Today, Big Lonely Doug has become a symbol for bringing awareness to the remaining old growth trees in British Columbia, but it wasn't always meant to be that way.
Big Lonely Doug is a 230ft Douglas fir tree believed to be over 1000 years old. It sits 'alone' in Port Renfrew BC, in what was once a 12 hectare clear cut of trees known as cutblock number 7190. Back in 2011, a local logger by the name of Dennis Cronin was tasked with the job of surveying cutback 7190 by walking through the 12 hectares of forested land and marking each and every tree with a specific type of ribbon. Some ribbons symbolized where a road would be built and others marked trees that would be cut for selling purposes. But while making his way through the large giants, something caught Cronin's attention, a massive old-growth Douglas fir tree that stuck out way above the tops of all the surrounding trees. He didn’t know it then, but Cronin was standing under the second-largest Douglas fir in the country. Instead of placing one of the commonly used ribbons on this Douglas fir, Cronin reached into his pocket and grabbed a different ribbon, a green ribbon. These ribbons wrote "Leave Tree" and were placed on trees to... well... be left alone.
Within a year, the entirety of cutblock 7190 would be gone but Big Lonely Doug would remain standing. With nearly 99% of BC's old growth trees having already been logged, today Big Lonely Doug remains as one of the final standing old growth Douglas firs. Shortly after retiring from the logging industry, Cronin would pass away from cancer in 2016. Although his career was dedicated to levelling forests, he didn't know it at the time but he created a symbol for old growth forests that is doing more to raise awareness than any protest, march, or barricade can ever do.

Great drone footage of the tree🌲I still haven't gone to see it. I've driven by the sign many times that points to the road to take to see it😁 Looks like a good day out on the logging roads😊

My uncle, Dennis Cronin found this tree, and he was the sweetest guy I ever had the chance to look up to, but unfortunately passed from Cancer. Rest in peace❤

I used to wonder if these kind of trees were photoshopped and if they were really that big and then we went to Australia in the beginning of 2020 before the world shut down.... Anyways I got some pictures with some huge huge huge trees. Not as tall as Douglas firs of course but the diameters were way bigger my mind was blown.

Yeah it’s a lot more fairly well known now. Basically take Gordon River Rd then a right on Edinburgh Main across the bridge. Follow that to Doug! 4x4 definitely needed for the final stretch of road btw.
