good luck finding anything.

Too funny man. You have great reviews. Very intelligent and thought out, while managing to not bore me to death. You should really look in to contacting some of these companies for some loot to review and possibly fund some giveaways for your channel.

The fact that he wore a Destiny 1 T-shirt make this video worth watching.

Dungeon world was my first experience in a true RPG and now I use it as a way to bring friends into it... Its such a fun game that relies heavily on the DM and really allows newer players to learn the basics without getting into spellsaves and prodiciency and such and leaves stuff down to just straight rolls with your 9 basic stats. Armor comes down to just "reduce damage by X" If you are looking for a simple game that focuses on player engagement, creativity, and roleplay... Dungeon World is for you.

Great video! Just found your channel and am absolutely loving it. Just decided to quit reading my RPG books and start DMing. Decided to start with Dungeon World and Tiny Dungeon. Also, love your dice! They're my favorite Chessex set (if they are the ones that I'm thinking) and I have the 12mm d6s. Wish I had some of that mead! Nectar of the gods, indeed!

The King's Mead and Blatts Light have a lot in common.

Rolling 2d6 is more satisfying than rolling a d20! Agreed.

Dungeon World is far superior to Dungeon and Dragons. Unless you like tatical combat.

I'm really interested in this system, but i would love to see how the mechanics work with a group fighting a group in actual play. All the demos I've seen is just one hero against monster(s)

I love your channel. A quick note about the "no initiative" being chaos comment. It really isn't. In DnD you don't have initiative during roleplaying segments. Nobody takes specific initiative-driven turns talking to the blacksmith or the tavern keeper. It happens naturally, each person gets their turn just like a normal conversation. Its exactly the same thing but combat. I thought it wouldn't work either, but it totally does.

The editing was a little odd and cut off at weird times, but great video! I'm starting a DungeonWorld group soon, so this was super helpful. Thanks!

Kings are always portraited as fat because a lot were haha Interesting tid bit though, In the middle ages when they didn't have any real knowledge about nutrition they treated vegetables as peasant food so lords & kings would eat a lot meat, poultry, cheese etc but very little vegetables because of it, gout was a really common problem among richer people

So, I added a couple more systems to my collection.(thanks to your recommendations) DW and DCC. First, DCC is worth the price just for the nostalgia and KILLER artwork! DCC is a really fun book and perfect for when you're just wanting to dish out some pig-in-a-poke (it's on YOU) chart rolls! Now, DW...it's just AWESOME! I've been designing and revamping my own systems for decades. Fighting the age-old battle....character versatility vs simplicity. IMO, DW makes a pretty darn good stab at it! I just started a new group....hadn't played in a long time. Half of the group was completely new to PnP RPGs, so I decided to use that as an excuse to purchase most of the 5e books and give it a shot. I've haven't been satisfied with an RPG system in years, however, 5e is "available" and easy for everyone to obtain. The books are great, with a lot of positive points...I think they'll function as great reference books regardless of the system used. However, it takes a lot of focus and guidance to keep "macro-incremented" systems from going to the "repetitious bland zone".(it certainly can be done...it's just clunky and cumbersome). I know that you've incorporated lots of various elements into your own play, DW included. Have you attempted to use the "Three outcome" system with d20's? It would "appear" that much of DW (even the mechanics) could be converted to 5e/d20? The idea of rolling for larger-results/adversary has appealed to me for quite some time.

10:33 "They came up with amazing original mechanic" - No, they didn't. Dungeon World is a D&D-fied copy of Vincent Baker's Apocalypse World. He's the genius behind it all. Check out AW and his others games, e.g. Poison'd and Dogs in the Vineyard.

Great game. Great review. The only bad point of the game is the refusal of the creators to allow for a Print on Demand COLOR VERSION of the book. I asked twice over a year period and they just come up with lame excuses. Too bad, considering the color .pdf is awesome.

But the question then becomes, was the Triceratops wiped out as a species because of their lack of piety to the pagan insect gods or because they sided with the carnivores in the planetary war of the dinosaucers?? btw, I am not drunk, but I am a duck.

How's this for begging players or GMs? Was thinking about using this to break into RPGs and play with my friends, but I'm a little worried. It sounded like experience GMing was essential to running the game well.

In this great video you ask yourself why they spent half book with D&D stuff when they had such a great, original mechanic. Actually the mechanic is not original at all: it's taken from Apocalypse World. Indeed DW is a Powered-by-the-Apolcaypse game. Also, in the video it's clear that you missed a point: you NEVER roll before telling what your PG does: FICTION ALWAYS COMES FIRST!

Obviously it's a moot point six years later, but does Hankerin not realize that Dungeon World is just a conversion of D&D to the PBTA design framework? They didn't invent a cool mechanic and then ruin it rehashing D&D content. They took a cool mechanic from Apocalypse World and then applied that to D&D. It's a feature that they are similar, not a bug.

it doesn't do that annoying fake progression thing D&D does where your attacks go up +1 as the monsters' defenses do the same?

I spent all of this time trying to piece together a super simplified version of D&D only to discover that it already exists. That's good, but that's a week i'll never get back. XD

One pretty minor critique about the video, and it has nothing to do with anything said. Your cameraman should've lowered the fstop on said camera, cause in some instances the depth of field was distractingly narrow.

I agree that the art is cringe-worthy. If they improved the art, the book would be waaaay more attractive. This goes for a lot of OSR type books though. (exceptions are cover art of Swords and Wizardry etc.)

Hank, love the channel, but this wasn't a very good game review. You hit on some big points, both good and bad, but were kind of all over the board on explaining how DW works. For example, the GM does not roll any dice for his "moves", but rather sets up each phase of combat as a series of challenges; there are a multitude of different "moves" that can be made that can effect the outcome of a challenge; that stat bonuses, factor into your 2d6 roll, so it is not 100% based on the chance of the dice (you can get better as you level). It's cool though... I mostly agree with everything you did hit on. Maybe just less mead, and a more systematic approach next time.

This review is missing out on some of the most important parts of the PbtA system. Waste of time.
