The Long Island: One of The Most popular cocktails in History!
Note on this video: I mention that Cointreau is made from a Neutral grain spirit macerated with oranges but that's not totally true, Cointreau is made from a neutral spirit made from Sugar Beets and I knew that, i think I made the flub because I'm usually talking about Whiskey LOL!
The Long Island Iced Tea is the Rodney Dangerfield of cocktails, it don't get no respect! But if you see it for what it really is, you'll see that it's simply a sour template where the main spirit is split into four with a little dry Cointreau to temper the sweet. Now given that we're in a time when cocktails are thought of in a more culinary way and there's a lot of innovation going on it's easy to see why this drink get's lost in the shuffle, it really isn't very balanced and it is a lot of sweet on sweet on sweet. That said, it is somewhat of a guilty pleasure, it is a household name that is called often, will continue to be called in bars today, Highball drinks are back in fashion and therefore worth our consideration. If you are working in a bar today (and really even if you're not) you may as well know how to make a Long Island Iced Tea, and if you're going to learn that, you may as well learn all the major variations too. There are easily another five variations on this drink, using the same template and changing the modifier and the lengthener.
The Long Island came into being the way a lot of cocktails do: A company wanted to sell a product so created a competition for bartenders to push the product. In this case it was Triple Sec and the guy who entered the competition was a bartender named Robert "Rosebud" Butt who worked at the Oak Beach Inn on Long Island, NY around 1972. There is a somewhat similar drink which claims to be the genesis of the Long Island created during Prohibition by a guy known as Old Man Bishop in a community called Long Island in Kingsport Tennessee. The drink is said to have been perfected by Ransom Bishop (Old Man Bishop's Son) and it consisted of various amounts of the major four liquors with the addition of Whiskey and Maple Syrup. I don't have the specs on this one, just the story which seems unlikely as it wouldn't have been created in the 1920's, lay dormant for 50 years then all of a sudden spike in popularity. But I guess it could have provided inspiration to Mr. Butt if he;'d known about it. All of this is just conjecture, there's really no way to know!

As a NYC bartender, I just want to say, every bar I've worked in has done a minimum of 1oz of each alcohol (meaning 5oz of alcohol when including triple Sec). Most bars use 1.5 oz of each liquor, and some use 2 oz of each liquor. So, please, do not underestimate how strong your long island iced tea is.

@@acidfruitloops lol that's not truly how bars work. Surely, you must know that. How many bars have you been to in ny that the bartender is drinking out of an open container (like a glass)? Because that's not allowed either, but I assure you no one reports it. No one is going to report having a bit more alcohol in their drink either. Just like no one is naive enough to believe bartenders don't over-pour.

Brings back memories. During college, I had a Long Island party where I asked the guests to bring the ingredients for this iconic drink and mixed it in a cooler. One bottle of rum, one bottle of vodka, one bottle of gin, etc etc etc...Went over like a treat and much cheaper than an evening at the local bar.

There's a reason tourist regions have legal limits as to how many long islands they can sell to any one customer. (I forget the name of the place) I went to a tourist trap area near Jacksonville and there was a local law only letting them sell 2 long islands to anyone, no matter their size.

I never even roll nor shake any of these just cause I never have time. I only do it if you ask. 😂 But all my regulars don’t care how good it tastes... I typically make the LIITs that I drink (on the rare occasions that I have them, as I'm almost always missing at least one of the key ingredients for some reason) with either a lemon-lime soda--perhaps changing the rum to a dark or aged version to get the color--or if I really want that classic look/taste, a caffeine-free cola. My choices are mostly due to a caffeine allergy that I developed before I could legally drink alcoholic beverages. That said, I love the AMF and the LBIT!

Hey Leandro, I think the rum is missing from the recipe on your website. Keep up the great work. Would like to stop by the French Dip when the time is right. Hope to meet you! You've taught me a lot.

I’ve always drank the Jersey Ice Tea...... in which I was told you replace the coke with Jagermeister :-) not sure if that’s a thing.... but I like it......... also when I was in Riga, Latvia I replaced the coke with Riga Black Balsam

Curious. How was it with the balsam? At least, not terrible, or you would've said it...

Vigant I’d been drinking from early in the morning.... and when we landed in Riga we found s bar still in the airport and was there drinking Jaeger bombs for about 2 hours!!! By the time I got to the Riga Ice tea I’d had a few. Riga Black Balsam on it’s own is awful.... but mixed with everything else was ok. With them, flaming sambucas..... champagne in the sky lounge..... I black out a few times....
