The Maximillian Affair was created by Boston bartender Misty Kalkofen around 2008 at the Green Street Bar in the neighboring City of Cambridge. This bar was about four blocks from the house I grew up in and I’m tickled pink that a modern classic came from it. It’s now sadly percentile closed, most probably one of the many covid casualties.
The Death and Taxes is a Manhattan Riff Created by bartender Michael Madrusan while he was bartending at Milk & Honey. He subsequently brought the drink to the Bar Everleigh when he opened it in Melbourne around 2013 where it enjoyed much success.
Created by San Francisco Bartender Marcovaldo Dionysos for the bar Absinthe in 1998, this was an early hit at the very beginning of what would come to be known as the “cocktail renaissance”
Finally a bartender has made an Amaretto sour into a crave worthy drink. Before Morganthaler created this expression most people had a love hate relationship with The Amaretto sour.
On the one hand you want to love it, on the other it’s cloyingly sweet and off balance. Thankfully those days are over!
The Siesta was created by NYC bartender Katie Stipe for the Flatiron Lounge around 2006. It’s a very satisfying take on a Daiquiri with a little bitter bite for the finish. Reeeeal nice!
The wibble was created by British Bartender Dick Bradsell and along with Russian Spring Punch and The Bramble which completes his trio of Modern Classic cocktails. It’s an odd one, but so so good!

1oz (30ml) Mezcal
1oz (30ml) St-Germain
1/2oz (15ml) Punt e Mes
1/4oz (7.5ml) Lemon Juice
Lemon Twist
Ginger Rodgers
1 1/2oz (45ml) Gin
3/4oz (22ml) Lemon Juice
2/3oz (20ml) Ginger Syrup
8-10 mint leaves
Mint Sprig Garnish
Amaretto Sour
1 1/2oz (45ml) Amaretto
3/4oz (22ml) Booker’s Bourbon
1oz (30ml) Lemon Juice
1tsp Rich Simple Syrup 2:1
Egg White
Siesta
1 1/2oz (45ml) Tequila Blanco
3/4oz (22ml) Lime Juice
3/4oz (22ml) Simple Syrup
1/2oz (15ml) Grapefruit Juice
1/4oz (7.5ml) Campari
Lime Wheel Garnish

Well, since the Summer Solstice marks the first day of Summer and it occurs between June 20-22, he beat the summer by 5-6 days so technically these are great Spring cocktails.😁😁🤣🤣😎😎

Had to make the Morgenthaler Amaretto Sour again after watching this, and I totally agree, it is stupid how much better Morgenthalers recipe is. I always say I’m not a huge fan of the cocktail when I’m out with friends, but Thats because way too many bartenders make the amaretto Sour without the bourbon!

I love Katana Kitten's take on the Amaretto Sour - they use a shrub made from umeboshi (pickled salted plum) that gives it an added dimension of flavor. Definitely takes some additional work to put the shrub together but 100% worth it!

Love seeing some less used ingredients in these sours! Especially Punt e Mes, you don't often see sweet vermouth in anything but stirred drinks and that's a shame because it brings a lot to the table. Thanks for digging up some more great recipes!

I've made the Morganthaler Amaretto Sour and have to say it is one of my favorites of the sours! It's so balanced and tasty!

I make a lot of ice cream so I use the only the yolks. The whites I save in an ice cube tray and plop one in whenever I make a cocktail using egg whites. It helps chill the drink well too

I've never tried the Siesta, but I've found that using agave in any tequila cocktail is a huge improvement in flavor compared to simple syrup.

Oh I see. It's 1tsp of rich syrup. The description says 1oz. Still. I think I'll try to make this 1:1:1 Bourbon, Lemon, Amaretto, and work from there. Maybe it's just the brand I have, but my amaretto is VERY sweet. Sickeningly so.
