Exactly! US captured James Bond

As far as I'm concerned, it really is Connery's last Bond film.

I’ve watched film hypotheses that say this fits the timeline of the Connery Bond films perfectly (when he was captured, when he was available, etc.)

As said, once you realize this is a James Bond Movie, from the POV of other characters , it is an even better movie.

Yup, that one went completely over-my-head unti right now! cool!

Plus the moment Goodspeed covers for Mason in front of his daughter, painting him as willingly cooperating as opposed to them showing up to arrest him is to me extremely important. With just a few facial movements Connery conveys how much that gesture means to Mason, he's just met his daughter for the first time and the moment he heard those sirens he was grimly resigned to Jade viewing him as just another criminal... But then Goodspeed makes him a hero, a man working to help the FBI save lives, a man Jade can be proud to have as a father. As far as I'm concerned, that moment is when Mason first starts to like Stanley and boy does that prove vital for the missions success.

I heard that in the reboot, he’s going to be gay.

I’m almost positive that his daughter was banging her “friend”. She was very protective of her when he called out her name.

"Hey man, you f*cked up your Ferrari." The look on Goodspeed's face is comedy gold. Cage nailed it.

I still remember watching that fucking car chase in the theater... 2nd row! I got so fucking dizzy after a couple of minutes of nonstop shaking chase cam *lol*

That’s actually one of my fav opening scenes in a movie. It slaps you right off the bat and sucks you in. Needless to say the movie holds your attention for the remainder.

That opening scene actually made me think he was supposed to be the hero we were going to root for in the movie!

@@Fortaker Good intentions but so desperate to get a result he deluded himself a bit. He’s a fairly sympathetic bad guy as they go. Also Ed Harris is amazing.

@@nature_laughslast6438 Ed Harris is The Man in any role he plays, and so is Connery. Damn, this movie and Red October are both perfect examples of how Connery's charisma and air of positive masculinity never diminished as he got older, he simply became cool in a different way compared to when he was younger.

I agree! The interaction between the seal commander and hummel truly captures how damaged Hummel has become yet he still cares about American servicemen

The fact that he considers backing down at the end is one of my favorite parts of his character. He truly believes in what he's doing, but he really doesn't want to hurt innocent civilians in the process.

Plus, he wanted to destroy San Francisco. We need him now more than ever.

I'd believe that. Connery was notoriously tough on directors who wasted time and Michael Bay, for all his faults, runs a very tight ship. I can imagine Connery respected this.

Granted, as a series of increasingly trash 'Bayformers' sequels have shown, it's possible for directors to have a little _too_ much creative control...

@@garykuovideos Yea I remember seen that movie on TV during the weekend as a teen. That was back when movies were written to be both entertaining and thought provoking, and the defining trait of the actors were talent, not skin color. Ahh, good times.

I just spent this weekend watching both Enemy at the Gates and The Rock. Ed Harris was a great villain in both movies.

The Abyss is an astoundingly good movie, another instance where CG was use sparingly and well. I watched it when I was young and the image of that guy slipping slowly into the darkness recognizing that he's about to die, has stuck with me ever since. The ending always felt a little weird compared to the rest of the movie, but it was still great.

@@Renkinjutsushi You know, I don’t think I’ve seen The Abyss all the way through. Out of James Cameron’s movies, this one never really popped up on TV.

@@Renkinjutsushi One of the things The Abyss does exceptionally well is that marine who can't handle the deep sea and slowly slips into madness. The way it's written and the way the actor plays it is fucking terrifying, and by the time they get to the submarine chase scene I was literally on the edge of my seat. Now that's a unique antagonist for a movie.

Check out A History of Violence by David Cronenberg starring Viggo Mortensen. Ed Harris only plays a smaller role in that excellent film but when he's on screen, he's mesmerising. The Abyss is pretty damn epic too.

Thank the Lord. Action movies are so idiotic today that every one of them has to have a 125 lb. "badass chick" who takes out 5 dudes by herself. It's getting SO FUCKING OLD!!!!

Females can be clever, and manipulative, and deadly in other ways than beating up dudes twice their size for fucks sake.

@@jamestkirkcameron9189 I agree. It's not like females can't be great in martial arts/fighting, but it's when they make the fights unrealistic just to make the female characters strong where the Immersion gets totally lost.

every line hits hard in this movie

This is the line for me. Such a good sequence.

