Magpies - common saying, from a nursery rhyme, is "One for sorrow, two for joy". Hopefully the magpie's mate was nearby just out of sight! "One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl, Four for a boy, Five for silver, Six for gold, Seven for a secret never to be told". There are more verses. Magpies were often associated with ill-omen in olden times. Brits of my generation will remember the ITV children's news/info TV series "Magpie", with those words as its theme tune!

@@DaydreamersBarn , don't forget to get the electric sockets and plugs for your new home before you leave . Try to go north to do some tourist stuff 😂 but don't forget to take rain mac's and walking shoes etc especially the lake district , they are not one day trips though . The whole of the north is stunning, west or east coasts.

@@DaydreamersBarn Yes, enjoyed the video as always. And I confess I was surprised at what you opened up about, Jess. Helps me understand more why making these videos gives you (and us!) so much pleasure. On the Magpie theme, there are a number of videos of the TV show on RU-vid, including the theme song with the words. The song (I recall it was by the Spencer Davis Group?) changed the nursery rhyme words a bit for 8-10 "eight's a wish and nine's a kiss, ten is a bird you must not miss", compared with "eight for a wish, nine for a kiss, ten a surprise you should be careful not to miss", as I recall. There are other nursery rhyme wordings of the later lines after seven though, going up to 12 or 13 in some cases. No prizes for guessing that line 13 is not so pleasant!

Your videos are so relaxing and informative that very little explanation is needed. To me it is very much like being in the company of a best friend, where silence is understood and not at all uncomfortable. Another lovely video Jess (and Chris). Driving through the fens (you are lower than sea level) with wide blue skies. Gorgeous. Upwell Church is worth a visit as it has an Angel roof. This quaint little feature is found in a few medieval churches in East Anglia where wooden angels are carved in the roof. Back in the 1980s, just outside Upwell, there was a Christmas Village that was really cute. I remember visiting it on several occasions in the summer and enjoying their Victorian Christmas feel. Sadly it shut after several years. I am delighted you are in a better place mentally as you guys are a delightful addition to our sceptered isles.

Are you guys familiar with what "Pollarding" is? The tree on the left at 01:04 has recently been pollarded. This involves cutting off all the branches back to just the tree trunk, the top of which is also usually removed. The idea is that the tree will grow back stronger and healthier than before thus giving it a longer life. I had an Ash tree at the top of my property done about 12 years ago and now it looks superb. 🙂 An example of recently pollarded small trees can be seen on the left at 11:43. Hundreds of years ago pollarding usually involved taking just very small branches from trees as either firewood or for use in building things like walls and fences. You're welcome!😉
@DaydreamersBarn

I suffered a massive stroke 6 years ago which was caused by an accident on my way to work. The depression I felt from losing the use of my left hand and arm and having to learn to walk again was an awful experience as I used to play guitar in a rock band and loved driving in my spare time . While I was working I used to enjoy walking around the city of London during my lunch breaks which I cannot do any longer and fully understand what it's like feeling that being in bad place mentally but I'm hopeful I will get there through my physio rehab. Anyway I suggested a while ago that the Goodwood Festival of Speed Speed would be worth a visit but you couldn't make the Thursday date and asked for any other alternative events which another of your subscribers suggested the Goodwood Revival in September which is a good idea but if you fancy aircraft to cars then I would say 'Flying Days The Americans' airshow at Duxford which is not far from Cambridge on Friday 26 could be worth a visit. The museum there is excellent especially the USAF section where there is a B17, B29, P51 and my favourite the SR71 Blackbird plus the F15 Eagle . At the Beitish part you can see Concorde and some WW2 fighters such as ME109's which are being restored and Spitfires. For something more sedate and picturesque I recommend Finchingfield in north Essex which is said to b England's most photographed village. Hope I didn't go on and you find this useful. Paul

The large and ever hungry seagulls you talk about in your area are probably herring gulls. These are the ones that like to steal food or be fed by humans. Back when I was a kid (a long time ago) ;) they rarely travelled very far inland and we had to go near to the coast to see them. Now it's not unusual to see them anywhere in the UK. The largest ones we have here are the great black backed gulls , those are mostly found all down the west coast.

It's possible in England to find the history of a town or city by it's name. For instance, all places ending in Chester,Caster or Cester were Roman. Castra being Latin for Castle. All places ending in By were Viking,they are usually on the coast or a river. Places ending in Worth are Anglo Saxon. Incidently Welsh is Anglo Saxon for foreigner. A bit of an insult. Cymru is the Welsh name for Wales. Ian Dee.

It's great to see you guys out and about again enjoying the summer weather... Even if it's only to grab some paint brushes from B&Q... 😂 Just a quick question for you though guys... Do your family and life long friends back home in the U.S... Watch all of your videos of the picturesque places you've visited here in the U.K.?... Now obviously a video can't give them the whole picture here... There's going to be some countryside sights sounds and even smells that they can't always appreciate by watching your videos... So what are their most frequently asked questions when you catch up with them on the phone?... Buy the way guys... I've just seen my dream home in Norfolk being sold just recently... I would've needed to win the Lottery Jackpot to buy it though... As it was a whopping £1.2 Million... But it was an absolutely gorgeous property guys... But sadly for me... Someone else has now purchased this property... So the search starts once again... 😢😂 All the best guys. 👍

Wisbech is a small town and inland port, well worth a visit. My wife and I visited many times. It has a fine museum that contains the original manuscript of Charles Dickens "Great Expectations". Wisbech also features in a film. "Dean Spanley" which I thoroughly recommend. Thanks for a lovely drive out and more memories.

My wife always said, Morning Mr Magpie , how’s your wife and children and saluted with her left hand . She was very superstitious

That is similar to what we have been told. Interesting to hear about the left hand. Cheers, Chris

Do you have any American subscribers? If so, are they jealous of you because you're in England. Or are they saying bad things about Britain

We do have some American subscribers. However, they have not expressed either jealously or negatively about Britain. Cheers, Chris
