Yea they definitely weren't planning on doing 5 musicals so they probably wanted to include as much from the entire series as possible with out losing the essential plot of the lightning thief, like what you mentioned and how they had an entire song dedicated to telling Talia's origin and even just the dam jokes

I like how when they actually SEE Ares, they're all cool, but once he mentions Clarisse, they're like, "Yep, this guy is definitely trouble." Like father, like daughter, I guess..
I, personally love the Idea for this musical, but, I've got a few bones to pick with it. First up, Why would a blown up bus tear in half and why would Ares have a helmet for himself but not for the three passengers who could potentially die.
