Drinking Water From Thin Air?! How To Harvest Moisture With A Dehumidifier

Harvesting water from thin air? It's more feasible than you think. Machines that pull water from the air already exist: Dehumidifiers. In this video, I talk about how to create clean water from thin air, by using your dehumidifier to pull ambient moisture, condense it, and generate a bin full of (almost) purified drinkable water. You still have to make sure it's boiled or filtered (and test for heavy metals), but other than that you're good to go. How's that for a different way to get a drink?!

The differences is they have food grade coils in them. They are also off the charts expensive. I would like to find a video on how to make those coils food grade.

WARNING: You can't drink pure distilled water as stated in the video. Doing so can cause a drop in essential minerals levels in your body (such as calcium and magnesium) and may lead to severe malfunctions. Lets say you don't have issue with no water, but the water storage is getting low, would mixing distilled water with mineral water 'fix' that?

A power station (Jackery or other brand) with solar panels to charge it might power a dehumidifier. Collected water should be purified/filtered before drinking. Might work well in certain areas or situations. Not all areas or situations, but some.

I hope it can fill a tank when you have a camper for bathe purpose... Peltier module should be re-designed a lot bigger with little power consumption to accomplish such job... Just like a transformer to be re-design for ways to increase DC voltage instead of AC...

The moisture that collects on my peltiers evaporate too quickly. I plan on experimenting with a dehumidifier next. For those of you doing the same, consider purifying the water collected with a Berkey Light Gravity-Fed Water Filter or a Bluevua RO100ROPOT Reverse Osmosis System Countertop Water Filter.

Using stainless steel will protect you from mold and mildew growing in/on the water generator which is very important due to the fact that some molds and all mildew are harmful and even fatal.

Another Off the Grid solution but takes hours in complete exposure to the sun light eill provide residual water from a pit dug in the soil convext, with a cup centered in the middle, followed by placing a transparent sheet of saran wrap or painter’s drop sheet over the convection dug pit stretched tight with heavy stones to help platic ridgidness lay flat and lay a small pebble over the center of the saran wrap to caus vapor rising up to collect on the underside of the saran wrap to draw droplets that form to decend toward the center and will get heavy enough to collect droplets of water from built up condensation into that cup and by the end of the day have some water collected inside that cup.

you can do this with an air condition system. it will collect water from the moisture of the Air. yes , it has to be really super cold to collect water.

I'm guessing the peltiers will struggle to get cold enough to produce a lot of condensation when the ambient temperature is high. Meanwhile, a condenser will create a huge temperature delta quickly, and sustain it. Also was looking at using a Cybertruck as an overlanding vehicle one day! Nice to see someone else interested in the possibilities.

Exactly the video I was looking for. Have you tried to engineer the peltier water farm yet? I think the idea has potential along the lines of solar panels. It might be possible to generate some electricity, while collecting drinking water, harnessing excess campfire or desert heat, and focusing cool or freezing air to wherever it may be applied.

I also thought of using cybertruck honestly, aside from its ability to last without gas being produced and its minor ballistic protection it has hepa biohazard filters on it. Of course i plan on modifying the body by cutting off the shell behind the seat and replacing it with a camper shell that has solar power on it

How long are these smaller units like the one you use supposed to last? I bought a more rectangle shaped one that is slightly larger that had a 1 liter reservoir. I had used it for a whole year before it crapped out on me and decided not to work. It's this a normal amount of time for it to work? Plus, during this time, I was only able to fill up three 2 liter bottles. This was in Sacramento, California.

When I put that question into Google it emphatically says NO DONT DO IT. Because of heavy metals and molds. But I feel they're being a bit over protective maybe . Surely if its cleaned up with a filter even if the unit has these issues then it should be safe.

There is a commercial unit that has treated the intake filter and coils to stay fungus free and collects a few gallons a day

Coffee filters work great to get the large contaminants out then I'd use some water filtration tabs or the liquid types and or use non scented clorox bleach be careful on the clorox drop dosage and or boil the water for ten minutes.

Why just run multiple units when you can DIY something? you could gut the unit and use multiple peltiers on a custom heat-sink setup. better yet you could also use thermo electric generation or absorption refrigeration to condense and collect condensate? all in all there are a bunch of ways to do this that wouldnt require hauling all that volume/mass of COTS hardware for a grid down or over wilderness treking.

My science brain has a question: what of the air when you live in a cold desert? There is sagebrush all around where I live. Logically, how much you collect comes from what is available in the air. This video has a man surrounded by trees. The natural water cycle needs water in the air. If everyone started sucking water from the air, wouldn't it just add to the already dry problem? Parts of barren Africa for years suffered with this until they got wells, used water to grow crops. They now have created a better green ecosystem to support their crops with rain, from water that transferred to the atmosphere through evaporation and photosynthesis. Its still not perfect though. All I'm saying is that theoretically, you could get water; however, it seems that in the long run we would be robbing the system.

Or you could just distill it using the sun. Dig a hole, place a bucket in the middle, fill the outside with w/e water you want (sea, river, tap, urine.) place a tarp over the hole, and place a weight in the middle over the bucket. Make 10 of those and you have plenty of perfect water using the sun, bucket and tarp. yw
