This is PART 2 of a 2-Part series on this unit.
In Part 1, we look a look at this Classic unit hearing that it had power hooked up but no life! We were able to get the power issue fixed, and found the AM and FM Stereo worked pretty well. But alas - no 8 Track joy.
And that means no QUAD joy! Can we fix the 8 Track part of this radio and get back to the 70s?
This car radio/tape player is from the late 1970s. Let's see if we can get this classic playing again. Will it even work? If we can it will find a home in a 1981 Mustang.
See the checklist which appears when status changes, for tracking what is discovered that needs addressing in Red, followed by Green when resolved.
NOTE: Fixing things is a hobby for me; this is not instruction, it is for entertainment for people like me who enjoy watching projects unfold and the experiences gained. If you attempt to do some of the things in this video you are at your own risk. I am using special tech-bench safety and current limiting equipment not detailed here so don't take for granted you can just plug these old items in safely without them being checked and repaired correctly. Check out the link below to Mr Carlson's Lab video below.

Thanks to shango066 for championing the approach of "fix it first", before mass re-capping. See shango066 for many examples of that approach.

Great job with such a tightly packed radio! I have many quad 8 tracks that sound fantastic on my home quad system.

Wow it works as if it is new. You did an exemplary restore job within practical limits. Never had an 8 track player in any car that I had but they cost money I didn't have any extra for back in the day.

Thanks so much. We had a 8-track (stereo) car player that my Dad kept in the glove compartment of our 72 Chevy Impala. We had it hooked up to its own speakers; the dash AM could have the speaker on the dash by the windshield. When he got us that JCPenney unit shown earlier on this channel, note that it has 8-track RECORD capability; so we could make our own tapes from records. That was an unusual capability back in the early 70s, before cassettes/decks were generally good enough for music (I got my TEAC A-100 in 1977, and still have it). I never had a quad unit, but some older guys in the neighborhood did. I remember when you drove down the highway, you would always see 8-track tapes on the ground by the side of the road where someone had pulled it from a player that had just 'eaten' an expensive tape and the driver just hurled it out the window in frustration. Tape everywhere, blowing around in the wake of the cars driving by. A sight I guess we will never see again. I appreciate the comment and thanks again. [edit-spelling]

Well you brought it back alive. Nice work indeed. Those old stereo 8 tracks are bad enough, but you managed to do a quad. That is kind of special. :)

Haha, yep it lives! The quad was really cool to hear again. Think about the last time you heard a quad recording with some sound effects to emphasize it. It was really fun. Actually the fidelity of the 8-tracks were not as bad as I remembered it...or maybe my ears' high ends response have dropped to where 8-track sounds normal to me now. Now, there's a sobering thought. Thanks!

Does this unit have to have a speaker load applied to keep amplification board from burning up? Thanks.

Hi. I cannot say. When doing some research on this unit, I did see it "somewhere" that it was important that these audio output OP Amps not be run unloaded or they could fail, and since these ICs are extremely hard to find, and the unit did not belong to me, I thought it would be irresponsible of me to not take that precaution. I do know that in general, it is something I have heard about for decades regarding amps, and the Sony R2R, with vacuum tube output amps, that I just had on my channel had an internal 8 ohm load on each speaker connection unless the speaker was plugged in. Likely the answer in general is, it depends - for this unit, I played it safe.

Great video! I have 2 of these units that I need belts for. The only ones I can source are round, not square like the OEM. Do you have a source for the OEM square belt? Thank you!

Thanks. I haven't tried them for this, but a search "tape drive belts" turned up turntableneedles.com (and others). On their site they seem to indicate they can provide square cross section belts if you can give them the length, etc. They give info to help you figure that out. Good luck. Thanks for watching.