Hummel was actually a good person deep down but knew he had to do some bad things to innocent people in order to hold the government who betrayed him and his men accountable. This was thoroughly established when he canceled the missile strike and told the men he recruited that his whole plan was a bluff. I also liked how Morse's character still stood by him and upheld the military code (so to speak) when the others mutinied because they knew they weren't going to collect the ransom. They were not one-dimensional, blatantly evil people like we see in so many other military movies. Mason similarly seemed to be a good guy caught in the middle of his government's selfish actions. The movie paints him as selfish in that he's only trying to help free the hostages and disarm the missiles because it's his way to freedom, which he then refuses to do when the special ops team is wiped out, but then decides to help Cage anyway even though he realizes the mission is by then almost impossible and the US government is not going to let him go anyway.

It was incredibly loud and absolutely awesome on the big screen!

13 hours: secret soldiers of benghazi was on par if not better. And I love The Rock.

Along with Armageddon - "He's got space dementia!". I still diagnose ppl with that 25 years later. And, I listen to the soundtrack.

I was a bit disappointed that The Drinker didn't mention Bay at all in this review. This is like the only movie he made that was actually well written and well put together as a movie, rather than an embarrassing mess like Bayformers. I'm assuming it was because he had minimal involvement in the story writing. Still, you can see the potential he had here, that he squandered later on. I think that deserves a worthy mention.

@@Rock-xn3sp I don't hate most of the Bayformer movies (I think the first one is pretty good), but much like Bay himself they feel like wasted potential. Especially since they do have a lot going for them: the voice acting, the effects, the soundtrack, the OST, even some well-done action scenes and jokes. I particularly love the forest fight from the second movie. I'm a big Transformers fan and it's a shame that a franchise I love so much is seen as a joke because of some lackluster films.

Sean Connery was playing James Bond. The Rock is Connery’s last Bond movie. The story exactly lines up with his Bond storyline.

They couldn’t call Connery’s character James Bond for obvious legal reasons but they could give the Mason character a backstory and timeline that meshes perfectly with Connery’s Bond character. Too perfect to be just a coincidence. There’s videos on RU-vid that explain this in detail.

I don't know about classic but it sure was fun without all that Message bullshit and diversity they shove down our throats now. Now adays it would be toned down with half the cast gay and trans with a weak villain with nowhere near the acting ability as Ed Harris.

Too many men on screen for today's activist filmmakers. If it were made today Connery would be played by that annoying chick from Thor Ragnarok and cage would be played by brie Larson

Having re-watched it recently, I also really enjoyed it (as I'd forgotten a lot of it over the years). But one thing I'll never forget - Almost the entire film was plot 'spoiled' away in the trailer, down to Spacey's switch to Jackson's side. I remember the director/producers being really pissed about that.

Now you dun hit it. The Negotiator is one of my all time favorite movies ever! The story was amazingly gripping and compelling, and the whole cast was perfection. It's a perfect film imo and deserves far more recognition.

Agreed, I too had the soundtrack on CD, its an epic score - just on the brink of Hans Zimmer becoming one of the great names in film scores.

I've always interpreted it like the marine intentionally pushes the bricks to provoke the seals to start the shootout.

It was on purpose. The more "villainous" marine says something like "let's waste these f#ckers!" before pushing the bricks and triggering the shootout, especially since they were in a superior position.

Cue "oooooh! Navy Seals!" from Clerks

Biehn is such an underrated actor. This, Terminator and (especially) Tombstone. Everyone praises Val Kilmer for his performance, and rightly so, but the level of intensity Biehn brings is phenomenal.

I've noticed that bits of Zimmer's The Rock score gets/got added to a lot of action movie trailers (but would not be part of the actual soundtrack to the advertised film).

Movie industry was going strong up until about 2014 and from about 2015 is when you start to see a big decline in the standards of movies. It is the year that Force awakens, Spotlight, Room, suffragette and the Danish Girl. It was the first signs of what we call woke Hollywood.

Agreed. "Villain's got a point" is a great trope for layered characters, especially when used well like here.

I especially love Commander Anderson's appeal to both him and his Marines, reminding them of their duty above all else, despite agreeing with his sentiment. Mason even gets a dig at him later in the movie, and eventually Hummel realizes what he's done. The only thing I really don't like are the Marines who are suddenly acting like cutthroat mercenaries. Like, were they really just there for a paycheck?

Watch The Tailor of Panama for the same type of role reprisal but of Pierce Brosnan's James Bond.

Watch The Jackal believing that the titular villain is Bruce Willis playing John McClane if he had gone off the deep end. It’s even better if you watch the alternate ending of Die Hard with a Vengeance because you really get the vibe that McClane became a stone cold killer in the end.
