Beaters are quite often the unsung hero’s of the shooting world. Here is a “behind the scenes” view of working a dog in the beating line of a local shoot along with a description of how a drive works in terms of strategy. If you have never been beating before hopefully this will give you some idea of what goes on....

Great video Nick, certainly brought back some great memories. I use to run two Springers, have a radio and flag, and keep an eye on the line. Thought it was only women who could multi task.

This is the video that I have been looking for. Where all those birds are coming from. Love the habitat you have created for the birds.

Firstly can I say what good dog work in there, right on the whistle and verbal commands, secondly, this is exactly why I think ALL guns should spend a few days with the beating team, to see just how much work they do and how conscientious they are at their job. Brilliant!

Hi Nick, yet another great video love watching your videos and aspire to be able to work mine like yours one day soon. I was wondering how you steady/introduce to live game. I am keen to beat with mine and eventually I would like to try rough shooting so any advice or help would be appreciated. Many thanks Alastair

Now that was a pretty good insight into the beater's end of things. Here in USA (Pennsylvania) we did a lot of flushing surveys to determine how the wild pheasants were doing, that we transplanted from the Dakotas. There was no hunting in these areas for at least 5 years, and only recently we have had a few youth hunts just for the young hunters. The flushing surveys were done the same way you folks were pushing birds for the driven bird shoots. We had lots of help with dogs and pushers, plus blockers for the running birds at the end of fields. Lots of extra dog working experience after the seasons ended. A lot of miles walked by the time it was over. All those birds really had Ted wound up. Take care Nick .... Happy New Years to you and yours, and the four legged friends of course.
